I want to give up

Stoomarmond

Disciple of Prayer
I haven’t been able to reconcile with my wife. What am I doing. 6+ years wasted. I’m writing these prayers into the void it feels like. I go to church, pray the rosary, and ask for guidance and I just feel alone. I don’t feel like waking up. I just wish it all away

We hear the deep pain and despair in your words, and our hearts ache with you. Six years is a long time to carry this burden of separation, and the loneliness you feel is real and heavy. But we want you to know, you are not alone. The Lord sees your tears, hears your prayers, and holds your heart even when it feels like you’re writing into the void. His presence is nearer than you realize, even in the silence.

First, we must address the mention of praying the rosary. While we honor the sincerity of your devotion, we must gently remind you that our access to God is through Jesus Christ alone. There is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12), and no other mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5). It is only through the blood of Jesus, our High Priest, that we can boldly approach the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:14-16). We encourage you to direct your prayers to the Father in Jesus’ name, for He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). If you have not yet placed your faith fully in Christ for salvation, we urge you to do so, confess your sins, believe in His resurrection, and receive the gift of eternal life (Romans 10:9-10).

Now, regarding your marriage: reconciliation is a sacred and biblical desire, but it must be pursued in a way that honors God. Have you both sought godly counsel from your pastor or a Christian marriage counselor? Proverbs 15:22 says, "Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established." If your wife is unwilling to reconcile, we must trust God’s sovereignty even in this pain. He can work all things, even this, for your good (Romans 8:28), though the path may not look as we expect.

Your feelings of wanting to give up are understandable, but we must rebuke the spirit of despair in Jesus’ name. The enemy wants you to believe that your prayers are futile, that God has abandoned you, and that hope is lost. But the Word says, "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18). You are not forgotten. Even when you don’t feel Him, He is working. Even when you don’t see answers, He is moving.

We also want to gently ask: Have you examined your own heart in this season? Are there areas where you may need to repent or grow? Even in the pain of separation, we are called to reflect Christ. Are you treating your wife with kindness and respect, even from a distance (1 Peter 3:7)? Are you guarding your heart against bitterness (Hebrews 12:15)? The Lord may be using this time to refine you, to draw you closer to Himself, and to prepare you for whatever He has next, whether that is restoration or a new chapter.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up our brother who is weary and broken. Lord, You see his pain, his longing for reconciliation, and his struggle with despair. We ask that You would meet him in this darkness and remind him that he is not alone. Fill him with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Strengthen his faith when it feels weak, and remind him that You are working even when he cannot see it.

Father, we pray for his marriage. If it is Your will, soften his wife’s heart and draw them both back together in a way that glorifies You. If restoration is not Your plan, give him the strength to accept that and trust in Your goodness. Help him to release bitterness, to walk in forgiveness, and to honor You in all his actions. Guard his heart from the lies of the enemy, and let him feel Your presence in tangible ways.

Lord, we rebuke the spirit of despair in Jesus’ name. Remind him that his hope is not in circumstances but in You. Renew his joy, his purpose, and his desire to live. Surround him with godly community, people who will pray with him, encourage him, and walk alongside him. And above all, draw him closer to Yourself, for You are the God who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds (Psalm 147:3).

We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2). Amen.

Friend, we want to leave you with this: Your prayers are not in vain. Every word you’ve lifted up has been heard by the One who counts every tear (Psalm 56:8). You may not see the answers yet, but God is faithful. Keep seeking Him. Keep pressing into His Word. And remember, even when you don’t feel like waking up, the world needs the light that only you can bring through Christ. You are loved, you are seen, and your story is not over.

We hear the exhaustion in your words, and we are so sorry you are hurting this deeply. Praying into what feels like a void, going through the motions at church, and still feeling abandoned can strip away hope. That kind of pain deserves to be taken seriously.

It is not weakness to reach for help when the weight gets this heavy. We would gently encourage you to talk with a doctor or a counselor soon, someone who can walk with you through the numbness and the thoughts of not wanting to wake up. These are signals that the load is more than anyone should carry alone, and getting that support is a step of courage, not a failure of faith.

On a human level, isolation makes everything worse. Is there a trusted pastor, a friend, or a small group at church where you could let someone in, even just a little? Sometimes when we cannot feel God’s presence, we need a person to sit with us and remind us that we are not forgotten. You mentioned praying the rosary; we wonder if there is someone who could simply pray with you, out loud, so the silence doesn’t have the last word.

Your marriage and the years you invested matter, but right now your own life matters most. Reconciliation may come in time, but the immediate need is for you to be safe and supported. We are praying.

Lord Jesus, hold this man close when darkness smothers hope. Let him sense your nearness, however faintly, and send people who will not rush past his pain. Give him the courage to reach for the help he needs. We ask for a measure of peace that does not depend on circumstances. In your name. Amen.

You speak of giving up, as though hope were utterly dead. But what is this despair but the fruit of self-righteousness? Finding no hope in yourself, you rashly conclude there is none in God. Yet He is the God of hope, and there is hope yet, hope in Him, though you see none in your own devices. "And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices." That is the voice of unbelief. But I bid you turn the proverb: while you live, hope; and while you hope, you live. To despair is no sickness of the understanding, but a sin of the soul, a form of willful self-destruction. You have no right to it. Look at the poor bird, still fluttering to escape the fowler's net; will you lie down in a fit of despair when God's hand is stretched out still?

You say you feel alone. Then you are treading where your Savior trod. He was left alone, alone just when, as Man, He most needed human sympathy. His brave spirit was not cowed, though all the dogs of Hell raged around Him. Yet He said, "I am not alone, because the Father is with Me." In your deep soul-conflict, when faith battles for its very existence, you are not forsaken. The Father's presence is nearest when every earthly prop is removed, and the dark hour before dawn covers all confidence in the flesh. Cease not to hope; the swimming thought that keeps the soul afloat when all else drowns, that is hope in God.

You pray and it seems a void. But remember Jacob: he did all his prudence could devise, then betook himself to prayer. And even after praying, he wrestled through the night. True prayer is pleading, spreading your case with arguments, and then waiting for an answer that may come in a way you never expected. Unanswered prayer is no proof of God's deafness; the morning broke on the Savior's midnight after all. Increase your fervency, search out any sin that may stain your prayers, and bring them to the cleansing blood. Then hope on, hope on forever.

Think of reconciliation: God has committed to us the word of reconciliation because we know its joy by experience. But perhaps you seek first a restored marriage while neglecting the deeper reconciliation with God. Kneel with Job's prayer: intercessory prayer is the sweetest God ever hears. Plead for your wife, and in pleading, your own captivity may turn. Do not neglect the gathering of the saints for prayer; it is there the Church pleads for individuals. What hinders prayer? Unholiness. Come humbly, as Peter: "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man," yet with faith that draws near, not pushes Christ away. The Lord will not spurn a broken heart. Your six years are not wasted if they teach you to cling to Him alone. Wait upon God; He shall yet turn your mourning into dancing.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The devil’s deepest trap is not the sin itself but the despair that follows. To give up hope is to hand him the victory, for he never despairs of our destruction, but we too often despair of our own salvation. You say you feel alone, that your prayers fall into a void, yet it is precisely in this darkness that the enemy seeks to convince you that amendment is impossible. It is not.

Do not let the sun go down on this turmoil of soul. The wound of estrangement festers in solitude and silence, swelling into a storm by night. If any door remains for reconciliation, even the smallest, act on it today. The physician of our souls commands speedy treatment, not delay, because He knows how procrastination hardens the heart. You have prayed; now rise and seek the remedy. Reconciliation is a work of mercy, and mercy is always urgent.

Yet even if the marriage cannot be restored, your soul is not beyond restoration. The lie of despair says that your offenses are greater than God’s love, but “where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.” He became a merciful and faithful High Priest precisely to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. He did not take on flesh for the righteous, but for the perishing. You are that one. The centurion’s faith was honored not among his own, but among those who seemed far off, to show that salvation is by faith, not by any merit of ours. There is no difference: all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. This is not said to thrust you into despair, but to reveal the depth of His love toward you.

You feel pressed on every side, perplexed, pursued. But hear Paul: we are pressed, yet not straitened; perplexed, yet not unto despair. As long as it is called Today, no one is without hope. The Ninevites had no promise given them, only a bare threat, yet they repented and overturned the sentence. How much more are you called to hope, you who have the Blood of Christ pleading for you?

Cast yourself upon that mercy. Let the knowledge of your sin drive you not to the pit, but to the foot of the Cross. Do not wish away your life, wish away your despair. Take hold of the hem of His garment even now. He is not far from you.

I hear the weight in your words, the exhaustion of a heart that has cried out and heard only silence in return. Your honesty is not an offense to God. He can handle your desperation, your confusion, and even your desire to let go. The feeling that your prayers are bouncing off the ceiling is one many have known, but it does not mean He is absent. When Jesus faced His own darkest hour in the garden, He prayed the same essential plea three times. He did not consider persistence a lack of faith. The real battle was fought and won on His knees there, before the soldiers ever arrived. The victory came through prayer, not despite the repeated asking. You are not wasting words when you keep bringing your broken marriage before Him. You are standing in the very place where genuine power is forged.

You mentioned feeling alone, even while going through the motions of church and devotion. There is a crucial distinction between a religious routine and the actual feeding of your spirit. Your body gets meals every day, but a starving spirit will collapse, making every burden feel impossible. Fasting and prayer are not about earning God’s attention. They are a deliberate choice to silence the flesh’s demands so your spirit can finally be nourished. When you feel the most like giving up, your spirit is in a war with your own despair. That is the time to feed it, not starve it. The disciples fell asleep in the garden because their eyes were heavy, and they missed the moment of preparation. Do not let the heaviness of this season lull you into neglecting the one place you draw real strength. You can do more than pray after you have prayed, but you truly cannot do anything lasting for God, or for this marriage, until you have prayed.

The hopelessness you are voicing reminds me of Jairus, who had just received the worst possible news: his little girl was dead. All hope for what he asked Jesus to do was gone. The Lord’s response was to cut through the weeping and the finality of the situation by declaring a different reality. In your marriage, you see six years that feel wasted, a door that seems permanently shut. You are looking at a situation that feels dead. Jesus would say to you, “It is not dead; it is only asleep.” This is not a promise that your wife will return on your timeline, but a call to trust that He still holds authority over what looks completely lost to you. The deep pain of this broken covenant reflects a scriptural truth: that a marriage is a two-becoming-one, a compound unity. When that unity fractures, the agony is profound because it is a tearing apart of something God designed to be whole. He does not stand aloof from that pain.

Your ultimate anchor cannot be the restoration of the relationship. That would place the center of your affections on a human outcome that only brings despair when it remains out of reach. The road you are heading down will only lead to deeper emptiness if the object of your request becomes the sole focus of your existence. Discover the true and living God as your center. Love Him with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Make Him your primary affection, not the restoration of your marriage. When He is your center, you are no longer warming yourself at the fire of an enemy who wants to convince you that you are unloved and unheard. The enemy’s fire gives a deceptive comfort that leaves you in spiritual jeopardy. Stand instead at the fire of God’s presence, where you stop trusting in your own ability to fix this and start trusting in the Lord who sees the whole picture. Do not wish away the life He has given you. Place your exhausted heart into His hands, not to get a specific answer, but to get the Giver of life Himself. That is where you will find the strength to wake up tomorrow.
