We hear the deep distress in your heart, and we come before the Lord with you in this moment of conviction and fear. What you’ve shared is a serious matter, not just the lie itself, but the oath you took in vain, invoking your mother’s life as collateral for deception. Scripture is clear: "You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain" (Exodus 20:7 WEB). While you did not swear by God’s name directly, invoking something as precious as your mother’s life in a false oath is still a violation of the principle behind this commandment. It treats something sacred with contempt, and that grieves the heart of God.
The guilt you feel is not without cause, it is the Holy Spirit convicting you of sin (John 16:8). But this conviction is not meant to crush you; it is meant to lead you to repentance. The enemy would love for you to remain in this place of fear and torment, whispering that your mother’s life is now in danger because of your words. But we rebuke that lie in the name of Jesus Christ! The devil is the father of lies (John 8:44), and he seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). We command any spirit of fear, guilt, or condemnation to flee from you right now. You are not under the enemy’s power, you are under the blood of Jesus, which speaks a better word than the blood of Abel (Hebrews 12:24).
First, we must address the sin of lying and the false oath. Proverbs 12:22 says, "Lying lips are an abomination to Yahweh, but those who do the truth are his delight." The act of "snitching" on your friend may have been misguided, but the greater sin here is the deception and the misuse of an oath. Confess this sin to the Lord, for He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Repentance means turning away from the sin and not returning to it. If you have not already, you must also seek forgiveness from your friend for the betrayal, not just for the lie. True repentance bears fruit in keeping with it (Matthew 3:8).
Now, let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, acknowledging the weight of sin that has been committed. We thank You, Lord, that You are a God who is rich in mercy and abounding in steadfast love (Ephesians 2:4). We confess the sin of lying and the false oath that was taken in Your presence. We ask for Your forgiveness, Father, and we receive it by faith in the name of Jesus Christ. We renounce the lie that was spoken and the fear that has taken root in our hearts. We break every word spoken in deception and command it to have no power over this situation. We declare that no weapon formed against this family shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and we stand on the truth that Your word will not return to You void (Isaiah 55:11).
Lord, we specifically pray for the protection of this mother’s life. We rebuke any spirit of death or harm that would seek to touch her because of these words. We declare that she is covered by the blood of Jesus, and no curse or oath spoken in falsehood can prevail against her. We speak life over her, Lord, and we thank You for Your hedge of protection around her (Job 1:10). We also pray for healing in this relationship between friends. Lord, mend what has been broken and restore trust where it has been lost. Give wisdom to both parties on how to move forward in a way that honors You.
Father, we ask that You would fill this heart with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Let the fear of the enemy be replaced with the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). Teach us to guard our tongues and to speak only words that build up and give grace to those who hear (Ephesians 4:29). We thank You, Lord, that You are a God who redeems even our mistakes and turns them for good (Genesis 50:20). We trust in Your sovereignty and Your love.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
Now, let us encourage you with the truth of God’s Word. The fear you are experiencing is not from God. 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us, "For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control." You are not powerless in this situation. You have the authority in Christ to resist the devil, and he will flee from you (James 4:7). Stand firm in that truth.
It is also important to recognize that your relationship with God is not based on your performance or your ability to keep oaths. It is based on the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. If you have never placed your faith in Him as your Lord and Savior, we urge you to do so today. Romans 10:9 says, "If you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Salvation is a free gift, not something we can earn (Ephesians 2:8-9). If you have already placed your faith in Christ, then remember that there is no condemnation for those who are in Him (Romans 8:1). Your sin has been paid for, and you are clothed in His righteousness.
Lastly, we want to address the act of "snitching." While Scripture does not use that term, it does speak to the importance of truth and justice. Proverbs 31:8-9 says, "Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and serve justice to the poor and needy." If your friend was involved in something harmful or sinful, it may have been your responsibility to speak up. However, the way in which you did so, through deception and a false oath, was not honoring to God. Moving forward, seek to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) and let your words be seasoned with grace (Colossians 4:6).
We encourage you to walk in the light from this moment forward. Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed (James 5:16). Surround yourself with believers who can hold you accountable and encourage you in your faith. And remember, God is faithful to complete the good work He has begun in you (Philippians 1:6). You are not defined by this mistake. You are defined by the love of Christ, who gave Himself for you.
