Chrysostom
Good and Faithful Servant
Do not reach for the wisdom that is outside, which terminates here and proceeds no further. That wisdom, though it seems to be wisdom, has become foolishness because it trusts all to itself and supposes it needs no help from the Spirit. What you request in so many parts of life is a list of anxieties, and the world’s strategy would have you grasping at each one as if securing them were the sum of your purpose. But we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the wisdom that has been hidden. The truly wise soul first separates itself from the tumults of ordinary life and sits at the feet of Infinite Wisdom.
You ask for wisdom, guidance, strategy, support, and blessing. This is the right cry, but let it be ordered rightly. Many who seek a strategy for business and a blessing for their body do everything not that they may be healthy, but that they may be wanton and kindle desire. This is to make provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts. To make true provision for the flesh is to care for it for health’s sake, as the Apostle bid Timothy use a little wine for his stomach. For your teeth, your leg, the ball on your thigh and abdomen, ask for healing indeed, but let it be with this single aim: that your body may be sound for service, not for soft and relaxed living. Spend all your chief industry on the care of spiritual things, and you will not be weighed down with these manifold desires.
Concerning a wife, the heavenly wisdom is not a wisdom of this world. Do not seek as they do who look only for outward form, but look for one who, having tasted that Well, will be affected as a soul that loves Christ. The woman at the well did not say, “Come, believe,” but “Come, see.” She knew with certainty what she had found. Seek a wife not to share merely in earthly comforts, but to be a fellow-heir of the grace of life, that your household may be founded not on the passing things that are like a dream. The present life is a sleep, and growing rich in a dream convicts a man of having been rich to no purpose. Let your prayer for a family be that it may be established for God’s glory, so that when you rise from this dream you may not be ashamed.
For everything to be for God’s glory, this is the hinge on which all turns. The wisdom that is of God seemed foolishness to those without, yet it overcomes the wisdom of the world. You ask for support in every area. See how He sat on a mountain, away from the forum and the city, instructing us to do nothing for display. When your soul is fixed on Him, the strategy will be given, not as a plan to clutch at gain, but as the path of daily faithfulness. The infinite wisdom sees the disciples doing what seems unlawful in the eyes of the crafty, yet He is their intercessor. Trust that He knows your frame and your needs, and seek first the kingdom that does not pass away.
