I need help knowing what is confirmation from the lord?

Beloved of All
I need help knowing what is confirmation from the lord? I’m feeling a stirring to pick a spouse There are 3 guys in mind. When I was praying today, I heard 1 of their names when I asked if I’d get married, and an image of a door slightly opening popped into my head. I’m not sure if I’m making stuff up or not. Would appreciate a prayer to gain clarity on what the Lord wants from me, if I’m meant to get married, how to discern his confirmations vs just my own delusions. The guy in question has been flaky, is not texting me much so I found it off. I’m so confused. How do I know a man likes me? He spoke to me first but then now traveled and hasn’t kept in touch (until Christmas when he’s back I guess) One of the other 3 is also abroad but it is clear to me that he’s interested, he texts me all the time. But I did not hear his name whilst praying.

We hear your confusion and your sincere desire to know the Lord's will for marriage, and we join with you in seeking clarity from Him together in Jesus' name.

We understand the stirring you feel and the question of whether hearing a name in prayer and seeing an image of a door slightly opening is confirmation from the Lord or your own thoughts. Scripture teaches us that our hearts can mislead us, for The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it Jeremiah 17:9. That is why we are told to test what we hear, Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God 1 John 4:1. A true confirmation from the Lord will never contradict His Word, it will align with Scripture, it will be confirmed by wise godly counsel, and it will bring the peace of Christ over time, not confusion and anxiety. We are told If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him James 1:5, and Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight Proverbs 3:5-6. The Lord primarily guides us through His written Word, through the inner witness of peace as we pray, Let the peace of God rule in your hearts Colossians 3:15, through the counsel of mature believers, Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established Proverbs 15:22, and through providential circumstances as He opens and closes doors in a way that does not require us to chase or manipulate.

We want to gently correct a common misunderstanding. Hearing a name while praying or picturing a door is not by itself a reliable sign that God has chosen that man for you. Our own longings can easily sound like a voice, especially when we are eager for marriage. We must not build a future on a fleeting impression. We also want to address how you are discerning these men. You mention three men in mind and you are trying to pick a spouse. Scripture shows marriage as a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and courtship should be entered with the goal of finding a godly spouse who is a Christian Believer, not simply a boyfriend or partner. Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity 2 Corinthians 6:14. Any man you consider for marriage must be a faithful follower of Christ, and the relationship must remain pure, for we are commanded to Flee sexual immorality 1 Corinthians 6:18 and to honor marriage, Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled Hebrews 13:4. Sex before or outside marriage is fornication and is never God's will for courtship.

Regarding how to know if a man likes you and is worth pursuing for marriage, a godly man who is seeking a wife will pursue with consistency, intentionality, and respect, not with flakiness. He who finds a wife finds a good thing Proverbs 18:22 implies a man who actively seeks and treasures. A man who spoke to you first but then became distant, does not text much, and has left you confused until Christmas is not demonstrating the steady, sacrificial love that a husband is called to show, Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly Ephesians 5:25. That pattern is worth noting. On the other hand, a man who texts you all the time may show interest, but frequency of texting alone is not confirmation of God's will either. Character, faith, and fruit matter more than attention. You will know them by their fruits Matthew 7:16. Does he love the Lord, is he involved in the church, does he guard purity, does he seek counsel, does he lead spiritually, does he keep his word. We encourage you not to chase either man, but to guard your heart, Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life Proverbs 4:23, and allow a godly man to pursue you in a clear and honorable way while you remain focused on delighting in the Lord, Delight yourself also in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart Psalm 37:4.

We also notice your request speaks of the Lord but does not mention Jesus Christ. We say this in love, for there is no other way to come to the Father or to be saved. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6, and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved Romans 10:9. It is only through faith in Jesus that our prayers are heard and our future is secure, whether God leads you to marriage or calls you to serve Him in singleness for a season.

We pray with you now. Father in heaven, we come before You together in the name of Jesus Christ, asking for wisdom and clarity for our sister. Lord, quiet her heart and remove confusion, and let Your Word be a lamp to her feet. Show her if marriage is Your will for her life and in Your timing, and help her not to lean on impressions or emotions but to trust You fully. Give her discernment to test every thought against Scripture and to seek godly counsel. Reveal the character and faith of these men, and close every door that is not from You and open the one that is, in Your perfect way. Help her to guard her heart and to keep herself pure, and help any man who would pursue her to do so with honor, consistency, and Christlike love with marriage as the goal. Teach her to delight in You above all else and to rest in Your peace which surpasses understanding. We ask that she would know Your will not through a fleeting name heard in prayer, but through Your Word, Your peace, and Your providence confirmed over time. We place her future spouse, if it is Your will, into Your hands, and we ask for a marriage that honors You as a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman. We pray all this in the mighty name of Jesus, our only Savior and mediator, amen.

We hear how much you want to honor the Lord in this and not mistake your own hopes for His voice. Wanting to get marriage right is a good desire, and it makes sense you feel tangled when one impression in prayer seems to point one way and the actual communication with that person feels inconsistent.

In our experience, what we think is a confirmation is clearer when we look at more than a single moment. A name coming to mind or a picture of a door can reflect our own thoughts, our hopes, or sometimes the Spirit's nudging, and it is hard to tell in the moment. That is why we usually need time, wise counsel, and a look at character and consistency to help weigh it. How someone pursues you, how steady and respectful and clear his interest is over weeks and months, tells you a lot. Constant texting is not the only measure, especially with travel, but a pattern of flakiness or leaving you to guess is worth paying attention to.

A next step that often helps is to step back from trying to pick among the three right now and invite one or two mature believers who know you well to walk with you. Share what you sensed in prayer and what you are seeing in how each man communicates and lives out his faith, and ask what they observe. Keep bringing honest, open-ended prayers to God, asking not only for a final answer but for wisdom for the next faithful step.

Father, we lift our sister to You. You know her desire for marriage and her desire to follow You. Give her clarity, steady peace, and trusted voices around her. Help her to see what is true and to trust You with timing and outcome. Lead her gently in Your will, in Jesus' name, amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your longing to know the will of the Lord in so weighty a matter as marriage is itself a good sign, and it is wise that you bring this confusion into the light of prayer rather than acting hastily upon it.

There is a revealed will of God which we must not violate, and there is a providential will of God which we should always consult. The revealed will is found plainly in His Word. Nine times out of ten, if you look to the Scriptures you will at least know what you must not do, and knowing what you must not do, you will be able to conclude what you may do. The providential will is seen in the circumstances that surround us, for all things are under regulation and have an appointed place in God's plan, and nothing happens but what He permits or ordains. We are to say and to feel from the heart, if the Lord wills, I will go or I will stay, I will marry or I will wait.

This is why impressions alone, such as hearing a name while praying or seeing an image of a door slightly opening, are not a safe rule for guidance. Our hearts are deceitful and our imaginations are active, and we may easily mistake our own stirring thoughts for the voice of God. If you live near to God, He will indeed guide you, but that guidance will never contradict His Word, it will humble your own will rather than flatter it, and it will be confirmed by more than a fleeting feeling. The true posture of prayer in such matters is to combine the two prayers our Lord taught us, to say with holy boldness, Father, I will, and in the same breath to bow and say, not as I will, but as Thou wilt. The work of the Spirit is to change the human will and make us willing in the day of His power, working in us to will to do of His own good pleasure.

As to discerning a man's interest and character, providence speaks more clearly than impressions. A godly man who seeks a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, as God ordained marriage to be, will show it by steady, honorable pursuit, not by flakiness and silence. Scripture calls a man to love as Christ loved the church, to lead, to provide, to protect purity, and to keep himself and you from sin until that covenant is made. Occasional attention followed by long absence, especially while he is away and makes little effort to keep wholesome and appropriate communication, is not the pattern of one who is earnestly seeking to win and cherish a wife. It is right to notice that. The man who is consistent, who texts with respect and regularity, who shows interest in your soul and not only in your company, gives a clearer providential sign, though even that must be tested further.

Do not choose on the ground of a name heard in prayer while passing over character seen in life. Instead, test all things in this way.

First, bring your desire under the Word. Is each of these men a true believer in Jesus Christ, for salvation is through Him alone, and a believer should seek to be united in marriage only with a believer? Does he walk uprightly, flee sexual immorality, and honor the Lord's design that intimacy and living together belong only within marriage?

Second, watch providence and character over time. Is he faithful in small things, does he keep his word, does he honor authorities and family, does he serve the church, does he pursue you with clarity and patience rather than confusion?

Third, seek counsel. Do not discern alone. Ask a mature pastor, godly parents or older women in the church who know you and can observe these men without the stir of your own affections.

Fourth, pray not only for a sign, but for submission. Ask the Lord to make your will like His will, to quiet your heart, and to close the doors that should be closed and open the one that should be opened in His time.

Here is a prayer you may pray before the Lord:

O Lord God, who art King and whose will is the axle of the universe, I come to Thee through Jesus Christ alone, my only hope of salvation. Thou knowest my desire for marriage and my confusion. I lay my will before Thee and say, not as I will, but as Thou wilt. Guide me by Thy Word and by Thy providence. Keep me from delusion and from following my own imagination. Make me willing to wait, to obey, and to walk in purity. If it be Thy will that I marry, lead me to a man who loves Thee above all, who will keep covenant faithfully as one man with one woman for life, and who will lead our home in holiness. If it be Thy will that I wait or remain as I am, make me content to serve Thee there. Give wisdom to my pastors and counselors as they help me, and let all my ways be ordered by Thy grace. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Be not hasty. The Lord does not need to hurry you into a decision with a whisper and a picture. He will guide the soul that bows to His superior judgment and waits upon Him. Keep your heart with all diligence, keep yourself from all that would defile the covenant of marriage before it is made, and trust that He who has promised to withhold no good thing from them that walk uprightly will make His way plain in due season.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I ask you to give this sister wisdom and a calm mind. Help her to know your will through your Word and through wise counsel, and guard her from mistaking her own wishes for your voice. Lead her in holiness and patience, keep her pure and at peace, and help her to trust you with her future. If marriage is your good plan for her, guide her clearly to a man who loves you first and who will love her faithfully as a husband should within the covenant you designed. If you would have her wait, give her contentment and strength to serve you fully in this season. Make her sensitive to your correction and joyful to obey you. Amen.

Your honesty in bringing this before the Lord is a good and right step, and your desire to know His will rather than simply follow your own feelings is pleasing to Him.

The first place of certainty is not an inner impression, but the revealed will of God in Scripture. The good news of the kingdom is that God calls us to turn from sin and put our trust in Jesus Christ, and to come after Him and follow Him. When that surrender is first, every other decision, including marriage, finds its proper place. If you have not already settled that you belong fully to Christ, that is the foundation. From there, guidance for marriage grows out of walking closely with Him.

In prayer, the pattern Jesus taught and lived is surrender. Like the man with leprosy who knelt and said, if you are willing you can make me clean, and like Jesus Himself in the garden who prayed, not what I will but what you will, we are to bring our desires openly and then place them under the Father's will. That posture protects you from forcing an answer. Instead of praying, Lord make this one be the answer, pray, Lord I desire marriage if it is your will for me, I desire this person if he is the one you have for me, but above all let your will be done, and make me willing to receive it. There is victory and peace in that surrender, even before you have the answer, because you are no longer fighting to make your will happen.

Because our hearts are so able to create what we want to hear, impressions alone are not reliable guidance. Hearing a name while praying, or seeing a picture of a door opening a little, may feel significant, but it may also be your own thoughts, hopes, or anxieties. Our preconceived ideas and strong desires can close our minds to what the Spirit is actually saying through the Word. God gives ears to hear to those who remain humble and pliable before Him, willing to be corrected and willing to wait. A true confirmation from the Lord will not contradict Scripture, it will not require you to ignore wisdom, and it will usually be confirmed outside of your own mind through clear, consistent means.

That is why God does not guide only inwardly. He guides through His Word, through a surrendered and patient prayer life, through the counsel of mature believers who know you, through the character and fruit you observe over time, and through circumstances He opens in His timing. God is very conscious of timing and does not force things prematurely. When He opens a door, it is not a vague half image that leaves you more confused, but a clear provision that aligns with wisdom and righteousness.

Applied to your situation, this helps sort what you are seeing. A man who speaks to you first but then is inconsistent, who does not communicate for weeks and leaves you guessing, is not showing the steady, intentional pursuit that marks a man who truly values you and is seeking marriage. Interest is shown by consistent, respectful, and clear pursuit over time, not by flakiness or silence. Distance alone does not explain a lack of care, especially when you compare it to another man who shows clear and faithful interest and communicates regularly. You do not need to decode hidden signals. A godly man seeking a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman will make his intentions known plainly, he will honor you and the Lord in how he treats you, and he will not keep you in confusion.

It is also unwise to hold three options before you at once and try to choose by a spiritual sign. That keeps your heart divided and invites you to interpret every small impression as a final answer. A better path is to step back from trying to pick, to surrender the whole question of marriage itself to the Lord, and to focus on following Christ faithfully where you are. As you will to obey what He has already shown you in Scripture, to live purely, to be involved in fellowship, to serve, He will give you the ability to keep walking in that obedience, and He will make the next steps clearer.

Do not feel pressured to make a decision before Christmas or any other date. Wait on the Lord. Seek counsel from a wise, older believer or pastor who can know you and these situations more personally and speak honestly to you. Test every impression by the Word, and be willing to let God close a door as well as open one.

I will pray for you.

Father, in the name of Jesus, I bring this daughter before you. You know her desire for marriage and her confusion about how to hear your voice. Give her a heart fully surrendered to your will, to say from the heart, not my will but yours be done. Wash away confusion and help her to hear you through your Word with clarity. Give her discernment to distinguish her own thoughts from your guidance, and give her patience to wait for your perfect timing. Guard her heart from pursuing what is unstable or unclear, and if marriage is your will for her, lead her in your time to a man who loves you first and who will love her faithfully, purely, and consistently within the covenant you designed. In the meantime, make her strong in following Christ, and fill her with your peace as she trusts you. Amen.

Keep seeking the Lord Himself more than a sign, and He who loves you will not leave you without direction as you walk humbly and patiently before Him.
