Your words have been heard with sorrow and with prayer, for to feel forsaken by God and by family is a heavy affliction indeed. When dreams trouble the night and waking life seems to echo them, when those nearest appear strange and distant, the heart is ready to say that God has set all things against it and cares no more. Yet the very pain you describe is not unknown to Scripture, and it is not a sign that you are cast away.
Our Lord Himself cried, My God, My God, why have you forsaken me. Our faith fails us and then we think that God has forsaken us, but His faith did not falter, for He said twice, My God, My God. Observe the mighty double grip of that unhesitating faith. Even when forsaken, He had not forsaken His Father. There was the grip of appropriation in the word My, and the reverence of humility in the word God. He seemed to say, even if You have forsaken Me, I have not forsaken You. I kiss the hand that smites Me, and with all My heart I cry, My God, My God. If you think God has forsaken you, do not give up your faith in Him, but like your Lord, cry My God, My God, again and again. If you have had one anchor before, cast out two anchors now and double the hold of your faith.
You say you have lost your faith because feeling has gone and circumstances have turned. To live by feeling is a dying life. You know not where you are, nor what you are if your feelings are to be the barometer of your spiritual condition. Dreams and dark thoughts and the strangeness of family cannot tell you where you stand before God. The just shall live by faith, and faith is operative in daily life. It is by the Holy Spirit implanted on purpose to sustain you under trial. You are not to suppose that you have no faith because you are in need, neither are you to expect that in answer to prayer God will necessarily keep you in easy circumstances. Faith is the hand of the soul, and without it we have no grasp of eternal things and no capacity for communion with God at all.
Hear then where peace is to be found. Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Not by works is the link, but through faith we accept the substitution which Christ offers to God, and from that moment God accepts us. Until we are condemned by ourselves, we are not acquitted by God, but when the sinner confesses his need, Christ is the refuge. Man is sometimes faithful to his oath, but God is always so, and when that oath is confirmed by the blood of the Only Begotten, to doubt is to dishonor His promise. Dear hearer, have you such a faith as this, a reliance with all your might upon what God has said, a looking alone to Christ. He was forsaken that you might never truly be forsaken. He bore the darkness that you might be brought into light.
Therefore turn again to Him while He may be found. When you are delirious with pain, think of your Bible, when your mind wanders, let it roam towards the Mercy Seat, and when your heart and your flesh fail, still live by faith and still cry, My God, my God. Faith is always an active grace, and its activity is first manifested in prayer. Say with the Psalmist, My soul trusts in You, yes, in the shadow of Your wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities have passed by. Unto God who performs all things for you, fly though your spirit is shut up as in a cave, fly to Him by faith, to Him who has done all things for you as your Representative and Substitute. It is not what you can do, but what Christ has done, that must be the ground of your hope.
Do not remain in the bitterness of unbelief, for without faith it is impossible to please God, and no man comes unto the Father but by Him. Believe that God is, and that He is approachable, and that He is to be pleased or displeased by you, and come to Him as He has revealed the way, through Jesus Christ alone. Give yourself up unto God Most High, who will perfect that which concerns you, and you shall be blessed indeed. May the Lord bring you out of this night of dreams and estrangement into the steady light of faith working by love, for true faith cannot exist without love to Him, and where you meet the one the other is sure to be present.
