I feel hopeless

I just read a post on Reddit looking up “Hope in Hopelessness” that talks about “The only hope is in hopelessness” and told a parable about a burning building and you’re on the top floor and the fire’s on the first floor making its way to you. It then gave two options: 1.) you could hope that someone will figure something out and save you. Or you could abandon hope and take action even if it has undesirable consequences. It really did feel like a hopeless post. I’m writing about this because this is how I feel. I don’t know if in a true sense like what is being described here but… Also because I think there could be some Christian thematic elements sprinkled in there. It reminds me of myself and I guess my case. I think about all the unhappiness and struggling we’re all going through in the world but I don’t have true love in me to do anything about it. I try to keep my eyes on the cross and Jesus but I constantly fail. It’s been over five years now and I just don’t think I can endure.

We hear the deep despair in your words, and we want you to know that the hopelessness you feel is not the end of your story—because the God we serve is the God of impossible victories, the One who turns ashes into beauty and mourning into joy. The parable you read is a stark picture of human helplessness, but it is missing the most critical truth: **you are not alone in that burning building.** There is One who has already descended into the flames to carry you out, and His name is Jesus Christ. The world’s “hope” is a fragile thing—built on uncertainty, human effort, and fleeting circumstances. But the hope we have in Christ is an **anchor for the soul, sure and steadfast** (Hebrews 6:19). It does not depend on our strength, our wisdom, or our ability to "figure something out." It depends entirely on **Him who has already overcome the world** (John 16:33).

You said, *“I don’t have true love in me to do anything about it.”* Oh, beloved, this is where the gospel meets you in your brokenness. You are not called to *muster* love—you are called to **receive it**. *“We love him, because he first loved us”* (1 John 4:19). When you feel empty, when you feel you have nothing left to give, that is the moment to **stop striving and start surrendering**. Jesus did not say, *“Come to Me when you have it all together.”* He said, *“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest”* (Matthew 11:28). Your inability to endure is not a sign of failure—it is an invitation to **lean entirely on Him**.

You also mentioned that you *“constantly fail”* when you try to keep your eyes on the cross. Let us ask you this: **Who told you that your worth is tied to your performance?** The enemy whispers lies that your faith must be perfect, your devotion unwavering, your love without flaw—but the truth is, **your salvation was never about your ability to endure. It was always about Christ’s finished work.** *“Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ”* (Philippians 1:6). Even when you stumble, even when you feel you cannot go on, **He is holding you fast**.

Now, let us address something vital: **you spoke of the cross, but we did not hear you speak the name of Jesus.** There is no power in the cross apart from the One who hung there for you. There is no hope in suffering unless it is united to **Him who suffered in your place**. The apostle Peter declared, *“There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved!”* (Acts 4:12). If you have not yet surrendered your life to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, **this is the hour to do so**. Confess with your mouth that He is Lord, believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you **will** be saved (Romans 10:9). Without Him, all efforts to endure are like building on sand. But in Him? *“I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me”* (Philippians 4:13).

As for the state of the world and the suffering you see—yes, it is overwhelming. But listen to the words of Jesus: *“In the world you have oppression; but cheer up! I have overcome the world”* (John 16:33). You are not called to fix everything. You are called to **be faithful in the small things, to love those He places in your path, and to trust that He is working all things for His glory**. Even when you cannot see it.

So let us pray for you now, with the authority and hope we have in Christ:

**Heavenly Father, we lift up this precious soul before You, the One who sees every tear, who collects every sorrow, and who holds the brokenhearted close. Lord, the enemy has whispered lies of hopelessness, but we declare that **You are the God of hope, who fills us with all joy and peace in believing, that we may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit** (Romans 15:13). Father, where there is despair, pour out Your **living hope** (1 Peter 1:3). Where there is weakness, let Your strength be made perfect (2 Corinthians 12:9). Where there is exhaustion, renew this one with the **joy of Your salvation** (Psalm 51:12).

Lord Jesus, You are the **Author and Finisher of our faith** (Hebrews 12:2). When this one feels they cannot endure, remind them that **You have already endured the cross, despising its shame, and are now seated at the right hand of the Father**—interceding for them even now. Holy Spirit, breathe fresh wind into their lungs. Replace the spirit of heaviness with the **garment of praise** (Isaiah 61:3). Let them know, deep in their soul, that **they are not abandoned**. They are **chosen, loved, and kept by You** (Jude 1:1).

Father, if there is any stronghold of hopelessness, any lie that has taken root, we **bind it in the name of Jesus and command it to be uprooted**. Let the truth of Your Word **drown out every accusation of the enemy**. Remind this one that **their life is hidden with Christ in God** (Colossians 3:3), and nothing—**not despair, not failure, not the weight of the world—can separate them from Your love** (Romans 8:38-39).

We pray for a **divine encounter**, Lord. Let them **feel Your presence** in a way they cannot deny. Open their eyes to see that **You are not distant—You are near**. You are not silent—**You are speaking**. You are not unmoved—**You are interceding**. And when the waves of despair rise again, let them hear You say, *“Peace, be still”* (Mark 4:39).

We thank You, Father, that **You do not leave us as orphans** (John 14:18). You are our **ever-present help in trouble** (Psalm 46:1). And so we trust You with this one’s heart, their mind, their future. **Restore to them the joy of Your salvation. Renew a right spirit within them. And let them rise up, not in their own strength, but in Yours.**

In the mighty and matchless name of **Jesus Christ**, our Hope and our Redeemer, we pray. **Amen.**

Beloved, **do not give up**. The fact that you are still reaching out, still seeking, still wrestling with these things is evidence that **God is not done with you**. The psalmist cried out, *“Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him for the saving help of his presence”* (Psalm 42:5). **Keep hoping in God.** Not in your ability to endure, not in some vague idea of “love,” but in **Him who is Love itself** (1 John 4:8).

If you have not yet surrendered your life to Jesus, **do it today**. Confess your need for Him. Ask Him to be your Lord. There is **no hopelessness He cannot redeem, no brokenness He cannot restore**. And if you *have* trusted in Him but feel far from Him, **return to your first love** (Revelation 2:4). Repent of any unbelief, any self-reliance, any bitterness. **He is waiting with open arms.**

You are **not** on the top floor of a burning building with no way out. You are **in the hands of the One who walked through fire with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—and not a hair on their heads was singed** (Daniel 3:27). **He will carry you through.** Cling to Him. **He is your hope.**

We hear your cry, dear one. We're here with you, holding onto hope together. Like a lighthouse in the stormiest sea, Jesus stands unyielding, His light piercing the thickest fog. He sees you, He knows your pain, and He's calling you by name.

Remember, it's not about your strength or your ability to endure. It's about His strength, made perfect in your weakness. When you feel you can't go on, lean into Him. He's right there, waiting to carry you. As the old hymn says, "Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace."

You're not alone in this burning building. Jesus is already here, in the flames, reaching out His hand to you. Trust Him. He won't let you fall. He's got you, and He's not letting go.

Keep fighting, beloved. Keep hoping. Even when it's hard, even when it hurts. Because He's worth it. He's worth every ounce of your strength, every drop of your tears. And remember, even in your darkest moments, even when you feel forsaken, you are deeply, unconditionally loved.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

We want to thank you for allowing us the sacred honor of lifting you before the Lord in these heavy days. Your honesty about the depth of your struggle has moved us to pray with even greater urgency, knowing the weight of the despair you carry. The image of feeling trapped—like the flames are rising and hope is fading—resonates deeply with how real spiritual and emotional exhaustion can be. But we want you to know we are still here, still standing with you in the gap, still believing that God sees you in ways we cannot.

It’s been several days since you shared this burden, and we long to hear how your heart is now. Has the Lord brought even a flicker of light into this darkness? A verse, a moment of peace, a reminder that He has not abandoned you? If so, we would love to rejoice with you and give Him praise. If the heaviness remains, if the nights still feel long and the cross still feels distant, we want you to know you are not alone in this. Post again. Let us continue to cry out to Jesus on your behalf, to ask Him to replace this crushing weight with His yoke—which He promises is easy, His burden which is light.

We are also praying specifically against the lie that you lack the love to endure. The love of Christ is not a feeling we muster—it is a force He pours into us, even when we feel empty. You do not have to manufacture strength; you only have to receive His. Five years is a long season, but our God is the God of "suddenly." He can turn mourning into dancing in an instant. He can take what feels like ashes and make something beautiful. Keep your eyes on Him, even if it’s through tears. Keep clinging, even if your grip is weak. He is faithful, even when we are faithless.

Please don’t walk this road in silence. Update us. Lean on us. We are here as your brothers and sisters in Christ, and we will not stop interceding for you. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. We love you, and we are fighting for you in prayer. In Jesus’ name.
