Disciple of Prayer
I feel cursed, I lost ### dollars and a diamond bracelet when on a trip. I’m clumsy and keep losing my things. Obviously my parents got so mad :( I don’t feel responsible. I’m a little ditzy and not so bright. I keep praying for a better “mind” but it feels like things get worse. My family is understandably exasperated with me and my irresponsibility. How do I make amends? They shouted at me and don’t want to talk to me. But I keep making mistakes, more than others. I feel so defective and I KNOW I’m trying hard but I’ve lost faith anything can change. I just picture my life as a list of huge failures past and to come.

The tough thing is I’ve promised that before and I don’t have faith I CAN change :/ it keeps happening. I keep feeling foggy/clumsy in my head
It’s why I prayed about it before my trip, I KNEW something would happen
I take medication for anxiety and psychosis so I also suffer mentally. I feel handicapped and not fully human 😭

We hear your pain and we are lifting you up together before the Lord in Jesus' name. We grieve with you over the loss of the money and the diamond bracelet on your trip, over the hurt and anger in your family, and over the heavy feeling that you are cursed, defective, and not fully human. The Lord sees you and knows how hard you are trying, and He draws near to the brokenhearted. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

We want to gently correct the thought that you are cursed or defective. If you belong to Christ, you are not under a curse, for Galatians 3:13 says Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. And you are not defective or less than human because you struggle with clumsiness, forgetfulness, anxiety and psychosis. You are fearfully and wonderfully made, Psalm 139:14, and made in the image of God, Genesis 1:27. Your struggles and your need for medication do not make you less human or less loved by God. At the same time, God does not want you to remain in shame or hopelessness picturing your life as only a list of failures past and to come. Jeremiah 29:11 says For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Romans 8:28 reminds us that to those who love God all things work together for good, even our failures when we bring them to Him.

We also need to lovingly address responsibility. You shared that you do not feel responsible and that you have described yourself as ditzy and not so bright, yet you also recognize your family is exasperated by irresponsibility. Scripture calls us to steward well what God has entrusted to us, even small things. Luke 16:10 says He who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much. Proverbs 21:5 says The plans of the diligent surely lead to profit; and everyone who is hasty surely rushes to poverty. Feeling foggy or clumsy in your head does not remove the call to grow in diligence, but it does mean we need both grace and practical help. We encourage you to continue faithfully with your prescribed treatment for anxiety and psychosis and to seek wise counsel from your doctors and from mature believers, for God often brings healing and stability through both prayer and proper care. 2 Timothy 1:7 says For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control, and we can ask Him daily to renew our minds. Romans 12:2 says Be transformed by the renewing of your mind, and James 1:5 says But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

You asked how to make amends when your parents shouted at you and do not want to talk to you, and when you have promised before and fear you cannot change. We encourage you to honor your father and mother as Exodus 20:12 commands, which includes humbly owning what happened without excuses. Proverbs 28:13 says He who conceals his sins doesn’t prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them obtains mercy. A heartfelt confession that takes responsibility, asks for forgiveness, and offers what restitution you can, even if you cannot replace the full value right away, reflects the heart of Zacchaeus in Luke 19:8. Do not rely only on a promise in your own strength, for Philippians 1:6 says He who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. Instead show a changed pattern with practical steps, such as keeping a simple checklist before leaving any place, using one secure place for valuables, setting phone reminders, asking a trusted friend or family member to help double check, and praying for diligence before acting. Give your parents time and space if they need it, continue to show respect and patience, and keep seeking peace. Ephesians 4:32 calls us to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you, and that forgiveness is needed on both sides.

We noticed you said you keep praying but you did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We want to share gently that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and salvation. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. To pray in Jesus' name is not just words at the end of a prayer, it is coming to God trusting that Jesus died for our sins and rose again and that His blood covers us. If you have not yet put your trust fully in Jesus as Lord and Savior, we encourage you to confess your sin, believe in Him, and receive His grace. 1 John 1:9 says If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. His grace is sufficient even when we feel weak, for 2 Corinthians 12:9 says My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come to You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We lift up this dear one who feels cursed, foggy, clumsy, and defective, who is carrying shame over what was lost and over broken trust with parents. Lord, wash away the lie that she is cursed or less than human and let her know she is Your beloved child, fearfully and wonderfully made. Forgive her sins as she confesses them, and help her to walk in Your forgiveness and not in condemnation. We ask You to renew her mind, grant her wisdom, clarity, and a sound mind, and calm her anxiety. Help her to be faithful with what You entrust to her and to grow in diligence step by step. Bring healing and stability as she continues with needed care, and surround her with patient, supportive people. Soften her parents' hearts and give them grace to forgive and to speak without provoking, and give her humility and courage to make amends with honesty and restitution where she is able. Restore communication in that family. Give her hope for the future, that she would not see only failures to come but Your good plans to give her hope. Keep her eyes on Jesus, in whose name we have access to Your throne, and let her know Your power is made perfect in weakness. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our only hope. Amen.

We encourage you to keep bringing your mind and your daily tasks to the Lord each morning, to keep short simple systems to guard what is entrusted to you, and to thank God for small victories as He faithfully completes His work in you. Philippians 4:6-7 says In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

We hear how heavy this feels for you right now. Losing the money and the bracelet on your trip, having your parents so upset and not wanting to talk, and carrying the sense that you are clumsy or defective would leave anyone feeling worn down. It makes sense you would feel foggy and discouraged, especially when you have been praying and trying hard and still feel like the same mistakes happen.

We want to gently separate two things you named. You did lose something valuable and your family is hurt, and it is good to want to make amends for that. But losing something does not mean you are cursed or not fully human. We see you as a person made in God's image, struggling with real pressures, not as a list of failures past and to come. When we feel hopeless, one mistake can feel like proof our whole life will be that way and will never change, but one painful event is not the whole story of who you are.

For next steps, as you are able:

For your parents, give them a little space to cool down, then consider a short, sincere note taking responsibility for the loss and asking when they might be willing to talk again. You don't need to promise you will never make a mistake, just that you care about their trust and want to learn.

Since you mentioned medication for anxiety and psychosis and feeling foggy in your head, please let your prescriber or counselor know about that fogginess soon, alongside prayer, so they can walk with you on that part too.

Father, we lift our friend to You in Jesus' name. You see her trying and her hurt and her weariness. Give her rest, clear guidance for the next conversation with her family, steady support from those caring for her health, and a quiet reminder that she is not forgotten or cursed but held by You. Lead her one step at a time. Amen.

There is a burden in your words that many a tried soul will understand, and it is well that you have poured it out plainly before the Lord who hears the breathing desire even when the lips can only stammer.

You speak of feeling cursed because you have lost what was precious and have often lost things before, and because your mind feels foggy and clumsy. Let this whisper drive away despair, there is forgiveness with God. The Scripture says, There is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. It does not say there is forgiveness for this sin or for that, but there is forgiveness, and where God draws no limit do not you draw any. It is a divine forgiveness, I even I am he that blotteth out thy transgressions, and it is a surprising forgiveness, so free and so full that the Lord himself speaks as if to assure the trembling heart that even the chief of sinners may have it. If you feel you have nothing to pay, like one who comes to his creditor empty handed, know that Christ has paid the debt for all who trust him, and that forgiveness is not only for the first moment of faith but continues daily, for the act of forgiveness is a continuous one. You are not cursed when you are in Christ, you are forgiven, and that forgiveness is complete and eternal, keeping no back reckonings and retaining no reserves of anger.

You also speak as though you were defective and not fully human because your mind is afflicted and you take medication for anxiety and psychosis, and because you call yourself ditzy and not so bright. You are not less human for suffering in mind and body. You are made in the image of God, and the Lord Jesus lived and died for the weak and the weary. He gently rebuked his disciples but he never spoke to them in anger, and his life was crowned by his dying prayer, Father forgive them for they know not what they do. He knows your frame and remembers that you are dust, and he will in no wise cast out any that comes to him. To take the help that God has provided for your health is not a failure of faith, it is prudence, and prayer and means should go together. Continue to seek wise care for your mind and body while you seek the Lord with that living prayer which is more than a form.

You say you prayed before your trip and yet loss came, and now you picture your life as a list of huge failures past and to come, and you have lost faith that anything can change because you have promised before and failed again. Do as Martin Luther did when a brother said to him, Do you not say in the Creed, I believe in the forgiveness of sins, now believe in the forgiveness of sins for yourself. First forgiveness, then healing. The Lord forgives absolutely and then by his grace he teaches our hands to walk more steadily. Your promises alone will not keep you, but his grace can make you more watchful day by day, not perfect at once, but growing in care.

Concerning anxiety, hear the Saviour's word, do not be so affected by external things as to get into a state of worry and fretfulness. Be prudent. You have a duty to be careful with what is entrusted to you, whether money or a bracelet or any other trust, and it is right to take pains to be a good steward. Yet I have never discovered that anxiety has comforted anybody or that it has brought any grist to the mill. The very anxiety which arises through your being in a difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty. A foggy and clumsy feeling often grows stronger when the heart is fretting. Seek to be calm in prayer, and then be practical in small things, keep a set place for precious things, make a simple list before you travel, ask a trusted friend to help you check, and move a little more slowly when you are handling what is valuable. These are not great deeds, but they are the fruits of a careful love.

How then shall you make amends with your parents who are exasperated and have shouted and will not now talk with you. Study the pattern set before us, even as Christ forgave you so also do ye. Forgiveness among us is to be a joint stock business in which we all take large shares. Go to them when they will hear you, with few words and without excuse, own what was lost, tell them you are grieved for the loss and for the trouble you have caused, and ask their forgiveness. If you are able to make any restitution for the money, do so as you are able, even if little by little, for that shows truthfulness. Do not promise that you will never fail again, for that promise has wounded both them and you, rather promise that you will walk more carefully and will ask for help when you feel foggy, and then let your steadiness over time speak louder than words. Give them space if they need it, continue to honour them quietly, and pray for them. If they remain angry for a season, remember that you have a Father in heaven whose forgiveness is already sure to the penitent, and that will keep you from despair while you wait.

You are not beyond change because you have failed often. The gifts and calling of God are without repentance, he does not play fast and loose with men. He who forgives will also form you anew, not by your own strength but by his Spirit. Bring your foggy mind and your clumsy hands and your anxious heart to him just as you are, and ask not only for a better mind but for a mind stayed upon him. He can give you a sound mind and a steadier step, and even where infirmity remains he can give you peace within it.

There is forgiveness now, at this moment there is forgiveness through Jesus Christ his Son. Believe it for yourself, and let that assurance lift the weight that makes you feel cursed and defective. You are not forgotten, you are not cast aside, and your life is not a list of failures in his sight. It is a life he would redeem and restore, and he is able to keep you and to make your path more sure as you look to him day by day.
