dear god, i have no idea what im doing but im trying this out. im still a student, but i feel like im drowning even though half the world would argue i havent even begun life yet. my whole life ive done music as a hobby because it was expected of me, but the first passion i ever found out i truly had was for acting. i want to be an actor with all my heart, but i dont know what to do. please help me find the talent as well as the passion because i have an overwhelming amount of passion that overweighs my talent. thank you

We hear the cry of your heart, and we come before the Lord together, lifting you up in prayer. You are not alone in this feeling of uncertainty, many of God’s servants felt the same way when called to their purpose. Remember Moses, who doubted his ability to speak, yet God used him mightily (Exodus 4:10-12). Or David, who was overlooked by his own family but chosen by God to be king (1 Samuel 16:7). The Lord does not call the equipped; He equips the called.

First, we must address the foundation of your request. You mention "dear god," but we must emphasize that it is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). If you have not already, we encourage you to surrender your life to Him, confessing your sins and believing in His death and resurrection for your salvation. Without Christ, we cannot truly know God or His will for our lives.

Now, regarding your passion for acting, this is not a coincidence. The Lord gives gifts and desires to His children for His glory. "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them" (Ephesians 2:10). Your longing to act may very well be part of that calling. But we must also caution you: the entertainment industry is filled with temptations, pride, immorality, and idolatry. If this is the path God has for you, you must walk in holiness, seeking roles that honor Him and refusing those that glorify sin.

Your concern about talent versus passion is valid. Passion without skill can lead to frustration, but skill without passion is empty. We pray that God would refine both in you. Seek training, classes, workshops, local theater, where you can grow. "Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve kings. He won’t serve common people" (Proverbs 22:29). But also remember that God often uses the weak things of the world to shame the strong (1 Corinthians 1:27).

We rebuke the spirit of comparison that tells you others have it easier or that you’re "not enough." The enemy wants to paralyze you with doubt, but God says, "Commit your way to the Lord. Trust also in him, and he will do this" (Psalm 37:5). You don’t have to have it all figured out, just take the next step in faith.

Let us pray for you now:

"Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up this dear one who is searching for purpose and direction. Lord, You know the desires of their heart, and we ask that You would confirm whether acting is the path You have for them. If it is, equip them with both the passion and the skill to serve You in it. If not, redirect their steps to what You have prepared. Guard their heart from pride, comparison, and the snares of the entertainment world. Give them wisdom, discipline, and opportunities to grow. Remind them that their worth is found in You alone, not in success or the approval of others. Strengthen their faith when doubt creeps in, and let them walk in the confidence of Your calling. We ask all these things in Jesus’ name, Amen."

You are not drowning, you are being shaped. Keep seeking the Lord, and He will make your path clear. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6). We are praying for you.

We hear how much this matters to you, and we are glad you had the courage to write it out. Wanting something this much can feel like drowning when no clear path has opened yet, but it is not too late and you are not behind. The passion you feel is real fuel. Talent is not always something you either have or you don’t. It grows in the doing, through training, repetition, honest feedback, and time.

A good next step is to find one place where you can practice the craft this season: a school or community theater audition, an acting class, a drama club, or a conversation with a drama teacher who can give you a realistic sense of your strengths and where to grow. Let that person know you are serious. Keep your music as part of your story, but let yourself begin acting without needing to be instantly impressive. You are allowed to be a beginner who loves the work. If the drowning feeling gets heavier, please also talk with a school counselor or another trusted adult; that is wise support, not a detour.

Jesus, thank You for the desire You have placed in this student’s heart. Meet the overwhelm with Your steady presence. Give them wisdom about the next small step, people who will teach and encourage them honestly, and patience to grow in skill. Guard them from shame and comparison. Open the right doors in Your time, and give them courage to walk through them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

You are asking about a profession; God is speaking about a calling. You say you are drowning, yet you are still breathing, still praying, still writing out your heart. That is no small thing. The Lord Jesus stands and cries, "Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." You are labouring under the weight of a passion you cannot yet carry, and you are heavy laden with the fear that you have no talent. Come first to Him. Rest from the turbulence of inward passion and the drudgery of self is not found by securing a place on the stage; it is found by taking His yoke upon you and learning of Him.

You say your passion outweighs your talent. That may be true, but it is not the deepest matter. The servant with one talent was not cast out because he had only one; he was condemned because he buried it. Do not bury yours. If God has given you a burning desire, do not let the fear of having too little skill make you hide it in the earth. But do not make an idol of it either. Consecrate it. Lay it at the feet of Christ and ask not first for fame or ability, but for grace to use whatever He has given for His glory. The talent is His to give and His to increase; your part is to be found faithful with one before you beg for five.

And remember, effectual calling is a personal thing. Put yourself, even in your student room, into a mental solitude, and let the voice of God come to you, even to you. If you have a desire to come to Christ, if you are forcing your way through your confusion to get to Him, it is because He is calling you. Do not think your passion for acting is the first call. The first call is to come down from your own plans, to be found in Him, and to have your heart lifted up to the high things of God, eternity, heaven, and holiness. Until Christ is your portion, every profession will be a snare. Once He is your portion, He may give you the stage, or He may take that desire and transform it, but either way you will not drown.

You prayed, "Please help me find the talent." Pray rather, "Lord, help me find You, and then do with my passion as You will." He is in one mind, and none can turn Him. What His soul desireth, that He doeth. Your present confusion has not come to Him out of order. Stop looking at the footlights until you have looked at the cross of Christ. Then, if He gives you a platform, you will stand on it as one who has first stood before Him.

You have come to God with no idea what you are doing, and that is not a bad beginning. The feeling of drowning is real, but it does not prove you have no gift. It proves the desire is strong. The servant with one talent was not punished for having only one. He was punished for burying it. You say your passion outweighs your talent. Then let the passion become the reason you do the slow, hidden work of training, not the reason you despair.

The servant with two talents was not asked why he had not produced five. He was counted faithful because he gained with what he had. Do the same with acting. Take classes. Read plays. Study good performances. Audition for small things. Serve others through what you learn. Ask God for skill, yes, but also ask Him to make you faithful with the amount you now hold. For nothing is so pleasing to God as to live for the common advantage. Use the gift for good, not only for your own name.

Only keep this guard. Love acting, but do not worship it. If a role or a script would require you to call evil good or to glorify what Christ forbids, turn it down. God can enlarge the talent, but He does not bless a conscience we knowingly defile. You are not too young and not too small. Bring the one talent and do not bury it.

Your honesty in saying you do not know what you are doing is itself a prayer that God hears. Feeling overwhelmed and as if you are drowning while others tell you that life has not even begun is a very heavy place to be, and it is not strange to feel that way as a student carrying expectations from others and pressure about the future. The Psalms give language for this. When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I. That rock is God himself. He alone is your salvation and your defense. In another psalm the same heart says, when my spirit was overwhelmed within me, you knew my path. You may not know where to turn, but God knows the way you are walking. Prayer in those moments shifts your focus from the size of the problem to the greatness of God, and as you lay your troubles before Him, anxiety can lift and be replaced with assurance that He is with you and will help you.

You spoke of passion that feels larger than talent, and of music done because it was expected and acting that feels like true passion. Scripture speaks of talents in a way that can help you. In the time of Jesus a talent was first a weight, like a measure of silver or gold, a very heavy amount. A master entrusted different amounts to his servants according to their ability and then went on a journey. When he returned he asked what they had done with what was entrusted. Two servants had put what they were given to work and brought increase, and they were commended and given greater responsibility. One servant out of fear hid his talent in the ground and brought it back exactly as it was. He said he was afraid because he thought the master was hard, but the master answered that the real problem was a wrong view of him and unwillingness to work. That servant was called wicked and lazy, and what he had was taken and given to the one who had been faithful. The lesson is not to compare how much each received, for each received according to ability, but to be faithful with what you have been given and to offer it back to God with increase rather than burying it out of fear that it is not enough.

God has entrusted something to each person, and both your background in music and your desire to act are part of what He has placed in your hands. Your gifts find their greatest release and deepest joy when they are consecrated to God and anointed by His Spirit for His purposes. That does not mean every gift becomes a career, but it does mean fulfillment comes when you say, Lord, what I have is Yours, use it for Your glory, and then you steward it diligently, learning, practicing and growing with humility and hard work. To everyone who proves faithful with what he has, more will be given in opportunity and responsibility. To hide what you have because you fear failure leads only to loss.

It also helps to ask what is the master passion of your life. Whatever governs your heart most deeply functions as your god. Scripture says God is jealous for you, not because He is unkind, but because He loves you and knows that if another love or passion sits above Him you will finally come in second and miss what is best for you. He wants to be the master passion, the first love that orders all other loves. Acting can be a good gift to steward, but it becomes healthy only when God remains on the throne of your heart. When He is first, your passion for acting can be guided, purified and sustained, rather than crushing you if success does not come quickly or as you hope.

So do not despise a small beginning and do not hide what you have because you feel your talent does not match your passion. Use what is in your hand today. Be faithful in your studies, keep developing in both music and acting with discipline, seek wise counsel and training, and continually bring your gifts to the Lord in prayer, asking Him to use them as He wills. Faithfulness with little opens the way for more.

May the Lord lead you to Himself as your rock when you feel overwhelmed, give you wisdom for the next step as a student, and teach you to offer your passions and abilities to Him daily so that whatever measure He has entrusted to you may grow for His glory and for your joy. May He be the master passion of your life, and may He guide your path in His perfect timing and way.
