We hear your disappointment and we understand how frustrating it is when plans you were looking forward to are suddenly changed because of someone else's needs with their car and you cannot go to your animal sanctuary this week. We also hear your honesty about your struggle, and we thank you for bringing it into the light instead of hiding it. You have shared that when something goes wrong you often turn to lust as a way of comfort, and you want prayer not to give in this time. That honesty is important before God.
We want to gently but clearly address this, because turning to lust for comfort does not align with God's will for us and will not bring the true comfort your heart is seeking. Lust, whether it is entertaining sexual thoughts, looking at pornography, or engaging in sexual sin outside of marriage, is something God calls us to flee from, not to use as a coping mechanism. The Word tells us in 1 Corinthians 6:18 to flee sexual immorality, and in Matthew 5:28 that even lust in the heart is sin before God. It promises temporary relief but leaves guilt, shame, and greater bondage, and it grieves the Holy Spirit. True comfort only comes from God Himself. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 tells us that God is the Father of mercies and God of all comfort who comforts us in all our affliction. When we seek comfort in the flesh, we are rejecting the comfort He wants to give us.
We also notice that your request says you want to pray but you did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and that our prayers are heard. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And in Acts 4:12 we are told there is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. To be saved and to approach God in prayer, we must put our faith in Jesus Christ, believing He died for our sins and rose again, and confess Him as Lord. It is by His name and His blood that we can boldly come to the throne of grace, find forgiveness for past sins including lust, and receive power to overcome.
We want to encourage you that God has provided a way of escape for every temptation. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says no temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. That way of escape is not willpower alone but fleeing to Christ, calling on Him in the moment, and walking by the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23 reminds us that self-control is a fruit of the Spirit, and 2 Timothy 1:7 says God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.
In this disappointment, God is inviting you to find your comfort in Him rather than in the flesh. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us in nothing to be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, to let our requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard our hearts and our thoughts in Christ Jesus. James 1:14-15 warns us that each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed, then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin, and the sin, when it is full grown, produces death. But James 4:7 also gives us hope to submit therefore to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
We pray together with you now.
Father, we come to You in the name of Jesus Christ, and we thank You for this honest heart that desires to do what is right. We ask for Your forgiveness for times when lust has been chosen as comfort, and we thank You that through the blood of Jesus there is forgiveness and cleansing. Lord, we ask that You comfort our dear friend in this disappointment about not being able to go to the animal sanctuary this week. Help us to trust that You are sovereign over even small disappointments and that You work all things for good for those who love You as Romans 8:28 promises. Fill the place of disappointment with Your presence and Your peace. Holy Spirit, empower us to flee from lust and every form of sexual immorality. When the temptation comes to seek comfort in sin, remind us to run to You, to pray, to open Your Word, to call a trusted Christian brother or sister, to go for a walk, to worship, and to set our minds on things above. Give us strength to take the way of escape You have promised. Create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us. Help us to find our comfort and joy in You alone, and to walk in purity and self-control for Your glory. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.
We encourage you in practical ways this week to guard your heart. Bring the temptation into the light quickly by praying out loud in Jesus name the moment you feel it. Fill your time with the Word, worship music, and wholesome activity, and if possible share your struggle with a mature Christian of the same sex who can pray with you and check in with you. Remember that God sees your desire to honor Him and He is faithful to help you stand. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Draw near to Him this week and He will draw near to you.
