I am too weak, help me lean on Him.

Please pray for me. I am in the greatest depths of severe depression, which I have been enduring for most of my life. For the first time I have been utterly paralyzed by despair for a few nonconsecutive days, unable to leave my bed. Things are bad, too extensive to write here. I have nobody aside from God. Supplicate on my behalf for His strength to lift up my spirit and free my mind from the prison I have built for it. I know too many others that also suffer from debilitating depression in this current time, please pray for them too, so that the joy of God may be with them. Praise to God, who's faith never fails.

We hear the anguish in your heart, and we join you in crying out to the Lord, who is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). Your honesty about the depths of your struggle is not a sign of weakness, but an act of courage, one that God sees and honors. The despair that has left you paralyzed is not the end of your story, for the same God who formed you in your mother’s womb (Jeremiah 1:5) is the One who holds your life in His hands and promises to never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).

We rebuke the spirit of heaviness that has sought to chain your mind and spirit, for the Word declares that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). The prison you feel trapped in is not of His making, and we stand in agreement with you, declaring that the Lord will break every chain and set the captive free (Isaiah 61:1). You are not alone, even when it feels that way. The Lord is your refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). He collects every one of your tears in His bottle (Psalm 56:8) and hears the groanings of your heart when words fail you.

We lift you up before the throne of grace, asking the Father to surround you with His peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Lord, we ask You to strengthen this dear one with Your mighty power, lifting them from the pit of despair and setting their feet upon the rock of Your truth (Psalm 40:2). Father, flood their mind with the light of Your presence, driving out the darkness that has sought to consume them. Renew their strength like the eagle’s (Isaiah 40:31), and let them rise above the waves of this storm, knowing that You are their anchor.

We also pray for all those who, like this precious soul, are battling the weight of depression in this hour. Lord, we ask You to visit them with Your comfort and hope. Let them feel Your nearness in their loneliness, Your peace in their turmoil, and Your joy as their strength (Nehemiah 8:10). Break the chains of isolation that the enemy has used to keep them bound, and remind them that they are seen, known, and deeply loved by You.

We declare over you and all who suffer in this way: The Lord is your light and your salvation, whom shall you fear? The Lord is the stronghold of your life, of whom shall you be afraid? (Psalm 27:1). Though you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you will fear no evil, for He is with you (Psalm 23:4). His love for you is not based on your strength or your ability to endure, but on His faithfulness and the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross.

If you have not already, we encourage you to reach out to a trusted believer or a biblical counselor who can walk alongside you in this season. Depression can make it difficult to see the way forward, but God often works through the hands and feet of His people to bring healing and support. The body of Christ is called to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2), and we are here to do just that for you.

Above all, we remind you that your hope is not in your circumstances or your own strength, but in the name of Jesus Christ. There is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12), and it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. If you have never surrendered your life to Jesus, we invite you to do so now. Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you will be saved (Romans 10:9). He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6), and in Him, you will find the peace and purpose your soul longs for.

We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, who conquered sin and death so that you might live in freedom. May His grace and mercy surround you today and always. Amen.

We are grateful you trusted us with this. To carry severe depression for most of your life, and now to have days where you are paralyzed and unable to leave your bed, is an incredibly heavy burden. We hear how alone you feel apart from God, and how much you want to lean on Him for strength.

What you described about feeling trapped in your mind is something many who live with depression know well. It can make you feel distant from God and from others, even when you are not. The fact that you are still reaching for Him, still asking for prayer for yourself and for others who suffer as you do, tells us His presence is still with you in this hard season, not far off.

When even getting up feels impossible, it helps not to walk through it alone. Alongside our prayers, we gently encourage you to reach out soon to a doctor, counselor, or pastor you trust, and to let one safe person know how these past days have been so they can help you take the next step toward care. If making a call feels like too much right now, ask someone to help you make it.

Father, we lift our friend to You in Jesus' name. You see the weakness and exhaustion and the years of pain. Give strength for today, a little more light in the mind, and the help and companionship needed. Draw near with comfort and steady hope, and be near to each person suffering with depression that our friend carries on their heart. Amen.

Your honest cry has been heard and carried before the throne of grace with much tenderness. To be brought so low as to be paralyzed by despair, unable to leave your bed, feeling your mind to be as a prison, is a sore and heavy affliction. You are not forgotten, though you feel you have nobody beside God. The Lord Himself is near to them that are of a broken heart, and He knows the full extent of what you suffer, even what was too extensive to write.

You have said rightly, I am too weak, help me lean on Him. That is the very posture to which the Scripture calls you. There is one seen coming up from the wilderness leaning upon her beloved, and she leans because she is weak. Conscious strength scorns dependence, but weakness gladly leans. You need not have strength of your own to come to Him. You are to lean your entire weight upon Him, not upon a part of His promise, but upon Himself. He is present and near, and a man does not lean upon a staff which is not in his hand. By faith you may lean upon Christ now, in your weakness, in your perilous way, from the beginning of the day to the end of it.

And this leaning is the way in which strength is renewed. They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. It is not by striving in your own power, nor by imitating the strength of another, but by waiting upon God, by submitting yourself completely and trusting entirely, that He Himself becomes the glory of your strength. The joy of the Lord is your strength. When you have no might, He gives power to the faint, and to them that have no might He increases strength. Do not let your present decline make you conclude that you shall always be so. Your extremity may yet be God's opportunity.

Despair whispers that mercy is spent and that there is no hope, but that whisper dishonors the God who delights in mercy and whose mercy endures forever. The ground of His love is His own love, and all that He bestows upon sinners He gives freely and graciously through Jesus Christ our Lord. He has put the invitation in His Word on purpose for such as you, Return, for I will receive you graciously and love you freely. Look to the bleeding Savior and see there both God's hatred of sin and God's unmeasured love for sinners, and know that no one has a right to perish in despair while such a Savior lives.

We have supplicated on your behalf, and we do so again now.

O Lord God merciful and gracious, look in compassion upon this afflicted one who is weak and sore broken. Lift up his spirit by Your own strength, for he has no strength. Free his mind from the prison in which it is held, and give him to lean wholly upon his Beloved. Renew his strength as he waits upon You, that he may mount up again with wings as eagles. Let the joy of the Lord be his song and his salvation. And hear our prayer also for the many others in this present time who suffer under the same debilitating darkness. Visit them likewise with Your comfort, that the joy of God may be with them. Keep them all, we beseech You, through Jesus Christ, in whom alone is salvation, and to whom be praise for faith that never fails. Amen.

God bless me to know You in truth, fall in love with You with all my heart, mind, soul, body, and strength and never fall out of love with You. God, bless me to have an ever growing closer stronger, more intimate relationship with You.
