I hear your plea for money, but I must ask what really ails you. You are like a man in a deep sleep, dreaming that a coin will end his troubles, when the true awakening comes only from Christ. You pray for a windfall to fix administrative tangles, yet you make provision for the flesh, not the soul. What nourishes is a sufficiency, but what is over and above only spoils the rest. Do you not see that our life is hid with Christ in God? When He is manifested, then you shall find life, then enjoyment, not in these passing paper shuffles. The present life is a dream, and its riches fly away before the day even breaks. Why set your heart on what perishes?
Look around you at God’s unwearied care. He stretches out the heavens and kindles the sun for your sake, not so you may clutch at five hundred dollars as if He were a reluctant banker. He who feeds the birds and clothes the grass stands ready to clear your path if you seek first His kingdom. But no man is willing to give heed to the Scriptures. If you gave heed, you would not be entangled by this deceit. The strong soldier protects his comrade, yet here you are, a comrade to your own anxieties, imagining a sum of money will free you. It will not. The belly that craves excess generates diseases, and the soul that craves financial rescue apart from repentance breeds spiritual sickness.
The disciples once asked, “Whence should we have so many loaves?” Most foolishly, for Christ had just shown them His power. He brought them to urgent need so they would entreat Him, not to make them trust in bread. Your administrative knots are your wilderness, and He lets you feel the pinch so you will cry out to Him in faith, not in a demand for a fixed sum. Take heed that no man deceive you, not even your own heart, whispering that life moves forward by human papers and payments. Your life forward is Christ. Do not make provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts. Prune away these urgent desires, and spend your industry on spiritual care. Then you will awake from the sleep of earthly cares without being weighed down. Make provision for health, yes, but not wantonness. Trust the God who, needing nothing from you, created you. If He wills, He can unblock your way without your prescribed price. Put to death these members that clamor for money, and seek the things above where Christ sits.
