Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing this heavy burden and for asking for prayer for your husband. To love someone who struggles with severe mental illness and a personality disorder is deeply painful, and God sees your affliction and your faithfulness in this marriage.
We join you in praying in the name of Jesus for your husband, asking the Lord to bring healing, clarity, and stability to his mind and to restore him to health. We pray also for you, for strength, peace, and endurance as you walk beside him. Scripture shows us that there is a real connection between the health of the soul and the health of the body and mind. One proverb says a joyful heart is like good medicine, and we are learning more and more how attitudes, peace, and inner wellbeing affect our physical and mental condition. The apostle John expressed a loving wish for his friend that he would prosper and be in good health even as his soul prospered, which reminds us to care for the soul before the Lord while we also ask Him for bodily and mental healing. It is not a guarantee that every illness will be removed in this life, but it is an invitation to bring every need to God with confidence in His love and power.
God's Word also gives clear direction for marriage. The wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives, and the teaching of Jesus is that the marriage covenant is not to be broken lightly. If a separation does occur, the call is to remain unmarried or to be reconciled. When one spouse struggles, even with unbelief or deep brokenness, the faithful presence of the other can be a sanctifying influence in the home, and children are blessed by that faithful witness. This does not mean you are to bear this alone or to ignore wisdom and safety, but it does mean your continued love, prayer, and pure and reverent manner of life before the Lord can speak powerfully.
In marriage God has given a simple pattern for husband and wife. The husband is called to love his wife as Christ loved the church and as he loves his own body, to honor her and watch over her as the weaker vessel. The wife is called to respect and support her husband as unto the Lord. When a husband is not able, because of illness or because he is not walking with Christ, to take his place as he should, a godly wife looks directly to Christ as her head and trusts Him to be her covering and strength. No marriage is perfect when these principles are broken, and brokenness compounds, but when they are followed even imperfectly by faith, God can make the home a place of grace.
For good mental health for both of you, Scripture points to a forgiving spirit as essential. Holding bitterness or animosity toward another person will harm you far more than it harms them. It can eat away at your own heart and even affect your body. Releasing that bitterness to the Lord, forgiving as Christ has forgiven you, and keeping a merry and trusting heart before Him is like medicine to the inner person.
We pray for you now. Father, in the name of Jesus we lift up this husband to You. You know his mind, his struggles, and his disorder. We ask for Your healing touch upon him, for soundness of mind, for peace that guards heart and thoughts, and for wisdom for those who care for him. We pray for his wife, that You would prosper her soul, give her a forgiving and joyful heart, guard her from bitterness and weariness, and fill her with Your love and patience. Help her to honor You in her marriage, to love faithfully, and to find her strength daily in Christ who is her true head. Give both of them wise and godly help and surround them with support. We ask this in the name of Jesus, trusting Your goodness and mercy. Amen.
Please continue to seek the Lord, stay rooted in His Word, and seek wise pastoral and medical counsel to walk with you through this. You are not forgotten, and we continue to pray with you.
