The peace your husband seeks at the bottom of a bottle is a peace that must be disturbed, for it is the peace of forgetfulness, not the peace of God. If a man has to forget God before he has peace, that fact betrays a fatal secret. Such peace is false peace, a mere writing on the sand, and what true man will solace himself with that which is false? The Lord knows the turmoil of his mind and the wounds inflicted by his family, yet the mass of mankind forget God and live as if they had no God at all. Let him not be among them. His very trouble is a voice calling him to seek the Lord, for if on remembering God he is troubled, it proves his soul is not yet reconciled to its Maker.
There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked, but there is a God of peace who restores it. He is the God of peace because He justifies, and thereby implants peace in the soul. He accepted Christ, and as the God of peace, He brought Him again from the dead. Before your husband can enjoy peace within his heart, there must be a state of peace established between him and God. He must submit himself to the Lord, and God must forgive the past and make with him a Covenant of peace. This peace, real peace, the peace of God, must spring out of his being justified by faith. We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. O taste and see that the peace of God is good! It surpasses all the tongues of men and of angels to set it forth. If God his Father rules all things for his good, ought he not to be at peace?
But let him cease his vain seeking in the broken cisterns of the creature. The seeking sinner often goes about here and there seeking, but he declines trusting. He is looking abroad for that which is at home, seeking for peace afar off when it is near him in Christ. Tell him to tarry no longer in his own resolutions and failures. When he resolves and then falls, he despairs, yet God knows how he has resolved and how he has stumbled. Let him not think his sin is too great, for the text does not exclude him from seeking God. If sin has perverted his judgments, yet seek the great Creator and Preserver! He shall find Him. God comes in with His grace where the impossible shuts us out. Cease your seeking as a distant, anxious toil; there is the Man whom you seek, Christ Jesus, who stands revealed. Trust Him and you shall have peace at once.
Pray that the Eternal Spirit may show him the wisdom of seeking God by Jesus Christ, and of seeking Him now. O Israel, return unto the LORD your God, for He is still your God. May the God of Peace make him holy, for He Himself is peace and holiness. Glorify Him who is at peace with all His believing ones today. On Jesus’ bosom nothing but calm is found. Jesus has vanquished death and all its powers, and He can still this inward tempest with a word.
