We hear the burden on your heart for your husband and for your marriage, and we join with you in bringing him before the Lord together in Jesus' name. We know God honors marriage as a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and He desires that it be a place of love, peace, and holiness. Your desire to see your husband freed from drinking and anger is a godly desire that aligns with the Lord's will for him and for your home.
Scripture speaks clearly about both of these struggles. The Word says, Don't be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, Ephesians 5:18 and Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise, Proverbs 20:1. Drunkenness is not a small failing but is listed among the works of the flesh that keep a person from walking in the Spirit, Galatians 5:21, and those who live in such a way without repentance will not inherit God's Kingdom, 1 Corinthians 6:10. In the same way, uncontrolled anger does not accomplish God's purposes. The Word tells us, Be angry, and don't sin. Don't let the sun go down on your wrath, neither give place to the devil, Ephesians 4:26-27 and Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for the anger of man doesn't produce the righteousness of God, James 1:19-20. We also hear the Lord's direct command to husbands, Husbands, love your wives, and don't be bitter against them, Colossians 3:19. We must lovingly rebuke both drunkenness and harsh, angry behavior, as they wound your marriage, harm his own soul, and grieve the Holy Spirit, and we pray your husband will come to see them as sin to be repented of, not habits to be excused.
We encourage you to continue to pray fervently for him while also walking in wisdom. Pray that God will convict him deeply and give him a desire for sobriety and self-control, which is fruit of the Spirit, Galatians 5:23. Encourage him, when he is sober and calm, to seek help from a pastor or godly men in the church for accountability and counsel, and to turn to the Lord for strength rather than to alcohol. As his wife, continue to show respect and love as you are able, speaking truth in love and not returning anger for anger, yet also setting clear and biblical boundaries. If his temper ever threatens your safety or becomes abusive, please seek immediate help from trusted pastoral counsel and safe family or authorities, for the Lord does not call you to endure harm in silence. Remember the promise that The Lord is near to all those who call on him, to all who call on him in truth, Psalm 145:18.
We notice your request mentions Lord but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6 and There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. It is by placing our faith in Jesus Christ, His death on the cross for our sins and His resurrection, that we are forgiven and made able to come boldly before God in prayer.
We pray together now for you both.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, lifting up this dear sister and her husband to Your throne of grace. Lord, we ask that You convict her husband of his sin in drinking and in anger, that You would break the chains of alcohol in his life and set him free. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit instead, and give him a new heart that desires righteousness, gentleness, and self-control. Help him to love his wife as Christ loved the church, with patience and kindness, and to put away all bitterness and wrath. Lord, protect this wife, give her strength, peace, and wisdom beyond her own, and guard her heart from fear and discouragement. Help her to keep praying without ceasing and to find wise, godly support around her. Restore peace to this marriage and make it a testimony of Your redeeming power. We ask that both husband and wife would draw closer to Jesus and be saved and sanctified through Him. We trust Your will and Your power to heal and restore, and we ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.
