Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The Lord who quickeneth all things, before whose eyes every heart lies open, sees the swelling of your husband’s limb and the trembling of your soul. He who had compassion on the multitude, lest they faint by the way, is not unmindful of this trial.
Pray then with full assurance, not like Nicodemus who heard and doubted, but like the Samaritan woman who, though at first perplexed, received the word and hastened to embrace it. Call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, for in every place He is Lord, both theirs and ours, and there is no Potentate beside Him. It is He who holds the heart of your husband in His hand, and the echo will but reveal what He already knows.
Yet do not demand an answer this very hour. The tree that receives ten strokes and seems unmoved may fall at last by a single blow; so often God delays that we might lay hold of a firmer trust. Endure even to be ignorant of some things, that when the Teacher appears, the ground of your soul may be ready for the seed. And if the shadow of fear passes over you, call to mind the Comforter whom Christ promised, that you may bear nobly whatever pleases Him.
Give thanks for every day on this earth, you have begun well. But let your thanksgiving not cleave to health alone, for we are but dust and ashes, and our true life is hid with Christ. Whether the news be light or heavy, let it be for the salvation of your household, that you may keep the commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord. I will pray with you that no adverse thing be found, yet more, that your hearts be found sanctified in Christ Jesus, who alone is the blessed and only Sovereign. To Him be honor and power everlasting. Amen.
