Husband - drinking

Humble Servant of All
Lord please help my ### to stop drinking. It's getting worse. He drinks when I am at Church. Please bring him back to YOU, and make him come to church. Please transform him.

We hear the burden on your heart for your husband and for your marriage, and we stand with you in prayer for his deliverance and restoration. We honor your faithfulness to continue going to church and to intercede for him, for God ordained marriage as a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and His desire is to see that covenant strengthened and made holy. Your commitment to pray for your husband instead of turning away is pleasing to the Lord.

Scripture is very clear that drunkenness is not a small struggle but sin that harms the person, the marriage, and the relationship with God. Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise. Proverbs 20:1. And we are commanded Don't be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit. Ephesians 5:18. We also read that nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor extortionists, will inherit God's Kingdom. 1 Corinthians 6:10. This is why we must rebuke this pattern of drinking in your husband's life, not to condemn him, but because we love him and want to see him free. The enemy seeks to use alcohol to steal his health, his witness, and his place in your home, and the fact that he drinks especially when you are at church suggests his heart is running from the very place where conviction and help can be found.

Yet we serve a God who transforms lives. Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17. What you are asking for is not just behavior modification but a new heart, and only Jesus can do that. We cannot make your husband come to church, for God desires a willing heart, but we can pray that the Holy Spirit draws him and convicts him so that he chooses to come.

We noticed you cried out to the Lord, and we gently want to remind you that it is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father and that we are saved. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. When we pray in Jesus' name we are coming by the blood He shed for our sins and claiming His power to save and deliver. If your husband has not yet truly believed on Jesus as Lord and Savior, his greatest need is salvation, for only then will he have the power to overcome this bondage.

We encourage you to continue in faithful prayer, for the insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective. James 5:16. Continue to be a godly example in your home. In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; so that, even if any don't obey the Word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives. 1 Peter 3:1. This does not mean you should enable his drinking or ignore sin in the home, but that your quiet strength, your love, your refusal to nag and your consistent walk with Christ can be a powerful witness. Seek wisdom from your pastor and from mature believers in your church for support and accountability, and set loving but firm boundaries that do not make it easy for him to continue in drunkenness while you are away worshiping.

We pray together with you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we thank You that we can come boldly to Your throne through His blood. We lift this husband to You and ask for Your mercy and deliverance upon him. Lord, convict him of his sin of drunkenness, open his eyes to see how this is destroying his body, his marriage, and his soul, and grant him godly sorrow that leads to repentance. Break the chains of alcohol that bind him and fill him instead with Your Holy Spirit. Transform his mind and make him a new creation in Christ. Draw him back to Yourself and give him a hunger for Your Word and for fellowship with Your people. Put in his heart a desire to join his wife in church, to worship You together, and to lead his home in righteousness. Strengthen this wife, give her endurance, peace, and wisdom to walk in love and truth, and protect her from discouragement. Guard this marriage and make it a testimony of Your restoring power. We ask all of this in Jesus' name, believing You are able to do far more than we ask or think. Amen.

We hear how heavy this has been for you, watching your husband drink more and feeling alone with it while you are at church. We hear your love for him and your deep longing for him to turn back to the Lord and for your home to know peace again.

It is such a burden to try to carry his drinking for him. In our experience, trying to directly control or fix a loved one's drinking often leaves a spouse exhausted and can even create more tension at home. We cannot change him for him, but we can keep loving him, praying faithfully, and getting steady support for ourselves as we walk this road.

It may help to not carry this by yourself. If there is a pastor or a trusted, mature person at church you feel safe with, consider quietly letting them know what is happening so you have someone to pray with and to help you think through wise next steps and healthy boundaries. Many wives in a similar place have also found strength meeting with others who understand what it is like to love someone who drinks, like a support group for families. Alongside prayer, if he becomes willing, gently encouraging him toward professional help, a doctor, counselor, or recovery support, can give him care that goes beyond what love alone can do.

Father, we lift this husband to You and ask You to draw him to Yourself, to work in his heart and bring freedom from drinking. Give his wife wisdom for each conversation, strength for each day, and people around her who will walk with her. Guide their home and keep them safe. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your prayer has been heard, and we join our hearts with yours before the throne of grace for your husband. To see one so near to you taken captive by drink, and that even while you seek the Lord in His house, is a deep and piercing sorrow. Yet you have done well to spread this grief before the Lord, for His ear is not shut to the cry of His people, and His arm is still mighty to save.

Know this, that deliverance from sin is solely by the power of God. It is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy. He alone brought forth His people of old with silver and gold, and He alone can bring your husband forth from this bondage. What you cannot do, He can do, and what your persuasion cannot effect, His grace can accomplish. There is a higher restoration than recovery from outward habit, even the deliverance of the soul from the pit. The word of the Lord is, Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom. That ransom is the precious blood of Jesus Christ, and nobody would have thought of that way of deliverance if God had not thought of it Himself. If your husband is to be saved from sin in every form, it must be through that ransom, and through the power of Him who alone delivers from the power of darkness.

We also remember ###. He was down, but he was soon up again through a look from the Lord. That look severed ### from the crowd and broke his heart into repentance. So one look from Jesus, one gracious visitation of the Spirit, can do what years of striving cannot. Pray then that the Lord would give your husband such a look, that he would be cut to the heart, and restored to walk again in the way of life. The same God who is a faithful Husband to His people, who communes with them in love and provides for them with tender care, is able to make an earthly husband faithful again to his vows and to his God. Marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, ordained by God, and He delights to see it kept in holiness and love.

Continue, therefore, to wait upon the Lord. Do not cease to come to His house, for there you receive strength, and there your testimony is kept alive. The believer after affliction can say, The Lord has chastened me sorely, but I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Your present trial may yet become your song of deliverance, when you shall have a far richer theme for music than any earthly victory, even salvation from worse enemies by a greater Saviour.

Let us pray together. O Lord our God, who has found a ransom and who alone can deliver from the pit, look in mercy upon this husband. Break the power of strong drink that holds him, and break the power of sin that holds his heart from Thee. Grant him repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, wash him in the blood of the Lamb, and make him a new creature. Turn his feet from the tavern to Thy house, from darkness to light, from the power of Satan unto God. Restore him to Thyself, restore him to his wife in love and sobriety, and let his life henceforth declare Thy works. Do this, we beseech Thee, for Thy mercy and Thy glory, and let Thy free grace have all the praise. Amen.
