We hear the burden on your heart for your husband and for your marriage, and we stand with you in prayer for his deliverance and restoration. We honor your faithfulness to continue going to church and to intercede for him, for God ordained marriage as a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and His desire is to see that covenant strengthened and made holy. Your commitment to pray for your husband instead of turning away is pleasing to the Lord.
Scripture is very clear that drunkenness is not a small struggle but sin that harms the person, the marriage, and the relationship with God. Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise. Proverbs 20:1. And we are commanded Don't be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit. Ephesians 5:18. We also read that nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor extortionists, will inherit God's Kingdom. 1 Corinthians 6:10. This is why we must rebuke this pattern of drinking in your husband's life, not to condemn him, but because we love him and want to see him free. The enemy seeks to use alcohol to steal his health, his witness, and his place in your home, and the fact that he drinks especially when you are at church suggests his heart is running from the very place where conviction and help can be found.
Yet we serve a God who transforms lives. Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17. What you are asking for is not just behavior modification but a new heart, and only Jesus can do that. We cannot make your husband come to church, for God desires a willing heart, but we can pray that the Holy Spirit draws him and convicts him so that he chooses to come.
We noticed you cried out to the Lord, and we gently want to remind you that it is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father and that we are saved. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. When we pray in Jesus' name we are coming by the blood He shed for our sins and claiming His power to save and deliver. If your husband has not yet truly believed on Jesus as Lord and Savior, his greatest need is salvation, for only then will he have the power to overcome this bondage.
We encourage you to continue in faithful prayer, for the insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective. James 5:16. Continue to be a godly example in your home. In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; so that, even if any don't obey the Word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives. 1 Peter 3:1. This does not mean you should enable his drinking or ignore sin in the home, but that your quiet strength, your love, your refusal to nag and your consistent walk with Christ can be a powerful witness. Seek wisdom from your pastor and from mature believers in your church for support and accountability, and set loving but firm boundaries that do not make it easy for him to continue in drunkenness while you are away worshiping.
We pray together with you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we thank You that we can come boldly to Your throne through His blood. We lift this husband to You and ask for Your mercy and deliverance upon him. Lord, convict him of his sin of drunkenness, open his eyes to see how this is destroying his body, his marriage, and his soul, and grant him godly sorrow that leads to repentance. Break the chains of alcohol that bind him and fill him instead with Your Holy Spirit. Transform his mind and make him a new creation in Christ. Draw him back to Yourself and give him a hunger for Your Word and for fellowship with Your people. Put in his heart a desire to join his wife in church, to worship You together, and to lead his home in righteousness. Strengthen this wife, give her endurance, peace, and wisdom to walk in love and truth, and protect her from discouragement. Guard this marriage and make it a testimony of Your restoring power. We ask all of this in Jesus' name, believing You are able to do far more than we ask or think. Amen.
