Husband - drink and family

Animalgirl

Humble Servant of All
Lord please remove drinking from my husband's life and help him to realise he can have more fun going out with his family instead of drinking and going to bed.

We join with you in lifting up your husband and your marriage before the Lord and we understand the burden you carry seeing drinking take time and joy away from your family.

The Scriptures warn us clearly about drinking to excess, for wine can take hold of a heart and lead a man away from his responsibilities. Proverbs 20:1 says Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise. And Ephesians 5:18 says Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit. We know that drunkenness is not God's will for your husband, and it grieves us when it robs a family of fellowship and love. God calls a husband to love his wife as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for her, Ephesians 5:25, and to lead his household in sobriety and love, choosing as Joshua did, But as for me and my house, we will serve Yahweh, Joshua 24:15.

We also want to gently encourage you that we come to the Father only through Jesus Christ. You cried out to Lord, and we rejoice that you are seeking Him, yet we want to remind you that Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6, and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. It is by trusting in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection for our sins, that our prayers are heard and our homes are restored. If your husband does not yet know Jesus as Savior, his greatest need is salvation, which alone can break the power of sin and give a new heart.

We pray for your husband's deliverance and for your family to be drawn closer together in godly joy.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear wife and her husband and their family. Lord, You see the pain that drinking has caused and the evenings lost to it instead of to fellowship with his wife and children. We ask that You convict his heart by Your Holy Spirit, that You remove the desire for drink and replace it with a hunger for You and for his family. Help him to be sober minded and self controlled as You command, 1 Peter 5:8, and to find true joy not in wine but in being filled with Your Spirit. Lord, restore to him the delight of being with his family, of laughing and going out together and leading his home in love. We pray that You would heal this marriage and make it a testimony of Your grace, that children would see their father walking faithfully before You, for Behold, children are a heritage of Yahweh, Psalm 127:3. Give this wife strength, patience, and grace to love her husband with a gentle and quiet spirit, that she may win him without a word by her godly conduct, 1 Peter 3:1-2, and give her wisdom not to nag but to speak the truth in love and to seek wise godly counsel in her church. Lord, make a way of escape from every temptation, for You have promised No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it, 1 Corinthians 10:13. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to continue steadfast in prayer, for The effective, earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results, James 5:16. Keep praying and keep loving your husband while holding fast to what is right. Do not enable the drinking, but encourage him toward sobriety, fellowship with other believing men, and accountability in the local church. Invite him warmly to choose family time, plan simple outings together that build joyful memories, and let him see the fun and peace that comes from a home centered on Christ. If the drinking is habitual or heavy, encourage him with grace to seek help from a pastor or biblical counselor. Trust that God is able to deliver and to restore, and that He desires your marriage to reflect His faithfulness as a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman for His glory.

We hear the ache in your prayer, wanting your husband present with you and your family instead of turning to drink and then withdrawing to sleep. That loneliness in your own home is heavy, and it makes sense you are asking God to lift this burden.

We love your hope that he would find real joy with his family. That desire for togetherness is good and worth holding onto. We have also learned that drinking is rarely just about having fun, it often becomes a way to escape stress or pain, so simply inviting him to something more enjoyable, while important, may not be enough on its own to break the pattern. It usually takes steady support from more than one direction.

One gentle next step that helps many spouses is to find one safe, steady support for yourself as you walk this out, whether a pastor, a trusted counselor, or a family support group like Celebrate Recovery or an Al-Anon family group. Having someone to talk honestly with can help you sort out loving boundaries, what to say when he is sober and calm, and how to care for your own heart while you continue to love him well. If his drinking is affecting his health or safety, it is also wise to encourage him to talk with his doctor or a counselor alongside prayer.

Father, we bring this husband and his family to You in Jesus' name. Please draw near to this wife in her weariness and give her wisdom, peace and strength for each day. Work in her husband's heart to loosen the hold of alcohol and awaken a desire for life with his family. Guide them to the right help and surround this home with Your care and protection. Amen.

Your burden concerning your husband has been brought before the Lord, and it is a right and holy grief that you feel when drink steals away the husband and father whom God has joined to your home. The Lord has not shut His ear to such a cry. Though you may have feared that your prayers were spread to the pitiless sea, be assured that He who is Husband to His people in faithfulness and tender love hears the prayer offered in secret and will in His own time make deliverance effectual.

We would have you remember that deliverance from the power of sin is as much the work of God as deliverance from the guilt of sin. It is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy. No resolve of man alone can break the chain of strong drink, but our God has found a ransom. He has invented the way of deliverance through the precious blood of His Son, and He has said, I have found a ransom. There is hope then even for the most entangled, for what man cannot do, the Lord Jesus Christ can do, who delivers us from the power of darkness and translates us into His kingdom.

It is a glorious thing to have a well in the family where, in prayer with the children, you can bring all the necessities of the household before God, and mention each child if you will, and all the troubles of the past and all the expected difficulties of the coming day. Keep that well open. Bring your husband by name before the Lord daily. Plead that the Lord would give him to see that true joy is not in the cup which bites at last, but in the love of his own home and in walking before God with his family. Pray that the Lord would grant him that look which Peter received, a look from Christ that severed him from the crowd and broke his heart and then restored him, so that he who was down was soon up again.

Take comfort also that affliction has its purpose, and after deliverance the believer has something to declare. If the Lord is pleased to lift this cloud, you shall yet live to declare the works of the Lord and tell to others how you stayed as at the brook Jabbok in fear and trembling, and how God met you with mercy. Till then, cast your care upon Him who is your Husband and your Head and who will not forget nor forsake His own.

We join our prayers with yours to this end.

O Lord God, who alone can bring forth Thy people with a mighty hand, look in mercy upon this household. Forgive sin and break its power in this husband. Take away the love of strong drink and give in its place a love for Thee and for his family. Let him find his delight at his own table and by his own hearth, and make him a sober and tender head of his home. For Thy glory and for the good of this family, work deliverance by Thy free grace, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is our ransom. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Watching someone you love trade evenings with family for the bottle is its own kind of grief. There's a short spoken prayer called the Addiction Clearing Prayer on the One Prayer at a Time YouTube channel, a few calm minutes prayed over loosening addiction's hold, if you'd like something quiet to listen to. I hope ### finds his way back to the table.
