The question of how the devil performs miracles is a profound one, rooted in Scripture and the spiritual battle that rages unseen around us. We know that God is the ultimate source of all power, and nothing occurs outside His sovereign will. Yet, the Bible clearly shows that Satan and his agents can perform signs and wonders that mimic the works of God, at least temporarily. This is not because the devil possesses creative power like the Lord, but because he twists, deceives, and manipulates within the bounds God allows for His greater purposes.
In Exodus 7, when Moses and Aaron performed miracles before Pharaoh, the Egyptian magicians were able to replicate some of them—turning their staffs into serpents and turning water into blood. However, their power was limited. They could not undo what Moses did, nor could they replicate the more profound miracles, like the plague of gnats. This reveals a critical truth: Satan’s power is derivative and constrained. He cannot create; he can only counterfeit. The magicians’ abilities came from demonic influence, not from their own strength or from God. As it is written in 2 Thessalonians 2:9, "The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie."
The false prophet in Revelation 13 is another example of this deception. He performs great wonders, even calling down fire from heaven, to lead people astray. This is a direct imitation of Elijah’s miracle on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18), where God sent fire from heaven to consume the sacrifice. The devil’s goal is not to glorify God but to deceive humanity into worshiping the Antichrist. Jesus warned us in Matthew 24:24, "For false christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect." This underscores the importance of discernment—testing every spirit and every miracle against the truth of God’s Word.
Satan’s power is real, but it is not infinite. He is a created being, subject to God’s authority. In Job 1, we see that Satan could not touch Job without God’s permission. Similarly, in Luke 22:31, Jesus tells Peter that Satan has asked to sift him like wheat, but even in that, God’s purposes prevail. The devil’s miracles are ultimately tools of deception, designed to lead people away from the truth of the Gospel. They may appear impressive, but they lack the redemptive, life-giving power of God’s true miracles.
We must also remember that not every supernatural event is from God. Deuteronomy 13:1-3 warns, "If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a sign or wonder, and if the sign or wonder spoken of takes place, and the prophet says, ‘Let us follow other gods’ (gods you have not known) ‘and let us worship them,’ you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer." Even if a miracle occurs, if it leads people away from the one true God, it is a deception.
So how do we discern the source of miracles? First, we must measure them against Scripture. God’s Word is our ultimate authority, and no true miracle from God will contradict it. Second, we must examine the fruit of the miracle. Does it bring glory to God, or does it exalt a person or a false god? Does it lead people to repentance and faith in Christ, or does it lead them into sin and idolatry? Jesus said in Matthew 7:16, "By their fruit you will recognize them." Third, we must pray for discernment. The Holy Spirit is our guide, and He will lead us into all truth (John 16:13).
Let us pray together now, seeking God’s wisdom and protection against deception:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in awe of Your power and sovereignty. You alone are the Creator and Sustainer of all things, and every good and perfect gift comes from You. Lord, we acknowledge that the devil seeks to deceive and lead people astray with counterfeit miracles and signs. We ask for Your discernment and wisdom to recognize the truth and to stand firm in Your Word. Protect us from the schemes of the enemy, and help us to test every spirit against the truth of Scripture. Father, we pray for those who are deceived by false wonders, that their eyes would be opened to the truth of the Gospel. May they come to know You as their Savior and Lord, and may they be set free from the lies of the evil one. We thank You for the victory we have in Christ Jesus, who has already overcome the world. Strengthen our faith, Lord, and help us to walk in the light of Your truth. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
Brothers and sisters, let us remain vigilant and grounded in God’s Word. The devil may perform miracles, but they are nothing compared to the power of our risen Savior. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, and may we never be swayed by the deceptions of the enemy. Stand firm in the truth, and remember that greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).
