Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The house of this present life is but a tabernacle, a tent so easily taken down, and you are feeling its stakes being pulled from the ground. You ask God to work something out for you, and rightly so, but consider what He has already worked out. We know that if this earthly house of our tabernacle is dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. The cancellation you fear is but the dissolution of a temporary shelter. Your true house abides forever with God, and this very trial is meant to arouse your zeal toward it. Do not be found naked, clinging only to what is perishing, but put on that full assurance of faith in His promise.
You also plead for strength and energy, and here is the hidden fountain of both. It is in mourning, in anguish, that the soul is braced up and grows sober, delivered from the whole swarm of passions, and becomes higher and stronger. When David was in anguish, he was to be admired; when the people groaned and called upon God, they were heard. This very weight you feel is not meant to crush you, but to press you down into the soil that you might finally receive the seed of His word and bear fruit. The ground of our heart is hard, and it takes many such sowings of trial for the truth to take root and remain uninjured.
Do not let today’s difficulty present itself as a barrier, as if God has abandoned you. The fact that trials come even to the faithful requires you to demonstrate your own resolve, for now you have the power to walk not after the flesh. You say you love Him, and so like that woman with great shamelessness you are right to press near. He will respect a confidence that knows He is Lord over all things. Look not to how the times seem perilous, for the evil is not in the days but in the neglect of men. Turn your care now to your true self and your true house. The storm that threatens to destroy one shelter is sent to fix your eyes upon the eternal one, and there you will find a strength that no earthly policy can cancel.
