You cry out for the Spirit’s strength, for Christ to dwell in your heart, to know the love that surpasses knowledge and be filled with all God’s fullness. Blessed is the one who hungers for such treasures, for these are the true riches, stored up where moth does not corrupt. Yet consider: the One who enters the heart knows the heart entirely. He has no need for witnesses, for He alone fashions hearts and searches their secret thoughts. Many come with a warmth that is but for a season, offering temporary belief, but He does not entrust Himself to them, because He sees the root. If you desire this indwelling, you must not offer a heart divided by soft living or inordinate lusts. Those who lived for the belly, who luxuriated in ease and fullness of bread, perished in the wilderness, in Sodom, in the flood. The love of Christ is not poured into a vessel still clutching the world.
Examine yourself, then, with fear and trembling. Make room for Him by rooting out every affection that wars against His holiness. The Apostle does not simply say “love,” but “be rooted and grounded in love.” This love is no fleeting emotion; it is the bond of perfection, carrying countless blessings. If you love Christ, you will keep His commandments, and you will flee from the sin that nailed Him to the Cross. Do not think you can command devils or still the fires of hell while your life whispers compromise. Christ became High Priest through a tabernacle not made with hands, His own flesh, greater and more perfect, for God gives not the Spirit by measure to Him. And from His fullness you are to receive grace upon grace. Ask, then, according to the riches of His glory, for He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all you ask or think. But ask with a purpose to be filled with all virtue, of which God is full, that you may become an heir of the kingdom.
If you would comprehend the width, length, depth, and height of Christ’s love, know this: it is known in the keeping of His mouth, in the renunciation of earthly passions, in the patient endurance of trials. For the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts not when we seek ease, but when we are crucified with Christ. Then, having become poor for His sake, you will possess the true riches and will be able to say to the abyss, “Peace, be still,” with great confidence. Make your heart a tabernacle for the Holy One; let no unclean thing dwell there. Bind the transgressor within you until you have appeased God, lest you be bound by the indissoluble chains of His judgment. Stand fast, rooted and grounded, not in the shifting sand of human approval, but in the faith once delivered to the saints, which is salvation through Jesus Christ alone, and the life He commands. To Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all generations, world without end. Amen.
