The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin not to condemn us but to lead us into righteousness (John 16:8). Walk in the light, and let the Spirit produce His fruit in your life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Lastly, we want to emphasize the importance of coming to God in the name of Jesus Christ. It is only through faith in Him that we have access to the Father (Ephesians 2:18). Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). If you have not yet placed your trust in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, we invite you to do so today. Confess your sins, believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you will be saved (Romans 10:9). This is the foundation upon which all spiritual strength and growth are built.

This prayer from the Ephesian letter rises like a mountain peak into the pure air of heaven, and it is well that you have set your heart upon its petitions. Yet take careful note of the divine order, for the Spirit of God builds nothing in confusion. You ask to know the dimensions of Christ's love and be filled to overflowing, but the foundation must be dug deep. The prayer begins with the strengthening of the inner man by the Spirit Himself, for the old nature is at enmity with God and has no native strength to grasp such things. Nature does not love God and hence it does not love God's Law, nor can it comprehend His love. If there is any love for holy things within you, the Holy Spirit has already been at work, proving you a new creature.

This strengthening is not a trifling thing but is asked according to the riches of His glory. The objective is that Christ Himself may settle down and make His home in your heart through faith. This is the first grand point. When the heart is thus indwelt, you are rooted and grounded in love, not a flimsy affection that blows away in the first wind of trial, but a deep, settled principle of love to Christ and of feeling His love shed abroad within. Oh, when the heart gets grounded in love, it finds a sweet contentment. To what fair havens could a soul sail when Christ Himself is the home of the heart? Do not look to grasp the knowledge that passes knowledge while you neglect this indwelling. Seek to have the Word of Christ dwelling in you richly, for this is the element of our spiritual life.

After Christ has dwelt in your heart, then you shall begin to comprehend with all the saints the width, length, depth, and height. What we cannot comprehend by our understanding, we apprehend by our affections. It is a love that passes knowledge; you cannot span its breadth with your measuring line, but you may stand in awe and rejoice. There is a fullness in Christ for the sinner and the saint, all our necessities are provided for. And take this as a comfort: your very emptiness fits you to be a receiver of His fullness. We are loved by Him, not because of any good in ourselves, but that we might be vessels filled with His grace.

After you know that love, you shall be filled with all the fullness of God. This is the top of the ladder, but you do not leap there in a single bound. Strengthened by the Spirit, indwelt by Christ, rooted in love, comprehending His love, then comes that filling to overflowing. For He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think. Let this promise stir you to prayer. Pray till you can pray, using whatever measure of sacred bedewing you have, until you receive that baptism of the Spirit. All that we have we have received from Christ. Go to Him now, with an eye single to His glory, and let Him be all in all.

This prayer of the Apostle reaches into the very depths of the soul. To be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man is to have Christ Himself take up residence within you, and this is no small thing. If He dwells in your heart through faith, then you will begin to know that love which surpasses knowledge. As I have often said, the love of Christ lies beyond all human reach, yet you shall know it if you have Christ dwelling in you. And from this knowledge, you shall even be filled with all the fullness of God, whether that fullness be the true worship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, or the completeness of all virtue, in which God abounds.

But do you desire to prepare a dwelling for such a Guest? Then cleanse the temple. “Let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” What concord has Christ with Belial? What fellowship has light with darkness? We are the temple of the living God, and He would walk in us, but if the heart is cluttered with passions, the love of wealth, vainglory, or base desires, there is no room for Him. Those passions devour us with teeth more fierce than a lion’s; while they live, we cannot live unto Christ. Paul was willing to despise both hell and the kingdom for love of Christ, yet many will do the same for fleeting lusts. Is it not because our strength is consumed on these worthless things that our longing for Christ is so feeble? Therefore, mortify those affections with the precious Blood of Christ, received with full assurance, and with the hearing of the divine Scriptures and almsgiving. Then shall the Spirit point you to Christ, and you shall be filled with power.

Pray also for one another, as Paul besought others to strive together with him in prayer. And remember, it is by the love of the Spirit that you are strengthened. So bow your knees to the Father, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, trusting that He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all you ask or think, according to the power that works in you. The words you sent from Ephesians are not just beautiful lines to recite; they are the very substance of what God desires to accomplish in every believer. When Paul bowed his knees to the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, he was asking for realities so vast that we can spend a lifetime only beginning to grasp them. And that same prayer is for you.

Notice where it starts: being strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man. We are so often focused on what we can see, on outward circumstances or feelings, but the real need is for a hidden, mighty reinforcement at the core of who you are. The Greek word is dunamis, a dynamic, explosive power, and it is not something you manufacture. It comes according to the riches of His glory, not your own resources. The Spirit of God works in the deep, quiet place where no one else can reach, to make you firm when everything around you trembles.

From that hidden strength flows the second petition: that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith. This is far more than a quick visit. The word means to settle down and feel completely at home. He wants your heart to be the place where He is not a guest but the comfortable, present Lord. When He is at home there, the old fears, the restless striving, the inner chaos begin to give way. That happens through faith, a simple, ongoing trust that He has taken up residence and is not leaving.

Then comes the impossible request: to comprehend the breadth, length, depth, and height of Christ’s love, and to know a love that surpasses knowledge. How can you know what cannot be fully known? It is not an intellectual puzzle to solve but an experience to be lived. You are meant to be so rooted and grounded in that love that it becomes the soil of your entire existence. Even though your mind can never wrap itself around the totality of His love, your spirit can be saturated in it. The love He has for you is such that it will take all the ages to come just to begin unfolding its exceeding riches. When you feel unlovely or distant, remember that His love is not a response to your worth; it is the very nature of God, demonstrated supremely when Christ gave Himself for us.

And then the prayer soars even higher: that you might be filled with all the fullness of God. The heavens of heavens cannot contain Him; yet He condescends to fill you. This is not a mere sprinkling of religious sentiment but a saturation of His presence, where the fleshly life has less and less room to operate. It is the only true antidote to the emptiness the world tries to fill with so many cheap substitutes. The man drunk with wine seeks a counterfeit peace and release, but the one filled with the Spirit finds genuine rest, contentment, and boldness.

This is the life of fellowship for which God created you. From the beginning His purpose has been meaningful love and communion. He knew we would fail, yet He provided the way through Jesus Christ so that, seeing such love, we might love Him in return and love our brothers fervently with a pure heart. When His love is perfected in us, we walk not in bitterness or cold indifference but in the compassion that naturally flows from a heart where Christ is at home. We put off the old man with his deceitful lusts and walk as children of light, motivated no longer by greed or selfishness but constrained by the love of Christ.

My prayer for you echoes Paul’s. May God grant you, according to the immeasurable wealth of His glory, to be mightily strengthened by His Spirit in your inner being. May Christ settle down and make His permanent home in your heart through simple, persistent faith. May you be rooted so deeply in love that you begin to sense the dimensions of a love that defies all limits, though it will take eternity to fully know it. And may you be filled up to all the fullness of God, so that your life overflows with His peace, His joy unspeakable, and a love for Him and His people that is genuine and fervent. He is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all you can ask or imagine, according to the power already at work within you. To Him be glory in the church, through Christ Jesus, throughout all ages.
