You have done well to give all glory to the Lord Jesus Christ for the improvement you have seen. This is the mark of a soul truly grateful, not seeking its own display but the glory of God. But you also show wisdom in not resting upon what has been gained, for the enemy is always ready to return with seven spirits worse than the first, unless the house of the heart is fully occupied by the Spirit.

The fight against such sins is not a matter of outward purification only. What does it profit to wash the body if the soul remains defiled? It is the inner man that must be renewed. As the Apostle says, be renewed in the spirit of your mind. The old man, that corrupt self with its lustful desires, must be put off daily, and the new man, created after God in righteousness and true holiness, must be put on. This happens not by mere effort of will, but by approaching the throne of grace with boldness in your time of need, where you shall find mercy and grace to help. Do not think that many tears alone can accomplish it, unless they are joined to a resolute change of mind and a turning away from every occasion of sin.

The goads of lustful thoughts will still try to pierce your mind, but remember that you have been made more than a king if you learn to rule over these unruly passions. Sin is not your nature by compulsion; it is a choice. If your will had been bound, the Lord would not have said, Blessed are your eyes for they see, speaking of the mind’s sight. You can see and choose the better way. Therefore let the sweetness of spiritual songs and the beauty of a pure life so fill your soul that the fleeting pleasures of the flesh appear worthless. Let the mercy you have received teach you to be merciful to yourself, not by excusing sin, but by never despairing. The Layer of baptism did not save you so that you might continue in sin, but so that you might live in newness of life. Arm yourself therefore with the mind that despises death itself, how much more base desires, and press on until you stand complete. God, who has begun this work, will perfect it if you do not grow weary.

It is good to hear you have seen such improvement. Rejoice in that, for every step away from sin is a gift of grace. The Lord has been at work, and we give Him the glory.

You pray for these sins to be removed forever, and you long for a renewed mind. That longing itself shows your mind already serves the law of God, even while the flesh still fights. I think of what we learn from the apostle Paul. He discovered that the law is not sin, but it reveals what sin is. He said, “I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.” Before that, he might have thought only the outward act was sin. But the command exposed the desire itself, the inward pull. And then he found a fierce battle: another law in his members warring against the law of his mind, bringing him into captivity. “O wretched man that I am!” he cried. Yet right there, he did not sink into despair. He declared, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.” That is your solid ground.

Your tears and prayers are heard. The sin you hate, God hates too. But remember that sin’s penalty has been fully dealt with. Only the blood of Jesus Christ can put away sins, not merely cover them. When He died, He received pardon for every sin of every soul who trusts in Him. That includes every fall you have had, and every inward struggle still raging. God’s mercy and His truth met together at the cross. He takes your guilt and places it upon His Son, who paid the debt. So you can have peace with God right now, even while you still fight.

Yet you want more than forgiveness; you want deliverance. That is right. The promise stands: “Sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.” This does not mean you will never sin again in this life. It means sin no longer holds the title deed to your life. You are no longer its slave. The old nature, the root of sin, remains in your flesh, and if we say we have no such nature, we deceive ourselves. But you have a new Master. So what do you do now? You yield yourself to God. Before, you yielded your members to uncleanness; now yield them to righteousness. You reckon yourself dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The real battleground is the mind. The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace. You cannot simply will your mind clean by sheer effort. The carnal mind is enmity against God; it is not subject to His law, and indeed cannot be. So you need the Spirit to renew your mind day by day. Cry out for that. Ask Him to make you very wise by letting you see sin as exceeding sinful, as that which worked death in you, so that you stop trusting any reformation of your own. When your mind is set on the Spirit, He brings life and peace, and the power of sin’s pull is broken.

Keep bringing your heart honestly before the Lord. David, confronted with his guilt, finally said, “Against thee, thee only, have I sinned.” Only God can forgive sin, because it strikes against His holy law. And when He forgives, joy floods the soul. “Oh how happy is the man whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered!” That relief is yours. His mercy does not wink at sin; it justly punished it in Christ. So you can walk in the light, confessing every failing, and know the blood of Jesus cleanses from all unrighteousness.

Therefore, do not surrender to shame or fear. You have a great High Priest who has passed into the heavens, and He ever lives to intercede for you. He is touched with the feeling of our weaknesses. Keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking. His grace is sufficient, and His strength is made perfect in your weakness. What He has begun, He will complete. Let your prayer be that He work in you both to will and to do His good pleasure, and trust that He will give you understanding and that lasting, true deliverance will come as you walk in the Spirit, moment by moment.
