There is no power like that of intercession! It is God that writes intercession upon men’s hearts, and I rejoice that He has stirred you to plead for your dear parents. Pursue them with your persistent intercession, even until their souls have passed beyond the reach of change, for secret springs that move the puppets of earth are the prayers of God’s believing people.
Bring your mother and your father to the Great Physician. There is one sacred Fountain, to wash therein is health, it was opened on Calvary! There grows no healing herb but the one plant of renown, even Jesus Christ, the Tree of Life. The leaves of that tree are for the healing of the nations, and they will heal all diseases. Lay hold of Him who took our sicknesses and bore our pains. His cool hand of incarnate sympathy can grasp their fevered frame, and as their infirmities dissolve into Him, His health flows into them.
Yet remember, the healing of the body is often linked with the healing of the soul. When Jesus healed the palsied man, He first declared, “Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.” Pardon and healing are one in His gracious purpose. Oftentimes, when sin has weakened the body, the cure is much helped by repentance and faith. Pray, then, that the Sun of Righteousness would rise upon your parents with healing in His wings, that they might know not only restored health, but the forgiveness that brings eternal wholeness.
Be not discouraged if the relief seems slow. The Lord has begun to heal His people, and that healing virtue will work in them till they are without spot or wrinkle. We are on our way to eternal health! Why should we say, “I am sick,” when perfect health is promised at the resurrection? Yet for the present trial, seize every advantage in pleading: remind the Lord that His dear Son bore our sicknesses, that the Spirit maketh intercession for the saints with groanings which cannot be uttered. Lean upon that divine intercession.
Let your faith establish a contact with Christ on their behalf. As Peter’s mother-in-law was lifted up from the fever, so may they be raised up to serve Him. There is healing power conspicuously present wherever Christ is teaching, immerse them in the Word, surround them with the prayers of the saints, and trust that even now the healing leaves are dropping balm upon them. God grant that you see the Lord’s hand soon, and that together you may minister unto Him in health and gladness.
