Upon hearing of the ailments that afflict both you and the one with whom you walk in courtship, my heart goes out to you in true compassion. The body's frailty has a voice that will not be silenced, and it rightly drives us to seek the healing hand of the Lord. You have asked for prayer, and prayer shall indeed be offered in this congregation, for we know where alone true healing resides. There is but one great Physician, and His name is Jesus. There is one sacred Fountain opened on Calvary, to wash therein is health. The leaves of the Tree of Life are for the healing of the nations, and every leaf, every small promise and gentle touch from Christ, is laden with restorative virtue. His power to heal is as present today as when He walked the shores of Galilee, and we are bold to entreat Him on your behalf.
Yet let me remind you, as I remind my own soul, that the health of the body is not the highest aim. The Lord often begins His healing work in the innermost man, by speaking pardon to the sin-sick soul. When the palsied man was let down through the roof, our Savior first said, "Your sins are forgiven you," and only afterward, "Arise, take up your bed, and walk." Forgiveness and healing are sweetly intertwined. If any sin, whether of omission or commission, has brought weakness upon the frame, then true healing begins with repentance and faith in Christ’s atoning blood. Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and even your bodily condition will find its rightful place under His wise care. The abiding power of those healing leaves keeps the soul of the believer in perpetual health, and though our outward man decay, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.
I would also stir you to consider the blessed purpose that lies beyond the gift of health. It was when Peter’s mother-in-law was raised from her fever that she immediately arose and ministered unto Christ. The desire to serve arises out of healing. Should the Lord mercifully restore your strength and that of your intended, see to it that your renewed bodily vigor becomes an instrument of service to Him and to one another. A good design in your hearts, to live for Jesus in the bonds of holy matrimony, may plead mightily with the Lord for your recovery. But remember that all genuine healing is God’s own work. It is not the mere well-meant words of a minister, nor human will, that can mend a broken frame or a broken heart; it is God alone who heals. Therefore, wait upon Him with patient faith, listening earnestly to His Word, for faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.
We are on our way to eternal health, where no inhabitant shall ever say, "I am sick." Until that day, the Lord’s present help is sufficient. In your courtship, let this trial knit your hearts more closely to Christ and to each other. Pray together, read the healing promises together, and when the hand of Jesus touches your fevered brow, His health will flow into you. I charge you, do not let anxiety or fear gain mastery, for he who believes in Him shall never be confounded. Let your prayer be, "Lord, heal me and I shall be healed; save me and I shall be saved." He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.
Now, lift up your heads. The Sun of Righteousness has risen with healing in His wings. I pray that you both, being made whole, may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things, and that your union may be a living testimony to the restoring power of the Redeemer. God bless you. Amen.
