Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You desire to honor the elders, blessing them with health and renewal, and your prayer rises with many Scriptures. This is well, for the command to honor father and mother is the first with a promise, that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth. Yet see that your honoring is not only in words or in the feeling of the mind, but in deeds that stretch forth the hand. For many love in thought yet do not protect; but true love is made steadfast when honor is joined with forethought and ready help. Guard against any custom, however pious it might appear, that would rob your parents of what is due them under the pretense of a gift to God, as the Pharisees taught the young to say, “This is a gift, you cannot have it.” That dishonors both God and parents. Instead, when they do not hinder you in spiritual matters, show them all becoming respect, as Christ from the Cross entrusted His mother to the disciple, knitting them together in charity.
Your prayer for a renewed mind is a holy one. Renewal does not mean a change of our substance, but the selfsame thing that grew old being made new, the spirit of your mind being transformed by the Spirit. He who has the Spirit will perform no old deed, for the Spirit will not endure old deeds. Crave the sincere milk of the Word, but move also to solid food, being effectual doers, not merely hearers. Let the Word dwell in you richly, that you may bear the fruit of true discipleship, a life of humility, counting others better than yourselves. Seek not worldly honor, nor rejoice in position or praise; for the man who seeks honor is not honored, but he who in lowliness expects none finds joy whether he receives it or not. Let your joy be in dishonor for God’s sake, in poverty of spirit, in fasting, in humbleness of mind. Such a sacrifice of a contrite heart, offered through the Son, is well pleasing to God. May you taste the goodness of answered prayer by abiding in Him, and may your whole household be established in love, rooted and grounded, growing into the full stature of Christ.
