Healing

You beseech the Lord to heal her and keep her steady on her feet. This is a right and fitting prayer, for Christ alone bestows wholeness. Yet learn from the paralytic at the pool: after He made him well, He found him in the temple and said, "Sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee." Do you see? Bodily affliction often springs from the soul's sickness, and the merciful Physician strikes the inferior part that the superior might be cured. So while you ask for steady feet, entreat also for a steadier heart. Let her search her conscience, and if she has wronged anyone, let her reconcile; let her wash her tongue with tears and almsgiving, for the tongue is the hand that grasps God's knees in prayer, and if it be defiled, He will not hear. Despise not this good adjuration, when you plead for her in Christ's name, do not pass by like those who melt at a compliment but harden at the name of the Lord.

Consider too the body of the faithful. The eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of thee," nor the head to the feet. When one member is unsteady, all suffer. So persist in prayer, and do not grow weary if relief delays. Many hear the word ten times without visible fruit, yet the hidden root is being watered, and in due season the tree falls at a single stroke. God may be storing up a greater deliverance. Meanwhile, become her feet by your service; hold her up with mercy, and commend her to the Lord not only with words but with deeds. For Christ ate with publicans to heal them, and He sent the women with joy to proclaim His resurrection, honoring the dishonored. So He will meet her in her fear, cast it out, and say, "Be not afraid." Only do not seek carnal things alone, but spiritual; that she may rise not merely from her bed but from the death of sin, and stand firm, whole and rejoicing, in the congregation of the faithful.

It is right to bring this request to Jesus, laying this dear woman at His feet and asking Him to keep her steady. Scripture gives us solid ground to pray for physical healing, not just spiritual. When Jesus took bread and declared His body broken for us, the Holy Spirit intentionally tied our wholeness to His sacrifice. To limit that only to the forgiveness of sins is to narrow something God has purposefully broadened.

At the same time, we must hold this truth with a humble heart, knowing we do not command the outcome. We see the apostle Paul pleading three times for relief from a thorn in the flesh, a persistent physical affliction, and the Lord’s answer was not to remove it but to supply sufficient grace. We read of Timothy, a faithful companion, who battled frequent illnesses and received practical counsel rather than an instantaneous miracle. God does heal, genuinely and often, yet He does not heal in every case this side of eternity. Even in Jesus’ own ministry, one man’s sight returned in stages, a gradual process. Any healing, whether a sudden touch or the slow, marvelous restorative processes God built into the body, is equally divine.

What we can do without wavering is bring this need to the One who was moved by the tears of a weeping woman at His feet. Jesus did not use His power to spare Himself from hunger in the wilderness, but He gave it freely to others, to mend, to restore, to steady. Picture this woman now, spiritually, standing behind our Lord, and join in persistent, loving prayer for her. Smother His feet with your trust, not with a demand for a certain timetable, but with the confidence that He cares for her physical frame and her inner being alike.

Sometimes the healing that unfolds is a profound work in the mind and emotions, a calming of the spirit that transcends the body’s instability. God may strengthen her legs; He will certainly, if we ask, hold her heart steady. The foundation beneath any outcome is the anchoring of her life and yours on the vertical axis. Keep that relationship centered. When we put God at the very center, the balance of everything else, even in weakness, finds its proper place. Pray, trusting the One who fashioned the body and knows its every inner working, and rest in the truth that whether through immediate intervention or the quiet sustaining of her steps, His compassion for her is unfailing.
