You bring before the Lord a weighty matter, metastatic prostate cancer, a sickness that has spread its roots deep. We very speedily care for bodily diseases; they are too painful to let us slumber in silence, and they soon urge us to seek a physician. How much more then should we carry this to the Great Physician, that we may find in Him the complete remission and cure you crave?
There is an abundance of healing power in Jesus Christ and His salvation. Not only is His fruit sweet and nourishing, but the leaves, the very least things about Christ, are full of healing virtue. He used no other remedy in healing our sin-sickness but that of taking our sicknesses and infirmities upon Himself. This is the one great cure-all. Blessed be the Son of God that the medicine, bitter as it was, was not for us to drink, but was all drained by Himself! Look to that tree whose leaves heal the nations, and say, “I am sick at heart. I know that here is my cure, but may I dare to partake of it?” Yes, for the least thing about Christ is healing for every soul that trusts.
Yet mark this well: the malady is inward and needs change of self rather than change of place. Oftentimes when, by some sin, a body is weakened, the cure is much helped by repenting and forsaking it. When Jesus healed the sick of the palsy, He first declared, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.” Pardon and healing were one! Repentance and remission of sins are so joined together that wherever we find the one, we are sure to find the other. Therefore, if the repentance is yours, the remission also is yours. Ask to be forgiven, and healing will come from the pardoning hand.
He can breathe into your soul at this very moment a peace with God which passes all understanding, springing from perfect remission of your manifold iniquities. Do you believe that? The healing power was conspicuously present when Christ was teaching, and faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Hear then the leper’s cry: “If You will, You can make me clean.” And Jesus put forth His hand and touched him. Oh, that glorious contact! There is healing in the touch of His hand. He took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her. So He stands ready still.
But I warn you, do not mistake the intervals between fever fits for the calm of a cure. Many have sought relief in false physicians who deceive and send souls to hell at last. A real saving work, and a real healing, is the work of God, and God alone. Those who get no blessing are those who suppose they do not particularly need it. Come rather as that poor man let down through the roof, lying helpless in the presence of Jesus, hoping and expecting forgiveness and healing. When He pardons, the immediate cure follows: “Arise, take up your couch, and go into your house.”
Whether the Lord grants a full remission in this life or calls you to wait a little longer, this is sure: His salvation will perfectly heal our bodies. Even death itself, which kills the impenitent, helps the cure of a believer. The Sun of Righteousness has risen with healing in His wings. Lay hold now of that double promise, repentance and remission, and with it, the healing leaves that fall from His hand. He is healing the people who throng Him; bring your burden, your little ### and ### and ###, bring your own very self, for the Lord to look upon. May He grant you complete remission and cure according to His perfect will, and then shall you rise to minister to Him who is your life.
