Healing, strength, peace

Thank you for sharing your heart and your prayer for your son. We join with you in asking the Lord to touch him in every part of his being, body, mind and spirit, and to renew his strength and restore his peace in Jesus name.

Scripture shows us that God cares for the whole person. There is a close connection between the health of the body and the health of the soul. As the soul prospers, the body often prospers with it. The proverb says a joyful heart is like good medicine, and we now understand more clearly how true that is. Inner turmoil, fear and heaviness can weaken the body, while peace and trust toward God bring strength and healing. God made us as physical and spiritual beings, and He wants both to be nourished. We are careful to feed the body each day, but the inner person also needs to be fed from His Word and His presence.

The Bible also reveals that healing belongs to the work of Jesus Christ. The prophet declared that the punishment that brought us peace was placed upon Him and that by His wounds we are healed. Matthew, writing under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, shows that this promise includes physical healing, as Jesus healed all who were brought to Him. At the table of communion we remember His body broken for us. All healing is from the Lord, whether it comes instantly or gradually through the natural processes He Himself created. We do not always understand why some healings are immediate and others take time, but we trust the Healer and continue to ask Him to do His work in the body, to heal the wounds of the mind, and to bring life to the spirit.

Strength also comes from the Lord Himself. He is the strength of our lives, our shield and our help. When our own strength fails, His does not. The Scripture says to trust in the Lord forever, for in the Lord is everlasting strength. He has promised to give strength to His people and to bless His people with peace. You can ask Him to be your son's strength today, and to be yours as you wait and pray and care for him.

That peace is a gift only God can give. First we need peace with God, and that peace is made possible only through the blood of Jesus Christ shed for our sins. Once we have peace with God, we can know the peace of God, that deep, steady peace that goes beyond human understanding and guards the heart and mind. Jesus said, My peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you. The promise is that God will keep in perfect peace the one whose mind remains fixed on Him, because that person trusts in Him. As the mind is turned toward the Lord and rests in the confidence that He is in control, His peace begins to fill the heart, even in a world of turmoil.

God is extending that offer of peace and healing to those who are near and to those who are far off. To those who turn to Him He says, I will heal you. To those who continue to resist Him there is no lasting peace, only restlessness like a troubled sea. But when we come to Jesus, receive forgiveness and place our lives in His hands, the war within is over. We are no longer running from God or fighting against Him, and His peace takes its place.

We are praying that the Lord will heal your son physically, mentally and spiritually. May the Lord touch his body, calm his mind, renew his spirit, and fill him with a peace that remains. May He keep your own heart stayed on Him as you trust Him day by day. May He be your strength when you feel weak, and may He bless you both with His mercy, grace and perfect peace as you continue to look to Jesus.
