The cry of a parent’s heart is never lost in the courts of Heaven. That prayer for your son, for wholeness of body, mind, and spirit, rises as incense before the throne, and it pleases our Lord when we bring such burdens to Him, confessing that apart from Him we have no strength. You have done well to ask, for you have touched the very hem of His garment.
It is in the place of felt weakness that true strength is found. When we are overwhelmed with the consciousness of our own inability to mend a beloved child or lift the shadows from a weary mind, we are driven to the only source of power. Do you not know that He gives power to the faint and, to them that have no might, He increases strength? Whenever the leap seems too wide, draw back but a moment, breathe a prayer for more grace, and then in the name of Him who will surely bear you over, take that leap and you shall succeed. Your waiting upon the Lord, this very act of pleading, is the channel through which the promise flows: “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.”
And what is this peace you so rightly seek for him? It is not a mere quieting of circumstances, for in this dark world of sin, sorrows will surge around our feet. True peace is a present possession, a perfect peace kept for those whose minds are stayed upon Jehovah, because they trust in Him. It is the blood of Christ that whispers peace within, a peace which passes all understanding. It springs from the perfect remission of sin. There is a blessed link between pardon and healing; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we are healed. When Jesus comes to dwell with a soul, the Sun of Righteousness arises with healing in His wings, and pardon and healing are discovered to be one.
Look to the Tree of Life which is Christ Jesus, for the very leaves of it are for the healing of the nations. The least thing about Christ is full of healing virtue. His touch, His word, His breath upon the soul, these change the life-blood of the spirit, affect the inward parts, and make the nature other than it was before. Lay hold of this great truth by a personal faith. It is that touch which brings peace. A guilty, weak, and helpless worm, falling upon Christ’s kind arms, finds Him to be strength and righteousness and all.
So, let your heart be of good cheer. The healing power is conspicuously present even now as you are being taught by His Word. In His own time and way, the strength shall be restored and the peace shall flow like a river. Wait for it; expect it. The glory of your son’s strength, whether physical, mental, or that highest spiritual strength, belongs to God alone, and He will be the glory of that restored strength, that all may see it is His work. May your son soon know that deep, still peace which is our lodge on earth and our foretaste of Heaven.
