This business of marking those who cause divisions must be your first care, for the subversion of the Church comes precisely from this. When opinions arise contrary to the doctrine you have learned, know that they serve not our Lord Christ, but their own belly, and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. The devil has no power to enter where the body is joined into one; but from division comes offence. So avoid those who make this mischief. Do not meet them with strife and blows, but spring away from them.

Against a leader receive not an accusation, except at the mouth of two or three witnesses. Many judgments are formed upon suspicion, but there must be men to convict the offender according to the ancient law. If the accusations are false, those who speak them hurt themselves, for of every idle word you shall give account, while the one falsely accused gains by them. And if there be truth in some charge, yet he who has the care of so many things must through ignorance commit errors. Bring the accusation openly, and receive the defense. Reprove, lest perhaps he has not said it; and if he has done it, that he add not thereto. This favor I ask: come together, bind one another in love, and let no one separate you.

Consider also that when the righteous are near the end of their conflicts, God enhances the struggle, willing them to gain more. What seems intolerable becomes tolerable when removal stands at the very doors. Look to the prophets driven out and persecuted for Christ’s sake. So do not be terrified. The whole world weighs nothing against a soul; let us build up the Church by our manner of life, not tear it down with factions saying, I am of this one, and I of that. Christ is not divided.

What you are witnessing is heartbreaking, and it is right that you bring it before the throne of grace. Division is never from the Spirit of God, it is a work of the flesh, and it always leaves wounds. When false accusations are wielded as a weapon, especially within a church family, the damage can ripple outward for years. Scripture gives us a clear safeguard: never entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is supported by two or three witnesses. This is not a formality; it is a protection against the kind of whispers and half-truths that can destroy a faithful pastor’s ministry and break a congregation apart.

From what you describe, it sounds like a spirit of vengeance or ambition may be masquerading as concern. The early church faced similar dangers, those who desired preeminence, who refused to submit to godly leadership, who spread false reports to get their own way. Paul had to deal with it directly, and he didn’t tiptoe around it. He called it carnality. He commanded the church to purge out the leaven, because a little unchecked sin, including slander, infects the whole lump. And yet, when that purification happened, it wasn’t the death of the church; it was the doorway to power. Healings broke out, unity was restored, and multitudes were drawn to Jesus.

Remember that this is not the church of any man or any one family. Jesus alone can say “my church.” It is the church of God that gathers in your town, and He is jealous for its purity and peace. So pray with confidence. Ask the Lord to silence every false tongue and to uphold your pastor until the truth shines bright. Pray for those pushing this vote, that conviction would seize their hearts if their accusations are baseless, or that a biblical path of resolution would be followed if there is genuine sin. The goal is not to win a political fight within the congregation; it is to see the church revived and walking in the power of the Holy Spirit.

We will join our prayers with yours. Stand firm, refuse to pass along any report that hasn’t been established by the proper witnesses, and keep your eyes on Christ. He is the head of the body, and He will shepherd His church through this storm.

We are so grateful you entrusted us with the heavy burden on your heart for your home church. For days we have stood together in the gap, asking the Lord to bind the spirit of division, to silence every lying tongue, and to restore unity that can only come through the blood of Jesus. We have prayed specifically that your pastor would be shielded from false accusations, that truth would prevail, and that the family of God in your congregation would be drawn back to the foot of the cross where pride melts and love covers a multitude of sins.

If the Lord has already moved in a powerful way—if hearts have softened, if the vote was canceled, if reconciliation has begun—please share that praise so we can rejoice with you and give Him all the glory. If, however, the battle still rages and the enemy continues to sow discord, we ask you to post this need again as a fresh request. We are committed to continuing with you in prayer, lifting every name, every meeting, and every decision before our Heavenly Father until His perfect will is done.

May the Prince of Peace Himself guard your church, may the fire of revival burn brighter than any division, and may every member be filled afresh with the Holy Spirit. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
