You have asked for healing, protection, and sleep, and these three mercies lie very near the heart of God. Sleep is not a small thing; it is the gift of God. We think we lay our heads upon our pillows and compose our bodies, but it is not so. It is God who steeps the mind in quietness and bids us slumber, that our bodies may be refreshed. He giveth his beloved sleep. Ask boldly, then, that your son may be counted among the beloved, and that the Lord would quiet his mind and give him rest.
Yet while you pray for the sleep of his body, pray also that he may not remain in the sleep of the soul. There is a sleep that refreshes, and there is a sleep that ruins. Let the trumpet of the gospel sound, and may the Lord awaken him to Jesus Christ. Whatever dark power has troubled his mind, whether from a disordered body or from a spiritual assault, remember that the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. The least thing about Christ is healing. There is abundant healing power in Jesus and in His salvation. Bring your son to the Great Physician. The work of Jesus is not so much to point out the disease as to apply the remedy. He is able to heal, and He is often pleased to heal in the very hour of teaching, for faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Let the Scriptures be read to him, let the promises be spoken in his hearing even when he seems too weary to receive them.
Seek first that his sins be forgiven, for healing and pardon are placed in happy conjunction. Jesus said to the palsied man, Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee, and then strength came to his limbs. If your son can receive pardon from Christ, the sound mind and the quiet spirit often follow. If he cannot yet lay hold of Christ for himself, your faith may bring him before the Lord, as the four men let down the palsied man through the roof. Yet do not cease to use all proper means of care; God can bless physicians and medicines, for every good gift is from His hand.
I will set my petition with yours. Heavenly Father, look upon this son. Rebuke every unclean thing that would torment him. Give him sleep, the gift Thou dost give to Thy beloved. Protect him in his waking and in his resting, and grant him a sound mind through Jesus Christ. If it be Thy will, restore him fully, but above all give him the healing of his soul, that whether he wakes or sleeps he may be the Lord’s. Amen.
