Thank God for the friend He has sent to walk alongside you; such companions are a mercy. Yet the true physician of the soul is Christ alone, who probes the inward parts and heals every secret wound. You cry out for healing, and rightly so, but beware lest the sores you carry remain hidden and fester within, the most destructive conflagrations are those fed in secret, the fevers that burn up the vitals without ever breaking to the surface. So I bid you: let no bitterness take root. For bitterness produces wrath, wrath anger, anger clamor, clamor railing, and railing passes swiftly to blows and death. Put away all malice, not only the kind that shouts and roars, but also the kind that fawns silently while fixing its teeth. A barking dog gives warning; the one that bites without a sound is far more dangerous. Do not spare your words only to avenge yourself in deeds, that is to cherish live coals within and call it peace.
Instead, let love take its seat in your soul like an excellent husbandman, tearing up every thorn of anger and rashness before they spring up. When there is no anger within, insolence and spite are clean taken away. Love bears all things, endures all things, and places you as in a quiet harbor, far from the tempests of passion. It extinguishes the fire before it blazes; it soothes and heals the wounds of others even as it heals your own. If you would treat those around you with kindness and not pour out upon them the pain you carry, then clothe yourself in this love. Let your speech be gentle, not loud or harsh. Those who cry out like wild beasts repel, but a mild and soothing voice, like the flute or lyre, draws others near and mends what is broken. Speak openly, then, but quietly, without clamor, so your meaning may be understood and your relationships strengthened.
I go about daily dressing wounds such as yours with the balm of God’s word, and I urge you: rouse yourself to become a healer in turn. Your friend helps you, but fix your trust not on human aid alone. Bear your struggles as Paul bore his scars, not as a disgrace, but as trophies that prove your sincerity and God’s sustaining grace. Pray without ceasing, soften your heart in the furnace of divine love, and know that as you put away evil and walk in meekness, the Spirit Himself works in you both to will and to act.
