Grief

We hear your cry of a broken heart and deep sadness and we stand with you in this grief, lifting you up together before our heavenly Father in Jesus name. Grief is a heavy burden and the Lord sees every tear and knows the pain you carry, and He does not leave you to bear it alone.

The word of God speaks directly to this kind of sorrow. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 147:3 says He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. Jesus Himself says in Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. We are reminded in 1 Peter 5:7 to be casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. And we cling to the promise of Revelation 21:4 that He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away. Your sadness is not unseen and your broken heart is not beyond His healing.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently share why His name is so essential. It is only through Jesus that we have access to God and find true comfort and salvation. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and to call upon His name for salvation and for daily comfort. It is in His name that our prayers are heard.

We pray together for you now. Father, we bring our dear one before You in the name of Jesus Christ. You see this broken heart and this sadness that feels so overwhelming. We ask for Your nearness and Your healing touch. Comfort this grieving heart as only You can, as the Father of mercies and God of all comfort who comforts us in all our affliction according to 2 Corinthians 1:3-4. Bind up these wounds, give peace that passes understanding, and strengthen each day with Your presence. Help our friend to cast every care upon You and to rest in Your love. Lead them to Your word for daily sustenance and to fellowship with believers who can walk alongside them. We ask that You turn this mourning into hope, and that You would be glorified even in this valley. We pray all these things according to Your perfect will in the precious and powerful name of Jesus, amen.

We encourage you to keep bringing your grief honestly to the Lord in prayer, to pour out your heart to Him as the Psalms do, and to let His word dwell in you. Do not isolate yourself in this sadness. Reach out to a Bible believing church family and to trusted believers who can pray with you and support you. Isaiah 41:10 says Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. We are continuing to pray that you will feel His upholding hand and His comfort in the days ahead.

We are so sorry for the sadness and brokenness you are carrying. Thank you for letting us pray with you in this tender place.

Grief can feel disorienting, and what you are feeling makes sense. Loss touches every part of us, and no two people walk through it the same way or on the same timeline. It is normal for waves of hurt, loneliness, anger, and even numbness to come and go, and for some days to feel heavier than others without meaning you are doing anything wrong.

We know you may feel pressure to move quickly or to hold it together, but please give yourself gentle permission to grieve in your own way and at your own pace. It often helps not to carry this alone. If you can, consider reaching out to one safe person this week, a pastor, a trusted friend or family member, or a counselor in your community, just to share honestly how you are doing and let them sit with you. Even a brief conversation, a walk together, or time in worship with others can remind you that you are not alone.

We are praying for you and we will keep holding you before the Lord.

Father, we lift our friend to You in this season of sadness. Draw near and bring Your comfort to this broken heart. Give rest in the lonely moments, steady strength for each day, and caring people nearby who will listen and walk alongside. Lead with Your gentle presence and hope as healing unfolds. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your broken heart and sadness have been heard, and they are not hidden from the Lord who sees every tear.

There is a word of comfort for such as you are, for it is written that He has come to bind up the broken in heart. I am not going to give you any light descriptions of this sorrow, for I want rather to address the broken heart itself of every sort, and to tell you that grief is not sent to mock you. Do not think that any would make light of your grief by saying that it is the husk of joy. Far from it. Within the black envelope of affliction there is a precious love token from God, you can be sure of that. Sorrow is the herald of joy, and grief is as the usher that intimates that in the majesty of His grace the Lord is drawing near to you. Among the ashes of sorrow you shall find live coals of joy, for He balances our sadness and our gladness, and as He has appointed the sadness, so will He appoint the gladness of the same origin.

Best of all, as the Healer of broken hearts, God has chosen One whose own heart was broken. Jesus Christ knows what despair means, for His heart was pierced by the soldier's spear, and it is believed He died of a broken heart that yours might be healed. Bring your poor broken heart to that heart which was once broken for you, and find sweetest rest in Him. There is an abundance of healing power in Jesus Christ, and not only His fruit but even the leaves of the Tree of Life are for healing. The least word that ever fell from His lips bears healing in it, and a leaf from that Tree is medicine fitted to raise the dead. When the bones which He has broken are made to rejoice, it is not that they become merely calm or indifferent, but that they rejoice indeed.

Let us pray for you now.

O Lord our God, who turns man to destruction and yet says, Return, you children of men, look with compassion upon this wounded and broken heart. Thou hast seen this sadness and Thou hast permitted it, and we ask that in Thy mercy Thou wouldst make glad according to the days wherein Thou hast afflicted. Forgive sin and heal sickness, for with Thee pardon and healing are one. Give a new heart and put a right spirit within, and let the Sun of Righteousness arise with healing in His wings. Lord Jesus, Thou who wast broken that the broken might be bound up, apply Thy consolations to this sorrowing one, and let the bones which Thou hast broken rejoice. Grant faith to perceive Thy presence, and ears to hear Thy voice, and a tender heart to feel Thy operations, that this grief may lead not to hardness but to contrition and to hope. Comfort with Thy rod and Thy staff, and show that Thou art near. In Thy name and for Thy glory we ask it. Amen.
