Grandma

We have brought your prayer before the Lord and we grieve with you in this loss.

We thank God that your loved one was able to be there to say goodbye and to show his love to his grandmother in her final hours. That is right and good. We pray now for him as grief pours out, that the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, will pour His own comfort into him. As suffering abounds, so comfort also abounds through Christ. May the Lord remind him that for those who are in Christ, death is not an end without hope but a departure to be with Christ, which is far better, and may that hope steady his heart. We pray too for his mother and for her children, the grown daughter and two adult sons, that God will draw them together in this time and surround them with a renewed love for one another, with patience and kindness, and keep them from being overwhelmed by sorrow. Grief darkens the soul when it is without measure, but the Scriptures are like a chest of medicines. We encourage all of you to dive into them daily, to take the Gospels and the Psalms and the apostolic letters into your minds and hearts, and to let God speak comfort there.

We also heard your prayer for your own union. We pray that God will hold you both and keep you close to Himself, and that He will lead your relationship according to His good design. God has given marriage as a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and He calls those who belong to Him to keep the body pure and to honor Him in all things, whether near or at a distance. We do not ask God to bless what is outside His will, but we do ask Him to bless you with holiness, wisdom, and clarity, to strengthen you to live in a way that honors Him, and if it is His will for you to be married, to guide you clearly and purely toward that holy covenant in His timing. We pray that abundance in your life would mean abundance of faith, love, and obedience to Christ, through whom alone we have salvation and peace with God.

So we pray: Lord Jesus, You know this grief and this love. Comfort this man in his mourning, comfort his mother and her children, and guard their hearts with Your peace. Hold this dear one who has written to us, and her loved one, and teach them to seek You first, to trust Your promises of life in Christ, and to walk in Your ways. Give them hope that does not fade, and increase in them spiritual wisdom and strength. Amen.

Thank you for sharing your heart so openly in this prayer. The loss of a grandmother is deep, and it is a tender mercy that your loved one was able to be there to say goodbye and to show that love in person. God sees that moment and He sees the grief that now follows.

I am praying that Jesus will meet your loved one in this grief with His own compassion. Scripture shows us Jesus looking at a man in a broken and untouchable condition and being moved with compassion, reaching out to touch him and to bring healing. He is the same today. As sorrow pours out, ask Him to pour in His comfort and peace that steadies the heart. Even after a long and draining day of caring for others, He did not turn people away, and He will not turn away from this man now. May the Lord hold him close, quiet his heart, and let him know he is not alone in his mourning.

I am also praying for his mother and for her children, the grown daughter and the two adult sons, that God would surround them with a renewed love for one another in this season. Loss can create distance, but God is able to restore and to bring comfort through family. Just as a broken relationship between two servants of God was later healed so that one became a great comfort to the other, God can use this time to draw this family together and to be a comfort to each other.

In the face of death we cling to what Jesus taught about the resurrection. He affirmed that those who belong to Him will rise, and that death is not the end for those who are in Him. Our hope is not in saying goodbye well, but in the pardon God has provided through Jesus. The Scripture says the wages of sin is death, and that sentence rests on us all, but God laid our sin on Christ so that we can be forgiven and pass from death into life, from darkness into light. That gift comes only through personal faith in Jesus. Faith cannot be inherited, each person must have his own close relationship with Him. If your loved one's grandmother trusted Christ, she is with Him, and that is the true comfort. Pray that each member of this family would know that personal trust for themselves.

For you and the man you love, I hear your commitment to your union even while you are apart. I will pray that God keeps you both faithful and pure and that He guides you according to His design. In Scripture marriage is a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, and intimacy and living together belong within that covenant. True abundance does not come from following our own desires but from seeking His kingdom first rather than a self centered life. If you are not yet joined in that covenant, pray that God would lead you toward it in holiness if it is His will, and if you are already joined, pray that distance would not weaken what God has joined. A distant relationship with the Lord leaves us weak, so stay close to Him yourself, seeking Him daily in prayer and in His Word, and encourage your loved one to do the same.

May the Lord hold this man as you have asked, and may He kiss his heart not only with your prayers but with His own presence. May He fill the mother's heart and the hearts of her children with love, and may He keep you both in His grace, drawing you closer to Jesus and, in Him, closer to one another.
