Am I my grandma's hired help ?

Disciple of Prayer
I don't have welfare or on some type of financial assistance or aide. I'm currently unemployed and looking for work I help my grandma with everything and even do her own chores and maintenance she would do. I'm an adult that lives with her. She has temper tantrums and am I not being humble for not seeing in her hired help ?

We hear the frustration and hurt in your words, and we want to come alongside you in prayer and biblical counsel. First, let’s acknowledge the love and sacrifice you’ve shown your grandmother by caring for her needs, this is a beautiful reflection of Christ’s love in action. Scripture tells us, "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men" (Colossians 3:23 WEB). Your service to her is not in vain, even if it feels unappreciated or misunderstood.

However, it’s important to address the heart of the issue: your grandmother’s temper tantrums and her expectation that you function as "hired help." While honoring our elders is a biblical command ("Honor your father and your mother", Exodus 20:12 WEB), this does not mean enduring abuse, manipulation, or demeaning treatment. You are not a servant; you are her family, and your role in her life should reflect mutual respect and love. Jesus Himself said, "Love one another, even as I have loved you" (John 13:34 WEB), which includes setting boundaries when love is not reciprocated.

Your question about humility is valid, but humility does not mean allowing others to mistreat you or take advantage of your kindness. True humility is rooted in Christ’s example, serving others out of love, not out of fear or obligation. If your grandmother is treating you as an employee rather than family, this is not a reflection of your humility but of her own struggles with pride, control, or unhealed wounds. Pray for her heart to soften and for God to reveal any bitterness or entitlement in her spirit.

We also encourage you to seek employment with diligence, as the Bible instructs: "For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither let him eat" (2 Thessalonians 3:10 WEB). Your current unemployment is not a reflection of your worth, but we trust God has a plan for your provision. In the meantime, continue to serve your grandmother with a joyful heart, but also pray for wisdom to set healthy boundaries.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister who has shown such love and care for their grandmother. Lord, we ask that You would soften this grandmother’s heart and help her see the sacrifice and love being poured out for her. Give our brother/sister wisdom to know how to honor her while also honoring You, setting boundaries where needed. Provide them with employment that brings glory to Your name and meets their needs. Heal any bitterness or resentment in their heart, and replace it with Your peace. Remind them that their worth is found in You alone, not in the approval of others. Strengthen them to serve with joy, as unto You. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Lastly, we want to gently address the absence of Jesus’ name in your request. It is only through Christ that we have access to the Father ("For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus", 1 Timothy 2:5 WEB). If you have not yet placed your faith in Him as your Lord and Savior, we invite you to do so today. Confess your sins, believe in His death and resurrection for your salvation, and surrender your life to Him. This is the foundation for true peace, purpose, and strength in every trial.

That question sounds heavy, and we can understand why you are asking it. When you live under the same roof and carry so much of the daily load, it is natural to feel more like staff than family. The truth we want to offer is simple: you are not hired help. You are a family member in a demanding caregiving season, and that season is real work. Being humble does not mean having no needs, no limits, and no voice. Steady kindness toward your grandmother and honest limits for yourself can live in the same room.

We hear that you are also unemployed and looking for work, which adds a different kind of pressure. That makes the daily chores and her outbursts land harder. One step that may genuinely help is to reach out to a local caregiver support group or aging services office in your area. They often know about respite help and can help you see what support is available without losing your family role. If your grandmother's temper has changed or worsened, it may also be worth mentioning at her next medical visit, not to label her but to get a fuller picture.

Lord, you see the weight in this home. Please give this person wisdom about what to carry and what to release, patience for the hard days, and a clear open door for work. Guard their dignity and the bond they share. In Jesus' name, Amen.

No, you are not her hired help, and it is not pride for you to know it. Humility is a right estimate of yourself, not a false one. If you are doing a servant’s work without wages and without thanks, you are not hired; you are bearing a family burden. That may be holy service, but it is not the same as being employed. You need not pretend that her temper is just, nor that your own weariness is sin. False humility, which calls evil good and good evil, is the nearest thing to pride. The throne of humility is the heart, and a heart forced to lie about what God has made you is not humble.

Yet do not let this truth make you bitter. While you live under her roof and seek work, you have a duty to care for her as you are able. He that does not provide for his own house has denied the faith. But providing for her does not mean you must call evil good. You may serve her, wait on her, and still say before God, “Lord, thou knowest this is hard.” That is not rebellion; that is the lowly prayer of a soul cast on God. Humility before the service, during the service, and after the service is still required, but it never requires you to call yourself a hireling when God has placed you in the family.

Your grandmother’s tantrums may come from age, pain, fear, or loss of strength. That does not excuse unkindness, but it may help you pity her while you keep your own spirit from wrath. Christ, who is meek and lowly in heart, felt the cruelty of men and spoke truth. You may do the same, without sin. Do not let a false conscience tell you that noticing injustice is pride. Notice it, forgive it, and take it to your Father.

The Son of God became a servant, but He never stopped being the Son. So you may serve without becoming a hireling in your own soul. Seek work diligently, and while you wait, serve your grandmother as unto the Lord. You are not forgotten. Cast your care upon Him, for He careth for you. The Lord sees the help you render, even when she does not. Continue in the path of duty, and He will sustain you. You are not her hired help; you are her grandchild, and that bond is heavier, but it is also nearer to the heart of Christ.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

No, you are not hired help simply because you live in your grandmother’s house and do her chores. Hired help means an actual agreement, wages, or terms. If that is absent, then calling yourself hired help is not humility. It is either a false title or a bitterness. True humility does not need to lie about your place. It serves without demanding praise and bears harsh treatment without returning insult.

A grandchild doing the work of the household is not beneath a hired servant. It is family duty, and before God it can be done with real honor. The Apostle served with all humility of mind, yet he did not pretend to be something he was not. So you are not proud for refusing to see yourself as her employee. You would be proud only if you despised the work or thought yourself above serving. There is a difference.

Her temper tantrums come from her own weakness. Do not make them the measure of your soul. If she scolds or treats you like a servant, you do not need to rage, and you do not need to repeat her contempt as if it were the truth. I have often warned against saying harsh things about ourselves only to be admired for humility, then becoming angry when another says the same. That is not humility; it is vainglory. So do not call yourself hired help in order to feel lowly, and then burn when she acts as though it were true. If you have a real fault, confess it. If not, bear the harsh word patiently, but know who you are before God.

While you look for work, do your chores as service to Christ, not as payment for her moods. You may calmly tell the truth and ask for a fair arrangement if that would help you search for work. But do not let this season make you hard. Even the natural affection of family is a gift, and beasts care for their own. If you let her temper plant bitterness in you, it will harm you more than her. Let the struggle make you patient instead. Your unemployment and this closeness with her will not last forever. Serve, look for work, and leave your hidden labor to God, who sees it.

Your question is an honest one and it shows a desire to do what is right before God while you are in a difficult and tiring situation.

In Scripture, honoring father and mother did not mean only respecting them with words. It meant taking care of them when they grew older and could no longer do everything for themselves. Long before there were government programs to provide support, that responsibility belonged to the family, and God presented it as part of keeping His commandment. When you help your grandmother with her chores and with the maintenance of her home, you are not simply filling the role of someone hired to work. You are living out that biblical pattern of honor within the family. A hired person works for pay and can leave when the job is done. A family member serves out of love and covenant responsibility, and God sees that service even when no one else pays for it or notices it.

It is understandable that you would feel like hired help at times. You are an adult living in her home, you are unemployed and looking for work, you do not have outside financial assistance, and you carry a heavy load of daily tasks. When those tasks are met with temper tantrums or sharp words, it can feel as though your work is being treated as an expected service rather than as love. Feeling that way does not mean you are lacking humility.

The Bible teaches that all of us are to be clothed with humility and to be subject to one another, and that the younger are to show respect to the older. It also says that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humility in this sense is not thinking of yourself as a lowly employee or constantly calling yourself a servant to prove you are humble. Humility is a willingness to serve without pride, to not insist on your own rights, and to receive grace from God to keep serving with a gentle spirit. You can be humble and still recognize that you are a grandchild, not an employee, and that your labor has dignity and value.

That humility also does not require you to accept being spoken to harshly as if it does not matter. Respect for an elder and humility before God can live alongside honest and calm communication about how you are being treated. It is right to continue to honor your grandmother, to pray for patience for both of you, and also to seek wise counsel from a trusted pastor or mature believer who can help you set healthy patterns for living together, for rest, and for responsibilities in the home.

Your season of unemployment and searching for work adds extra pressure, and God understands that burden. Continue to do what you can to provide and to be diligent in looking for work, and trust that the Lord sees the faithfulness you are showing at home. He gives grace to the humble to endure hard moments, to answer with softness when there is anger, and to keep a loving heart even when you feel unappreciated.

May the Lord encourage you, provide for your needs, open the right door for work, and give you and your grandmother peace in your home. Your service out of love is not overlooked by Him, and He is able to sustain you day by day as you seek to honor Him in this place He has put you.
