🙏 God's Will & Our Basic, Human Needs, (Provision, Forgiveness, Relationships, Protection) Matt 6:9-13

🙏 Jesus said,"Pray in this way: ‘Our Father in Heaven, May Your Name be honored. Let Your Kingdom come. Let Your Will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, forever, Amen.’" Matt 6:9-13, in Jesus' Name.

What a beautiful foundation you’ve laid by turning to the Lord’s Prayer as a guide for understanding God’s will and our most basic human needs! Jesus Himself taught us to pray in this way, and in doing so, He revealed the heart of our dependence on the Father—honoring His name, seeking His Kingdom, submitting to His will, and trusting Him for our daily provision, forgiveness, relationships, and protection. These are not just words to recite but a framework for how we are to live in complete reliance on God.

Let’s break this down together, as Scripture illuminates each of these needs and how they align with God’s perfect will.

First, Jesus begins by directing our focus upward: *"Our Father in heaven, may your name be honored."* (Matthew 6:9) This is the starting point—worship. Before we bring our needs, we acknowledge who God is: holy, sovereign, and worthy of all glory. When we honor His name, we align our hearts with His purposes. It’s a reminder that our needs are met not because we deserve them, but because He is good and faithful. Do we approach Him first with reverence, or do we rush into our requests without acknowledging His lordship? Let us examine our hearts, for *"the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise."* (Psalm 51:17)

Next, Jesus teaches us to pray, *"Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."* (Matthew 6:10) This is a surrender—a recognition that God’s will is supreme, and our greatest need is for His rule to be established in our lives and in the world. Too often, we pray for our will to be done, but Jesus calls us to seek God’s will above all else. *"For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me."* (John 6:38) When we pray for God’s will, we are asking for His purposes to prevail, even when they differ from our own desires. This requires trust, especially when His will leads us through trials or delays. Remember, *"We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose."* (Romans 8:28)

Now, let’s look at our basic human needs as outlined in this prayer:

1. **Provision**: *"Give us today our daily bread."* (Matthew 6:11)
This is a prayer for dependence. God knows our physical needs—food, shelter, work—and He promises to provide. But notice how Jesus frames it: *daily* bread. This teaches us to trust God one day at a time, resisting the temptation to hoard or worry about tomorrow. *"Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘With what will we be clothed?’ ... For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well."* (Matthew 6:31-33) Are we seeking His Kingdom first, or are we consumed by anxiety over our needs? Let us repent of any lack of trust and rest in His promise to provide.

2. **Forgiveness**: *"Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors."* (Matthew 6:12)
Here, Jesus ties our reception of God’s forgiveness to our willingness to forgive others. This is a sobering truth! Our greatest spiritual need is forgiveness, and it is freely given through Christ’s sacrifice—*"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."* (1 John 1:9) But we cannot receive this grace while harboring bitterness or unforgiveness. *"For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."* (Matthew 6:14-15) Is there someone you need to forgive? Let us release any resentment, for unforgiveness is a chain that binds us far more than it does the one who wronged us.

3. **Relationships**: Implicit in this prayer is our need for community and godly relationships.
While not explicitly stated in these verses, the use of *"our"* and *"us"* reminds us that we are part of a body—God’s family. We are not meant to walk alone. *"Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up."* (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10) Are your relationships honoring God? Are you seeking fellowship with other believers who can encourage you in faith? If you are single, are you pursuing courtship with the goal of a godly marriage, or are you compromising with worldly relationships? If married, are you nurturing your spouse and family in love and truth? Let us pray for relationships that reflect Christ’s love and point others to Him.

4. **Protection**: *"Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."* (Matthew 6:13)
We live in a fallen world, and the enemy seeks to devour us (1 Peter 5:8). This petition is a cry for God’s protection—both from the temptations that arise from our own sinful nature and from the schemes of the devil. *"No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."* (1 Corinthians 10:13) Are you actively resisting temptation, or are you flirting with sin? Are you putting on the full armor of God to stand against the enemy? (Ephesians 6:10-18) Let us be vigilant and lean on God’s strength, for apart from Him, we can do nothing (John 15:5).

Finally, Jesus ends this prayer with a declaration of God’s eternal sovereignty: *"For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen."* (Matthew 6:13) This is our confidence—that the God who hears our prayers is the same God who holds all power and glory. He is not a distant deity but a Father who invites us to come boldly before His throne (Hebrews 4:16). When we pray in this way, we are not just reciting words; we are aligning our hearts with heaven’s priorities.

Now, let us pray together over these truths:

*Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of awe and gratitude, for You alone are worthy of all honor and glory. Your name is holy, and we ask that Your Kingdom would come and Your will would be done in our lives, just as it is in heaven. Lord, we surrender our plans, our desires, and our fears to You, trusting that Your will is perfect and Your ways are higher than ours.*

*Father, we ask for our daily bread—not just the physical provision we need, but the spiritual nourishment that comes from Your Word and Your presence. Teach us to trust You one day at a time, free from anxiety and filled with faith. You know our needs before we even ask, and we thank You for Your promise to provide.*

*Lord, we confess our sins before You and ask for Your forgiveness. Wash us clean by the blood of Jesus, and create in us a clean heart. Help us, too, to forgive those who have wronged us. Remove any bitterness or resentment from our hearts, and fill us with Your love and grace. May we extend the same mercy to others that You have so freely given to us.*

*Father, we lift up our relationships to You. For those who are single, guide them into godly courtships that honor You and lead to Christ-centered marriages. For those who are married, strengthen their bonds and help them to love their spouses as Christ loves the church. Protect our families from division and lead us into unity. Surround us with believers who will encourage us, challenge us, and point us to You.*

*Lord, we ask for Your protection over our lives. Deliver us from temptation and the schemes of the evil one. When we are weak, be our strength. When we are tempted, provide a way of escape. Help us to stand firm in Your truth, clothed in the armor of God, and victorious over sin.*

*We declare that Yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever! Thank You for hearing our prayers and for Your faithfulness to answer according to Your perfect will. We ask all these things in the mighty and precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.*

Friend, as you continue to seek God’s will in these areas, remember that prayer is not just about asking—it’s about aligning your heart with His. Spend time in His Word daily, for it is *"a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."* (Psalm 119:105) If you find yourself struggling in any of these areas—provision, forgiveness, relationships, or protection—bring it before the Lord with honesty and faith. He is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18) and longs to meet you in your need.

Lastly, we noticed that you included *"in Jesus’ Name"* at the end of your request, and we praise God for this! It is only through the name of Jesus that we have access to the Father (John 14:6), and it is by His name that we are saved. If you have not yet surrendered your life to Christ, we urge you to do so today. *"If you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."* (Romans 10:9) There is no greater need than to know Him as your Savior and Lord. If you have any questions about salvation or how to walk with Christ, we are here to help.

May the Lord bless you and keep you as you seek Him with all your heart. Stay rooted in His Word, and trust that He is working all things for your good and His glory.
