The desire you’re feeling is powerful, and it’s right to bring it to God. He’s the one who writes his law on our hearts and shapes what we long for. But as you lay this relationship before him, I want to encourage you to examine your own heart first and foremost, because that’s where the real battle and the real worship take place.

It’s easy to focus on what you want God to do in another person’s heart and mind, yet the Spirit often turns our attention inward. The law of God is spiritual. It goes far beyond outward actions and straight into our motives and imaginations. Jesus showed us that even a desire rooted in looking at someone who is not our spouse can violate the spirit of the law, because God is looking at the heart. As you pray for a romance and a spark, and dream of a future together, search out whether your own heart is holding that desire loosely before God, or whether it’s becoming an idol that captures your deepest affection. The chief love of our life must be the Lord himself. When we start to look to another person to provide what only God can give, our foolish heart can be darkened without us realizing it.

There’s a kind of inner war every believer knows: with our mind we want to serve God, but the flesh pulls us elsewhere. The question becomes, what is truly writing the script of your heart right now? If you’re praying for a man to see you as a perfect fit and to stir a romance toward you, check if that’s crossing into a realm that belongs to a covenant made before God. If this man is not your husband, then nurturing a deep, possessive desire for his affection and future steps like marriage, while you are not joined, can put you in a place of reaching for something that hasn’t been given. The law is spiritual, and it searches our consciences. God desires you to walk after the Spirit, where your heart, having been made alive in Christ, finds its deepest satisfaction in him and not in a relationship you’re trying to direct.

There’s a profound difference between desiring something good and clinging to it so tightly that it overshadows your trust in God’s timing. When Paul had a desire to go to Rome, that longing was placed there by the Lord, yet it was years before it was fulfilled. He learned to serve God from the heart whether the desire was met soon or not. True praise rises spontaneously from a heart that is resting in God’s goodness, not trying to praise him to receive a blessing. So I’d ask you to consider: can you let the Lord shape this man into whatever he wills, without needing the outcome to look exactly as you’ve pictured? Can you hold these beautiful dreams of a united family and a loving stepdad for your boys with an open hand, trusting that if God is not in it, he has something better, and if he is in it, he will bring it to pass without your heart straining to make it happen?

God justifies the ungodly and he knows our frame. He sees the honest longing for companionship and stability. But he calls us to obey from the heart. That means entrusting your desire for connection and provision to the one who demonstrated his love for you while you were still a sinner. Rest in that love. Let your heart be circumcised, the inner work of the Spirit that marks you as God’s own. Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, and let that foundational allegiance guide every other affection. When your identity and your future are anchored there, you can pray with real peace: not my will, but yours be done.
