Heavenly Father,

Thank you for your goodness and for hearing my prayers. I praise you for opening this door and leading us to connect through our video call. Thank you for guiding our steps and bringing ### into my life.

Lord, I commit this new relationship into your hands. I ask that your will and your ways be done above all else. Please touch ###’s heart and mind. Make me his PRIORITY. Stir a genuine romance and a deep spark within him toward me. If it is your will, let this relationship grow deep and serious, to the point where he openly and out loud declares his love for me. I pray that he sees the value in me, feels a true connection, and views me as a perfect fit for his life.

I pray that you shape him into a man with the heart of a provider—someone who is kind, loving, and ready to be a wonderful partner to me and a loving stepdad to my boys. I ask that you make a way for him to visit me soon.

Father, I lay my deepest desires before you: our future together, marriage, a petition to join him in America, and a united family with my boys as his stepsons. I trust these dreams to your perfect timing and your perfect plan. Guide our steps, protect our hearts, and let your peace lead us every day.

Think on this: the great axle of the universe is not your desires, nor the longings of any mortal heart, but the will of God. You have asked that His will be done, and yet the prayer rushes on to set before the Almighty a list of demands, make me his priority, stir a spark, cause him to declare love openly. Where is the submission that says, “Not as I will, but as Thou wilt”? It is a blessed thing to bring our requests to the throne of grace, but let them be offered with hands that do not clutch too tightly upon the outcome. The Lord is King, doing as He pleases, having mercy on whom He will have mercy; shall the clay dictate to the Potter? Salvation itself is of God’s will, and every providential arrangement flows from that same fountain. Would you truly have His will above all else? Then loose your grip on the precise shape of your answered prayer, and trust Him.

Your cry for a romance kindled and a man shaped into a provider and a father, these are not wicked desires in themselves. Yet observe the frame of your words: “make me,” “stir him,” “let him see my value.” There is a grasping there, a feverish anxiety that forgets the meekness of love. The love that endures, that sweetens the marriage bond, is not manufactured by our commands but is a gift of God. As I have often said, the heart is so naturally corrupt that love to God, and indeed any pure, lasting love to another, never gets there without God’s putting it there. If this man is to be your husband, the Lord must work in him both to will and to do, and He must do the same in you. You cannot compel it by pleading “priority.” Instead, plead for grace to wait, to be kept from idolatry of a relationship, and to find your completeness in Christ alone. If He sees fit to give you the desire of your heart, it will come without you stretching out an impatient hand to hasten it.

Consider the marriage relationship itself: it is not one of birth, but of covenant, cemented by mutual love. Without love, wedded life becomes a purgatory. But that love, if it is genuine, will be tested. Satan will remind you of imperfections, of coldness, of backsliding. Yet if God has joined you, He will sustain you. Do not measure His love or His will by the speed with which this man books a flight or speaks aloud his affections. The Lord has loved His people with an everlasting love; in that love there is sometimes a disguise, if He chastens by delay, it is love; if He smiles by granting swift fulfillment, it is love. He knows when to give and when to withhold. They that love God’s Law find great peace, for they cease from covetousness and learn to acquiesce in His will. It is of no use to quarrel with God, better by far to let your desires be swallowed up in the sweetness of His Word, which is better than fine gold.

I charge you, then, to examine your own heart. Are you more desperate for a husband than for the Bridegroom of your soul? Remember, you have been betrothed to Christ forever, in a covenant that no failing of yours can break. Let that love be enough. When you perceive His love more deeply, you will love Him more, and then you will find that the desires of your heart align with His. They that are truly His people carry a wealth of promises, not a hoard of demands. If this relationship is of the Lord, it will not need your frantic orchestrations. Trust Him, He will never deceive you. Lean upon Him, He will not fail you. And then, in the quietness of that faith, pray again, but this time let your single, all-consuming petition be: “Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.” Leave the stepsons, the visa, the declaration of love, leave them all at the feet of Him who loved you and gave Himself for you. That is the climax of love; that is the guarantee that He will withhold no good thing from them that walk uprightly.
