Chrysostom
Good and Faithful Servant
Do not be anxious that the truth is hidden from you. The lessons of God are all plain to comprehend and easy to learn, even for a laborer, a servant, a widow, or a very child. What wise men failed to grasp, God reveals to those who remain babes. He has hidden these things from the proud and self-reliant, and revealed them to the lowly, not because of any diligence on their part, but by His own gracious will. So fear and continue humble, and you will have the benefit of revelation.
While you seek understanding, do not neglect charity. True charity is shown toward sinners and the unworthy, not only to those who appear righteous. Do not enquire curiously and learn who is deserving, but stretch out your hand to those in need, even if you must spend all. This is done purely for God’s sake, and it opens the heart to His truth. Let your heart be acquainted with Scripture, sound doctrine, and kindness, for from these all excellencies have birth.
Remember that the full brightness of God’s plan often shines only after the cross is accepted. When the things that offend are removed and our own will is crucified, then the right opinion concerning Christ is engraven pure and immovable in the mind, and His power is clearly seen. Do not demand full clarity before its time; a revelation, like Paul’s, comes to those who bear weakness and persevere. Wait on the Lord in charity, humility, and patient endurance, and the Holy Spirit will touch your heart with the truth.
