TEXT: Psalm 127: 3-5
3. Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him.
4. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth.
5. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate. NIV
WHO IS GOD?
God is the creator and preserver of the universe who does not live in the house built by man, but oversees the entire universe
WHO ARE GOD’S POSSESSION?
Children are the gift of the Lord and they are for those who receive the favour of God. The word heritage or gift means property or possession. Children are God’s property that He entrusted to your care. He who sends the mouth will send its food. Children are blessing from God and never means to bondage.
WHY GOD DOES ENTRUSTED THEM INTO OUR HAND?
They are given to us not to be mould in our own image or conform to world image. Rather they are given to us, so we can introduce and lead them to their maker in whose image they were created Gen. 18: 19, “For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.â€
(NIV) and Paul in Eph. 6: 4 “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.†In order for them to be signs and wonders for their generation. Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me. We are signs and symbols in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion. Isa 8:18
WHAT ARE THE PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To Nourish and cherish – we are to nourish and cherish our children as a gift from God and draw out God imported characteristics in them Eph. 6: 4. They are to be directed a right to their marker, pressing toward God’s glory and to the service of their generation.
2. We are to nurture and prune our children: encouragement and discipline like pruning and nurturing require plenty of tender loving care if they are to be effective (Love and discipline) Heb. 12: 5-12, Prov. 13: 24, Prov 13:24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.
GOAL – To enhance their spiritual growth for them to bear fruit, never withhold correction from a child Prov. 23: 13-14. Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die. 14 Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death. NIV
Rod of correction is vital in ensuring right discipline in instructing our children because; every child is having the potential to be wicked. It takes the grace of God to get rid of evil bent in them. In view of this we must not be negligent in our responsibility to discipline our children to become responsible stewards of eternal mystery of God. Prov. 22: 15, 29: 22: 15, Prov. 22: 6, Deut. 6: 6-7
3. Our responsibility is to train our child in order of God purpose for his life, but this
has to do with knowing your children individually, it is the parents’ duty to bring into submission and create a thirst for learning and nourishing ,wisdom and counsel. Prov. 19: 13. A foolish son is his father’s ruin, and a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping. Prov 10:1 A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother.
Every child is unique with distinct character “according to His way†not train up a child as you see him.
Ps 139:13-16
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, 16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. NIV
For a meaningful training be observant and discover your child’s way, and adapt your training accordingly. Prov 22:6 Train a child in the way he should go,and when he is old he will not turn from it. NIV
4. Teaching and instructing in Godly character Prov. 18, Deut. 31: 12-13
5. Making your home a paradise on earth by providing the basic need of your children
Application and conclusion 1Cor. 4: 2
To every responsibility there is accountability, therefore for you to be get reward of your labour over your children lead them a right in according with God’s purpose for their life and it will be well with your
