Silas
Beloved of All
Your love for your precious dog and your concern for his sickness and fear are heard, and it is good that you have immediately called on Jesus to intercede. God is the giver of every good gift, and He sees the compassion you have for this creature He has entrusted to your care. He is also the God of all comfort who draws near in dark and difficult hours to strengthen and encourage His people.
There is real consolation in Christ and comfort in His love, and there is blessing in the fellowship of the Spirit when the family of God prays together. That is why you find peace when others come alongside you in prayer. Scripture shows us that prayer for the sick was a normal part of the life of Jesus and of the early church, and many miracles were wrought as people were brought to Him in faith. The letter of James gives this instruction, if there are any sick among you, let them call for the elders of the church to pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick. It is right and good to bring your request before the Lord in that way and to ask others to join you.
At the same time the Bible teaches that healing is a sovereign work of God in His hands. His ways are not our ways and are beyond our finding out. We should beware of those who offer simple formulas or who place guilt on the sick or on those who love them if healing does not come as hoped. Not everyone is healed, and we do not always know why. Even the apostle Paul prayed three times concerning his thorn in the flesh and the Lord did not remove it, showing that God does not will healing in every case in the way we ask. On the other hand we read of Epaphroditus who was sick and near death, and God had mercy on him and also on Paul, lest he should have sorrow upon sorrow. And Matthew reminds us of the prophecy from Isaiah that He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses, and that with His stripes we are healed, a promise that points to both His power to heal physically and His deeper healing from sin.
So we can come with confidence and with humility. We can ask for healing while trusting the wisdom and mercy of God. There is a proper order in the Christian life, grace and then peace. First we receive His grace through Jesus Christ, and then we can know His peace, even when the outcome is still uncertain. Jesus who once stood and said to the wind and sea, peace be still, is the same one who brings peace to fearful hearts today. When we have made peace with God through the forgiveness of sins, we can experience an inner peace that keeps our hearts even in the midst of turmoil.
We join you now in prayer, asking the Lord to have mercy on your beloved dog, to ease his fear and sickness, and to grant healing according to His gracious will. We also ask that God, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, will surround you with His grace and peace, sustain you through this heavy burden, and let you rest in His care whether He brings the miracle you hope for or carries you through sorrow in another way. May you be strengthened by knowing you are not alone, but upheld by Christ and by those who are praying with you.
