Let us pray indeed that we may not come into temptation, but if it comes, let us bear it nobly. Why do you tremble at the questions of men, yet show no anguish at the judgment of God? Enter into your own conscience. If you have done wrong, then your prayer should be for repentance, not for the concealment of your deeds. The wrath of God encloses us on every side, yet we fear a human tongue more than the fire of hell. If your conscience is clear, why dread what may be asked? The Lord grants a mouth and wisdom to those who stand for His sake. But if you seek to escape just scrutiny, you are only begging to avoid a light momentary affliction, while the eternal tribunal remains. Convert this fear into earnestness. Live such a life that no question can shake your soul, rendering to each his due. Do not rush headlong into needless dangers, why draw down questions that bring no gain? Yet when they arise unbidden, be not cowardly. Fear God rather than man, and let your heart be fixed upon His mercy, which is ready for those who do their part, not for those who prevaricate with His grace.
