How readily you have armed yourself with the holy Scriptures, and how earnestly you lift up your soul for the nations! This is a good travail, for the Apostle himself charges us that “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all that are in authority.” And indeed, if we are commanded to give thanks for the good that befalls our neighbor, much more ought we to entreat God on their behalf, that they may obtain the greatest good of all, the salvation that is in Christ Jesus. Your prayer is fragrant with this desire: you ask not for their harm, but that the evil one be restrained and their souls delivered. This is a mind free from wrath and jealousy, offering holy hands without doubting. Let no root of bitterness spring up in you; as you intercede for those in power, love them, bless them, and harbor no secret grudge, for “if thou makest intercession to God against him, what hope of salvation wilt thou then have?” Rather, imitate the High Priest who ever liveth to make intercession, who died for us even while we were enemies. He is able to save to the uttermost, and He condescends to receive the prayers of such as you as a sweet incense.

Yet consider also: God is not limited to the methods we prescribe. He who led the Magi by a star and once used the voice of a dumb beast to rebuke a prophet, may well use the very turmoil of the nations to accomplish His hidden purposes. Trials are often permitted for the consolation and salvation of many. When we are afflicted for the sake of the brethren, it works patience and becomes a testimony of a clear conscience. Therefore even as you cry out for the restraining of the evil one, do not lose heart if deliverance tarries, for our hope is steadfast. The acceptable time is now; the day of salvation is present. This is the great salvation, not a respite from wars alone, but the destruction of death, the overthrow of the devil, the kingdom of heaven. If we neglect so great a grace, how shall we escape? Press on, then, in prayer and thanksgiving, purifying your own soul from all envy and vainglory, lest while you lead others in intercession you yourself become a blind guide. Walk humbly, trusting not in the multitude of words but in the mercy of God. And as you confess the sins of your people, remember that the God of all comfort has delivered us and will deliver us again, that we may be partakers of His glory. Continue therefore to beseech Him who maketh the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and let your prayer be ever mingled with praise, for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth.

I see the weight of nations in your words, and I recognize the heart that carries such a burden before the throne of God. You are right to anchor everything in His absolute rule. The earth belongs to Him, and all its fullness, and no leader rises to power apart from what He has ordained. That truth alone gives us a place to stand when the world seems unmoored. We do not pray as those without hope, but as those who know that the Lord God omnipotent reigns, and that every appointed time and boundary of nations is set by His hand.

Yet knowing that God establishes the powers that be also means we must grasp something difficult. The Scriptures call us to be subject to those governing authorities, for there is no power except from God. You are not praying for anarchy or for the Church to usurp the sword that belongs to the civil magistrate. You are praying, as we are commanded, for all in authority. And sometimes God, in His wisdom, allows evil men to reign because a people demands what their own hearts desire. When a nation hates the good and loves the evil, it cannot stand for long. That is why your move to confess sin, both personal and national, is right and necessary. We must go on our faces before the Lord and weep for what we see becoming of the land.

Your plea for the restraint of evil is a cry after the heart of our Lord, who taught us to pray, deliver us from evil. The evil one is a murderer and a liar from the beginning, and his schemes are at work through the violence, the deceit, and the flattering lips that pile grievance upon grievance. That spirit of retaliation and bloodshed you mention is the very thing the Lord abhors. And here is a truth we must hold tightly: the civil ruler is called a minister of God to you for good, a revenger to execute wrath upon him who practices evil. When that order is inverted and leaders hate the good, the misery of man becomes great. But God is not mocked. Though it appears that the evil man gets away with his deeds, and though people misinterpret the longsuffering of God because He does not execute His sentence speedily, the judgment will fall suddenly upon them, like a fish taken in an evil net. His hand is stretched out upon all the nations, and who can turn it back?

So I join my heart with yours in this intercession. Pray for our leaders, for those in other nations, that they would govern justly and that God would back the evil one off of their strategists. But our only ground for asking this is not that the world might become comfortable, but that souls might be saved. There is no difference between the Jew and the Greek in this age; the same Lord is rich to all who call upon Him. And that is the core of it: God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. The day is coming when the door of the ark will be shut, when the acceptable time of salvation yields to the vengeance of God. Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus. But while it is still today, we pray that many rulers and citizens alike would call upon the name of the Lord and be delivered from the wrath to come.

Stand on this: the righteous Lord loves righteousness. His countenance beholds the upright. And though the godly man seems to cease and the faithful fail from among the children of men, He will arise for the sighing of the needy. In the meantime, put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh, for that is where the real battle is won or lost in our own hearts. As you have authority over the evil one through Christ, rejoice that your name is written in heaven, and let that joy fuel your continual prayers until the kingdoms of this world become the kingdoms of our Lord.

We are deeply grateful for the privilege of standing with you in prayer for the nations, their leaders, and the global Church. Your passionate intercession, grounded in Scripture and aligned with God’s heart, has stirred our own spirits to lift these burdens before the throne of grace. It is a sacred trust to join you in declaring God’s sovereignty over all the earth, pleading for His restraint of evil, and praying for wisdom, justice, and salvation to prevail among those in authority.

As we continue to seek the Lord together, we ask Him to move mightily in response to your cries. If He has already answered—whether through divine intervention, changed hearts, or unseen victories—we long to hear your praise report so we may rejoice with you. If the battle still rages, we stand ready to press in anew, believing that the One who rules over nations will not abandon His purposes. Let us persist in prayer, trusting that the same God who exposed evil plots in the days of Elisha and David is actively working today, even when we cannot yet see it.

May the Lord strengthen your faith as you walk in obedience, and may the Church rise as His helpmeet, reflecting Christ’s love and power in this broken world. We commit these nations, their leaders, and the advance of the Gospel into His hands, knowing that His plans cannot be thwarted.
