God help and fix are bad and wrong habits

Anonymous

Beloved of All
God help us with the problem that we are having and in our lives so that he can help us restore them back to normal. God help us to be focused and keep irrelevant things out of mind and keep our minds away from distractions and fix bad and wrong habits.

We hear your cry for help and understand the struggle with habits that weigh heavily on your heart and mind. Let us first acknowledge that our strength comes from the Lord, and it is only through Jesus Christ that we can find true transformation and restoration. As it is written in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me." Without the name of Jesus, we have no access to the Father, for He alone is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). If you have not yet surrendered your life to Him, we encourage you to do so, confessing your sins and believing in His death and resurrection for your salvation (Romans 10:9-10).

Now, let us address the habits that are not aligning with God’s will for your life. The Bible is clear that we are to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). Distractions and irrelevant things that consume our minds can lead us away from the path God has set before us. Proverbs 4:23 warns us, "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life." When we allow our minds to wander into ungodly habits or thoughts, we open the door to sin and its consequences. We must actively guard our hearts and minds, filling them with things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable (Philippians 4:8).

We rebuke the strongholds of bad habits in your life in the name of Jesus. These habits do not have dominion over you, for you are no longer a slave to sin but a servant of righteousness (Romans 6:18). The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came that you may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). We command every chain of distraction, every pattern of wrong thinking, and every sinful habit to be broken in the mighty name of Jesus. You are not powerless, you have the Holy Spirit dwelling within you, and He is greater than anything the world can throw at you (1 John 4:4).

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus, acknowledging our need for Your strength and guidance. Lord, we confess that we have allowed distractions and bad habits to take root in our lives, and we ask for Your forgiveness. We renounce every thought, every habit, and every pattern that does not align with Your will. We break every chain that binds us, and we declare that we are set free by the blood of Jesus.

Father, we ask that You restore us to the path You have called us to walk. Help us to focus our minds on You and the things that are pleasing in Your sight. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit so that we may walk in righteousness and holiness. Give us the discipline to turn away from distractions and the wisdom to recognize the enemy’s schemes. We surrender our thoughts, our actions, and our lives to You, trusting that You will lead us into all truth.

Lord, we pray for Your healing and restoration in every area of our lives. Where there has been brokenness, bring wholeness. Where there has been weakness, bring strength. Where there has been confusion, bring clarity. We thank You that You are faithful to complete the good work You have begun in us (Philippians 1:6). Help us to walk in the freedom that Christ has purchased for us, and may our lives bring glory to Your name.

In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to immerse yourself in God’s Word daily, for it is a lamp to your feet and a light to your path (Psalm 119:105). Surround yourself with fellow believers who can hold you accountable and pray with you. Remember, transformation is a process, and God is patient with you as you seek to grow in Him. Do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season, you will reap a harvest if you do not give up (Galatians 6:9). Keep pressing forward, fixing your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:2). You are not alone in this battle, God is with you, and He will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6).

We know the weight of that prayer because we've felt it too, the frustration of tripping over the same habits, the weariness of a mind that won't stay put where you want it. What stands out to us in your words is how much you long for things to be "restored back to normal." That longing itself is a good and God-given thing. It says the Spirit is already at work in you, stirring a hunger for change.

One thing we've seen help in seasons like this is shifting from trying harder to training steadily. Trying usually means gritting our teeth and hoping today is the day we finally overpower the pattern. Training means we accept that lasting change is a long, slow project, like building physical strength, and we start practicing small, deliberate choices each day, even if we wobble. A concrete next step might be to pick just one small habit you want to grow in (perhaps a five-minute pause with God before you reach for your phone in the morning, or stepping out for a brief walk when you feel your mind scattering) and give your attention to that for a week, not to earn anything but simply to practice. The goal isn't immediate perfection; it's learning to stay in the process with Jesus day by day.

Jesus, we come with our friend who is tired of the same old ruts. You see the desire for a mind that is focused and habits that honor You. Meet them in the ordinary moments of today. Guard them from the discouragement that says change will never come. Give them patience with themselves and the quiet courage to take the next small step toward You. We trust You to do what we cannot. Amen.

The cry of your heart betrays the warfare within. You speak of bad and wrong habits, a mind besieged by distractions, and a life longing for restoration to its normal state. But mark this: the normal state of fallen man is not neutral, it is enmity against God. The carnal mind cannot fix itself because it hates the very remedy. Your vain thoughts are not mere trifles wandering through the chambers of your soul; they are bad lodgers that will plunder you of heart and hope, leaving your mind a wreck and ruin. And the longer they lodge, the more they strengthen the confession that the evil tree brings forth evil fruit. You have felt this, when you are alone, the misery rises, and you see what you really are. Let that sight drive you not to despair, but to the end of yourself.

Yet there is a strange and wondrous art in overcoming. We first learn to overcome evil, and then we learn the way to overcome goodness itself. But in this battle with the Goodness that is Christ, the weapons are not our own straining resolve. There is nothing to be done but to look, to give an overcoming glance to the Lord Jesus Christ for all things. Worldlings do not understand the terms on which we are linked with Him; to them He is a figure of ancient history. But to us He is alive, our familiar Friend! When the grounds of your faith come before your mind anew, your heart will be broken into a thousand pieces with grief that you should have been false to such a Friend. And that very breaking is the doorway to restoration. Peter was down, but he was soon up again. The story should rather be called Peter’s restoration than Peter’s fall, and so too the record of your own backsliding shall yet sing of the greatness of your Redeemer’s saving power.

Now, mind your company. It is bad for you to be in evil company, whether that company be the rough fellows around the fire or the rough thoughts within. If you are obliged to go where bad language is used, or where vain imaginations swarm, do just as you do when you go out in a shower of rain: carry an umbrella and go through it as quickly as you can. Do not tarry by the fire of temptation, warming your hands at the world’s comfort. Too much of the old stone of self-trust remains in you; the brag has gone out of you, and that is well. But Christ’s strength is made perfect in this very weakness. When you long for His appearing, when you cry, “Why are His chariots so long in coming?”, even that longing glance overcomes His heart. He will restore.

Then, when you are restored, take up the advocate’s mantle. You have yet to speak on God’s behalf. Peter, after his restoration, became the tender warner of the presumptuous, the gentle jogger of the elbow to those nearing the pit. You too are bound, from morning to night, to speak for God, not with the pride of a finished saint, but with the broken tenderness of one who has wept bitterly. Let the members of Christ’s Church bear in mind that Satan himself is only a dishwasher in God’s kitchen, scouring the vessels for His use. The very tempter who meant to do you a bad turn has scoured you for deeper service. Go now, and fix your eye not on the bad habits, but on the living Christ. Banish the empty promise of future repentance, for the Gospel acts as a white background to set forth the blackness of man’s heart, and it also paints, in crimson letters, that all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven. Look to Him, and His glance will restore your joy, fix your focus, and make your mind anew.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

It is a good thing to desire the breaking of bad habits. But you must understand that habit has a wonderful power to beguile even those who are very much in earnest, yet it is also easy to be corrected. If you will set over yourself at home many to watch you, such as your servant, your wife, your friend, you will easily break off from the bad habits, being hard pressed and closely restrained by all. If you succeed in doing this for ten days only, you will after that no longer need any further time, but all will be secured to you, rooted anew in the firmness of the most excellent habit.

Do not think that a brief effort of prayer is sufficient by itself. Tell me, I beseech you, when after a time of prayer you partakest of the Communion, do you think that a short season is sufficient for the purifying of the sins of all that time? And again, when a week has passed, do you give yourself up to the former things? Tell me now, if when you have been well for forty days after a long illness, you should again give yourself up to the food which caused the sickness, have you not lost your former labor too? For if natural things are changed, much more those which depend on choice. You assign a small time for the health of the soul, and do you expect to propitiate God? Tell me, are you in sport? You must not be led by distractions, but you must be careful of the company you keep. For it is a far worse evil to be led by an evil influence than by no one at all. The former will be led into the pit of destruction.

Establish yourself in the habits of this noble self-restraint, and then, not even when remiss, will you be able to transgress any of the commandment, habit imitating the solidity of nature. Yes, as to sleep is easy, and to eat, and to drink, and to breathe, so also will the deeds of virtue be easy to you, and you shall reap that pure pleasure, resting in a harbor without a wave, and enjoying continual calm.

Great is the power of habit both in good things and in evil, and when this carries you on, there will be little trouble. Just as some are in the habit of making the sign of the cross continually, and when the mind is wandering, the hand is involuntarily drawn by custom, so bring yourself into such a habit of virtuous action. Let those who are good and will reprove the bad be your close companions, for their reproof is a proof of their goodness. Do not let your mind wander after irrelevant things, but commit yourself to this course with sober purpose, and you will find God’s help in restoring your life.

The struggle with wrong habits and distractions is real, and it often reveals a deeper battle. You want God to fix the surface, but he invites you into something far greater: a whole new kind of life. There is a life lived merely on the human plane, chasing satisfaction in things that never last. That life, no matter how much you try to manage it, remains empty and frustrating. But God has given us eternal life, and that life is in his Son. It is not just endless time; it is a quality of life filled with righteousness, peace, and joy. And it is yours when you are in Christ.

The old life, dominated by the flesh, keeps dragging us back into those bad habits. But Scripture tells us that our old self was crucified with Christ. That means the power of sin has been broken. When a wrong desire flares up, you do not have to obey it. You can reckon it dead by faith. That bitterness, that anger, that pull toward distraction, it all belongs to the old life. Thank God that old life is buried. You have been raised to walk in newness of life, governed by the Spirit. The Spirit gives you new desires and the strength to act on them. So the real question is: who sits on the throne of your heart right now? Your flesh still wars against the Spirit, but you get to choose every moment which one you will yield to. Will you let your mind be pulled by irrelevant things, or will you fix your eyes on Jesus?

When problems feel overwhelming, our natural instinct is to zero in on the problem. But David, facing life-threatening betrayal and sorrow in the Psalms, always put his circumstances into perspective by focusing on God. He would say, “I’m going to put my trust in God.” Your bad habits, your distractions, they can seem powerful, like a cancer sapping your strength. But what are they compared to the power of the Creator who spoke the universe into existence? When you focus on God, the problem shrinks. So, as you pray, don’t just rehearse the struggle. Declare who God is. His power is greater, and his life in you is real.

Do not settle for just getting your life back to some kind of old normal. That normal was shaped by the flesh. God wants you to experience the fullness of life in the Son, a life that overflows. Your days are brief, a passing shadow. Chasing after what the world offers will always leave you bored and empty. Instead, put God at the center. In his presence is fullness of joy. So, when those old habits call to you, bring them to the cross. Reckon the old man dead, and ask the Spirit to fill you. Then rest in the truth that your life is in God’s hands, and he is able to keep you and transform you from the inside out.
