Your prayer is a most needful one, for to find fulfilment in the Lord alone is the true secret of a satisfied soul. All other fountains are broken cisterns that hold no water. The creature can never fill the heart that was made for the Creator. I have long since been taught that contentment is not a power that may be exercised naturally, but a science to be acquired gradually. We need not be taught to murmur, but we must be taught to acquiesce in the will and good pleasure of the Lord our God. When you have learned with Paul, “I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound,” you will have struck the rock from which living waters flow, and will look no longer to the parched lips of men for your satisfaction.
Set your affection on the immutable Jehovah, for He is the Rock of Ages. Yon old granite peak hath gleamed in the sun, or worn the white veil of winter snow, yet itself hath stood unchanged. The frosts of winter have not destroyed it, nor have the heats of summer melted it. It is the same with God. Lo, He is my rock, and from His unchangeable fullness we draw all we need. The mighty God is such a rock; we stand on Him, and look down on the world, counting it to be a mean thing. If you seek fulfilment in the shifting affections of men, you will be perpetually disappointed. Remember how they bound our blessed Master, those cruel ropes upon His gentle hands, when no bonds were needed, for He would have gone willingly to the slaughter. If they bound the sinless Son of God, what can you expect from fallen flesh? Even Thomas, one of the twelve, would not believe unless he thrust his hand into the print of the nails. Oh, the loving patience of Jesus to condescend to such weakness! But learn from this never to make an idol of the best of men. They are but dust, and their breath is in their nostrils.
Go alone with your God, as the Psalmist did, and declare your ways to Him. He has heard you in the secret place, and now pray on, “Teach me Your statutes.” Your fulfilment lies in being taught by His Spirit, not in the applause or sympathy of the world. I have heard the speech of Jehovah in my own soul, and it has made me tremble, yet it has also brought a settled peace which no human voice can give. The Lord has comforted His people with a special love, a love that is set upon them with His whole heart and His whole soul. He does not bless with a half-drawn hand, but assuredly, with His whole heart. Let this be your treasure, and you will have little cause to pine after the half-hearted affections of the creature.
Look to Christ Jesus, for in His face shines all the glory of God. There is more revealed in that dear countenance than all the libraries of men can hold. To know Him is life eternal, and to be satisfied with His love is the only true fulfilment. Cease then from man, and anchor your soul in the unchanging One, for He is your rock, your portion, and your exceeding great reward.
