Friend's job/court case/heat and bug problem

When we face a run of troubles like this, it can feel like everything is piling on at once. A friend under constant criticism at work no matter how hard she tries, a court case hanging over your husband’s head, the weight of second-guessing your own attempt to help, and on top of it all the draining pressure of heat and pests at home. It’s the kind of season that makes a person cry out, “Lord, what is going on?”

I think of a man who lost nearly everything, his wealth, his health, his children, and had no explanation for any of it. He sat in the ashes, scraping his sores, and his friends showed up. They had the best intentions, but they started piling guilt on him. Their thinking was simple: innocent people don’t suffer like this, so you must have brought it on yourself. They were judging from partial knowledge. They hadn’t heard the conversation in heaven, where God himself had been bragging about the man’s integrity. Their accusations only added to his pain.

The heart of that story is something you need to hear clearly: hard circumstances are not always a bill for secret sin. That friend of yours is doing her best, and a boss’s sharp criticism doesn’t mean she’s failed. You tried to help your husband by calling the court, and even if it complicated things, your motive was love, not malice. It’s so easy to let guilt take root when we’re already worn down. Resist that. Don’t let these troubles whisper that you’ve been cut off because you’re not good enough.

The man in that story said something raw and honest: if only there were someone to stand between him and God, to lay a hand on both and bring the two together. He was crying out for a mediator, someone who could plead his case when he couldn’t make sense of it himself. You already know who that Mediator is. Jesus himself stands in that very place, not to heap on fresh accusations, but to bring you near with confidence. He isn’t waiting for you to get everything sorted out before you can pray. You can bring the job, the court case, the heat, the bugs, and that nagging fear that you made things worse, right to him, just as you are.

Your prayer is heard. Keep bringing these things before the Lord. Ask him to shield your friend’s livelihood and give her wisdom and steadiness under criticism. Ask him to handle the legal situation with justice and mercy. Release that guilt about the phone call; you were not acting in rebellion, you were trying to do right, and you can trust him to work through even our clumsy efforts. The same God who set limits on what that suffering man could lose is not indifferent to the heat wave or the bug problem either. These are not too small for his care.

Hold your integrity. You’re doing your best, and you’re asking for help. That is not hypocrisy; it is faith. The true answer to the cry for a daysman has already come in Christ. He knows the full story, even the parts you can’t see right now, and he will carry you through.
