The Lord has laid upon your heart a tender care for this sick friend, and He has seen both your willingness and your want. It is no small grace to desire to help and to be grieved when the means are not in your hand.
There is a Friend that sticketh closer than a brother, and He loves at all times. He loved before there was any time, and He loves still when our pockets are empty and our hearts are heavy. You have found Him, I trust, to be your own Friend, and your father's Friend, whom you will not forsake, and who will never forsake you. He is the poor man's Friend, the King who from the river to the ends of the earth undertakes the cause of the helpless. When the poor committeth himself unto Him, He is the helper of the fatherless and the needy. Estimate your true wealth before God not by what you have stored up, but by your entire dependence upon Him.
You ask what you shall say to this afflicted one. Speak the truth in love, plainly and gently. Let them know that you count it a joy to visit them, that you have prayed for them, and that though you have no money to bring what they have asked, you have a willing heart to come and to sit by their bed and to do what love can do without cost. He it is that maketh the pillow and softeneth the bed of affliction, and often the presence of a faithful friend, a word of Scripture, a prayer offered at the bedside, is more healing than any gift of the hand. Do not be ashamed to say, we have nothing to give as we would wish, but such as we have we give. The Lord who fed multitudes with a few loaves knows how to multiply our little.
Be encouraged that your desire to do good is itself seen of God, and He who sees the sick one in his weakness will provide according to His wisdom. Go and be a friend indeed, for a friend loves at all times, and in adversity a brother is born.
Let us pray together. O Thou great King who art the poor man's Friend, Thou knowest this sick one and this family that would minister in Thy name. Look upon the affliction and lay Thy healing hand upon the sufferer if it be Thy will, and make the sick bed soft by Thy presence. Look upon Thy servants who have love without money, and supply their need as Thou seest fit, and give them grace to speak honestly and lovingly, and to trust Thee for all provision.
