Thank you for sharing your heart and your desire to care for your friend. God sees that desire and He knows your situation, including the lack of money to bring what has been asked for. Your willingness to help and to visit is itself a reflection of His love at work in you.
It is understandable to feel at a loss for what to say when you cannot provide something that has been requested. The most loving thing you can do is to speak honestly and kindly. A faithful friend tells the truth even when it is difficult, because that honesty is meant to heal and not to harm. It is far better to explain simply that you do not have the funds right now than to make a promise you cannot keep or to stay away out of embarrassment. Your presence, your conversation, and your prayer can be a real comfort. There is a sweetness in sitting with a friend, sharing and listening, that is like perfume to the heart, and friends sharpen one another as they talk and pray together.
We live in a world where sickness is common and no one is exempt. Being sick does not mean a person lacks faith, and being unable to help financially does not mean you lack love. The righteous also become ill, and Scripture does not teach that faith guarantees immediate healing. What it does teach is to bring the sick before the Lord in prayer. If there is sickness among you, let the sick person call for the elders of the church to pray over them, anointing with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will be heard by God according to His will. You can offer to pray with your friend in person and you can also help them connect with mature believers who will pray for them.
Remember the account of the paralyzed man whose four friends carried him to Jesus. The crowd was so large they could not get through the door, so they went up on the roof, opened it, and lowered their friend down to where Jesus was. Jesus saw their faith and first said to the man that his sins were forgiven. The friends had come for healing, but Jesus addressed the deepest need first, the forgiveness of sins which comes only through His blood. That remains the one provision God has made for our sin, and it is the greatest need for every person. After that, Jesus also showed His power to heal. This reminds us that while we should pray earnestly for healing, we should also pray most of all that our friends know the forgiveness and peace that come through Jesus.
God also understands financial hardship. Scripture tells of believers who were themselves poor and going through trials, yet they gave out of joy as they were able, and they were not pressed beyond what they could do. The Lord does not ask you to give what you do not have. He looks at the heart that wants to give. Do not carry guilt for what you cannot provide. Give what you can, which in this case may be your time, your care, your honest words, and your prayers.
You can tell your friend gently that you do not have the money for what they asked, but that you love them, you want to visit, and you want to pray with them and for them. Ask how else you can support them with what you do have, perhaps by helping in practical ways that cost nothing, by listening, or by reading Scripture together.
