It is a dreadful thing to have faith broken, hope broken, and love broken, and the entire man reduced to a palpitating mass of pain. Yet hear this: the cure of the whole, where all the bones are broken, must be a miracle! If a mass of misery shall yet become healthy and strong, great credit must be given to the surgeon's skill. The Lord Jesus Christ is that surgeon. There is a deliverance from the archers of darkness, for He has redeemed us from the curse of the Law, being made a curse for us. I do not understand language at all unless this means substitution. Christ was made a curse for us, that is to say, in our place He bore our sins and the curse which came of it. If you are in Christ Jesus, the Law has not a word to say against you, and neither has any witchcraft, for there is no enchantment against Jacob, nor divination against Israel.
You cry out for freedom from these dark bonds, and rightly so. Bondage under sin, bondage under the flesh, bondage under the fear of man, this is carnal bondage, the work of the devil. Yet the Spirit of God brings a necessary sense of bondage first, convicting of sin, that we might flee to the only Ransom. The Lord brought Israel forth from Egypt, but they had cried unto Him by reason of their sore bondage, and they did not receive the blessing without desiring it, yes, and sighing for it. Your sighing has ascended. Now lay hold of this: the clock of mercy struck in Heaven the hour and moment of deliverance, for the time had come. God has found a ransom. If a slave were in the bitterest of bondage, yet if his master said to him, "I have the ransom for you," that man must feel certain of his liberty. If He who held you in bondage has found a ransom, He certainly will hold you in bondage no longer. Salvation is of the Lord.
But take care that you do not rest in a broken column. Many begin with a "Lord, I will follow thee," yet a heavy blow from the withering hand of sin snaps their resolution short with a "but." So let not your determination stand as a broken thing. The wall of your soul must be kept whole. When a man's heart has its wall broken, all his thoughts go astray and wander upon the mountains of vanity. The faith once delivered to the saints is all the more attractive because it is called narrow, for I am weary of that breadth which comes of broken hedges. If the stone wall is broken down, cry to the Builder at once. Break any league with darkness, and heal every breach by repentance and faith. Obedience is freedom to the Lord's servant. Christ's yoke is easy, and His burden is light. Walk erect in conscious, mental, moral, spiritual, God-given freedom. Slaves of witchcraft we pity you no more, for those chains we would not wear for all the wealth of India, and you shall not, being Christ's.
The manner of your deliverance is this: let the bones which God has broken rejoice, not merely grow quiet, not merely become callous and painless, but rejoice. Then go out of the gates to attack the foe who once held you in bondage. When will the church of God be inflamed by the sacred desire of carrying the war for Christ into the enemy's territory? Let your liberty be a song of deliverance, a stanza of praise to Him who has brought you forth, and your peace shall silence the accuser. If you are lost, you are the very one Christ came to save. If your heart is broken, God will make it new. Now, if your deliverance seems delayed, remember it is the lot of God's greatest servants to bear the worst character amongst worldlings, and if you never had any trouble, then God would have broken His promise, for in this world you shall have tribulation. That proves God is true. So trust Him, and go forward in the power of His might.
